Purpose: Becoming and being a nurse is vaguely conceptualized, so it is important for nurses to understand the defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, model cases, and empirical referents of professional identity with the aim of better understanding the process of its formation.
Method: Walker and Avant’s (2005) method is used to guide this concept analysis of professional identity.
Findings: The analysis indicated that formation of professional identity in nursing consists of three main themes: individual characteristics, becoming a nurse, and professional identity. This article explores our understanding of the concept in relation to the current literature, and a research study conducted …

The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruption to nurse educators’ work, both within higher educational institutions and in clinical practice learning environments. In this study, we explored the experiences of nurse educators in academic and clinical settings during COVID-19 and the impact the pandemic has had on their work. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 15 nurse educators from six different countries and used thematic analysis to gain a comprehensive understanding of nurse educators experiences during the pandemic. The participants’ experiences were classified into stages that reflected the intensity of the pandemic and resulted in four themes: (a) the calm before the …

Currently, we are faced with an important equity gap and opportunity for nursing in higher education related to Indigenous Peoples and health. While Westernized higher education often marginalizes Indigenous Peoples, there is an important opportunity to respectfully engage with Indigenous Knowledges. Furthermore, broadening perspectives beyond a dominant Westernized worldview has the potential to advance higher education for Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners alike. We are concerned that ongoing assimilation of Indigenous learners poses a profound risk of social injustice that is contrary to the aim of higher education. In our effort to reconcile nursing education in this context, we offer this …

At his death in 1945, Sir James William Barrett, a medical doctor in the state of Victoria left a bequest to the University of Melbourne, his alma mater. Barrett’s entire professional life was conducted at the University. According to his will, Barrett had been so influenced by his experiences of American universities which offered education in nursing that he directed a sum of money to the University of Melbourne for the foundation and/or development of a School of Nursing.
The background to Barrett’s bequest is a complex episode in Australian nursing education history that has received little attention. In the …

Baccalaureate nursing students must develop strong clinical reasoning skills to make sound clinical judgments regarding patient care. The purpose of this Interpretive Descriptive qualitative study was to explore how students understand the evolution and application of their own clinical reasoning skills. In this paper, we report on the findings of a research study that sought to answer the following questions: (i) How do current nursing students’ perceptions compare with those of actual working nurses regarding the mathematics and technology demands involved in nursing?; and, (ii) What types of course structures, content, pedagogy, or other recommendations could more effectively prepare nurses for the realities of the workplace in light of mathematics and technology demands? The study involved online open-response questions and semi-structured interviews. Seventy-six participants, including both 4th-year nursing students (n = 8) and working nurses (n = 68), completed …
