Mandatory Continuing Education: Does It Really Protect Society From Incompetent Health Professionals, Patricia A. Mcpartland
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Although the focus is narrow, this article argues that, in the face of short half-lives of current knowledge, continuing education requirements are needed and suggests possible improvements in the way that continuing education is implemented. While the issue is not explicitly addressed, readers might ponder whether such requirements might be profitably extended to other disciplines.

The Effects Of Aerobic Conditioning Upon The Resting Metabolic Rate, Marti R. Davis
The Effects Of Aerobic Conditioning Upon The Resting Metabolic Rate, Marti R. Davis
Masters Theses
This study com pared the metabolic rate following an exercise bout to the resting metabolic rate (RM R) established in pretesting procedures for twelve college age females. The only factor differentiating the groups was length o f the training period (one week, two weeks, four weeks, and five weeks). Training took place on a Bosch cycle ergometer three times a week, for 30 minutes each session, at 70 to 85 percent o f the subjects' heart rate reserve (HRR). Breath analysis was measured on a Beckman Metabolic Cart in both pretesting and post-testing procedures.
The findings indicated that aerobic exercise, …

A Comparison Of Smoking Cessation Methods In Normal Smokers And Smokers With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Mary Beth Mueller
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
This research was designed to investigate whether there would be a difference in mean exhaled carbon monoxide levels and mean number of cigarettes smoked for two randomized groups of smokers.Smoking cessation therapy was manipulated in smokers with a chronic, productive cough (COPD) and those who were asymptomatic (normal). Individual therapy was compared to self-help therapy. The main purpose of this study was an attempt to define the smoking cessation therapy that worked best for each of these two groups. With the information gained from this research, it was hoped that educating different types of smokers (those with and without lung disease) about …

Communication Barriers Between Teenagers & Parents About Sex & Sex-Related Topics: A Survey Of Teenagers In Sex Education Class, Karen Bonnell
Communication Barriers Between Teenagers & Parents About Sex & Sex-Related Topics: A Survey Of Teenagers In Sex Education Class, Karen Bonnell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Public concern about teenage pregnancy and the threat of sexually transmitted diseases like AIDS make sex education information vital for today's teenagers. A 1986 Harris survey of 1,000 teenagers cited parents as their primary source of sex education information, but 42% said they would be too nervous or afraid to bring up the subject of contraception or birth control with their parents. States like Kentucky have mandated sex education courses for all public schools to provide necessary instruction for teenagers.
This study identifies communication barriers which teenagers say prevent communication with their parents about sex and sex-related topics. Questionnaires were …

Teacher And Student Discourse Variables In Academic Communication, Janet M. Sturm
Teacher And Student Discourse Variables In Academic Communication, Janet M. Sturm
Masters Theses
This study was designed to analyze the oral communication exchanges between first, third, and fifth grade teachers and their students. It was based on the hypothesis that discourse parameters of linguistic quantity and complexity and communication acts change over grade level, much as the discourse parameters of caregivers with young children have been found to do. The language of teachers and students in 15 classrooms was examined by measuring 6 form and quantity variables and 11 communication act variables. Results showed significant differences for some form variables (MLU, mazes, and Type-token ratio) and some communication acts (convey content, mark content, …

The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management
This study identifies the occupational interests and predominant vocational personality types of freshmen students (undeclared majors, nursing majors, and non-nursing majors), explores perceptions about selected professional nursing functions and characteristics among the students, and examines perceptual differences between groups (majors).
A non-experimental ex post facto design is used to analyze data from 312 students in a large urban university. Descriptive and inferential statistics are applied in data analysis. The following findings support the hypotheses: (1) Nursing continues to attract the traditional student who has Holland's Social vocational personality type as measured by the Self-Directed Search, although many Social types are …
