Effects Of Stem Cell Therapy On 6-Minute Walk Test Distance And Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction In Patients With Nonischemic Cardiomyopathy, Kayleigh Hunt, Alexa Maziuk Dec 2019

Effects Of Stem Cell Therapy On 6-Minute Walk Test Distance And Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction In Patients With Nonischemic Cardiomyopathy, Kayleigh Hunt, Alexa Maziuk

Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019

Objective

To assess the efficacy of stem cells in the improvement of functional capacity and quality of life in the setting of nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy.

Design

Systematic literature review

Methods

A literature search of PubMed was conducted utilizing the following search terms: “stem,” “cell,” “nonischemic,” and “cardiomyopathy.” The following limits were used: “2015-2018,” nonischemic cardiomyopathy, results of LVEF and 6MWT, randomized controlled trials, pilot studies, and sample size >22.

Results

Butler et al. found that within the itMSC group, 6MWD increased by an average of 27.40 m (95% CI 0.28–54.52; P=0.05), but it decreased by an average of 10.83 m …

Subanesthetic Iv Ketamine Reduces Acute Suicidal Ideation In Patients With Mood Disorders, Kimberly Jenko, Jack Anzilotti Dec 2019

Subanesthetic Iv Ketamine Reduces Acute Suicidal Ideation In Patients With Mood Disorders, Kimberly Jenko, Jack Anzilotti

Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019

Background. Depression and suicide are common in the United States and present a significant problem in the healthcare landscape. Currently, there are few options that can rapidly reduce suicidal ideation in patients with depression. Ketamine, a glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, has been shown to reduce acute suicidality in patients with depression. Previous studies have a reduction of suicidal ideation compared to saline placebo, but few studies have shown a significant effect compared to a similar psychoactive drug such as midazolam.

Method. A search of PubMed and PsychNET was performed in September 2018 using the terms “ketamine,” “suicide,” …

Effect Of Postpartum Protocols On Maternal Outcomes, Kelsey Grimm, Emily Harnish Dec 2019

Effect Of Postpartum Protocols On Maternal Outcomes, Kelsey Grimm, Emily Harnish

Physician Assistant Capstones, 2016 to 2019

Objective: To determine whether postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) protocols lead to decreases in maternal morbidity and mortality.

Design: Systemic literature review.

Methods: The clinical question investigated is whether the implementation of PPH protocols has measurable impact on maternal morbidity and mortality. Searches were done through PubMed using the keywords: “maternal hemorrhage postpartum protocol.” Studies were eliminated if they were more than 10 years old, conducted outside the United States, published in a non-English language, used other animal subjects besides humans, used non-female subjects, if they did not answer the clinical question, or were review articles. Eventually, three cohort …

El Vph Y El Cáncer Cervical En El Perú: Diferencias De Accesibilidad Entre Las Mujeres De Las Zonas Rurales Y Urbanas / Hpv And Cervical Cancer In Peru: The Differences In Accessibility For Rural And Urban Women, Jemma Stratton Nov 2019

El Vph Y El Cáncer Cervical En El Perú: Diferencias De Accesibilidad Entre Las Mujeres De Las Zonas Rurales Y Urbanas / Hpv And Cervical Cancer In Peru: The Differences In Accessibility For Rural And Urban Women, Jemma Stratton

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Investigating The Role Of Integrin Beta 3 In Dendritic Arborization In The Supragranular Developing Cerebral Cortex, Zachary Logan Holley May 2019

Investigating The Role Of Integrin Beta 3 In Dendritic Arborization In The Supragranular Developing Cerebral Cortex, Zachary Logan Holley

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Integrin subunits have been implicated in axonal and dendritic outgrowth. In particular, a strong positive association has been found between mutations in integrin beta 3 (Itgb3) and autism spectrum disorder, but little is known about neuronal Itgb3 function in vivo. Many forms of autism spectrum disorder are thought to arise from dysfunctional dendritic arborization and synaptic pruning. Global knockout of Itgb3 in mice leads to autistic-like behaviors. Itgb3-/- mice also have reduced callosal volume, a key neuroanatomical correlate of autism. Here, we test the hypothesis that Itgb3 is required for normal dendritic arborization in layer II/III pyramidal …

Does Acute Preprandial Exercise Modify Postprandial Inflammation After A High Fat Meal In Young And Older Adults?, William Wisseman May 2019

Does Acute Preprandial Exercise Modify Postprandial Inflammation After A High Fat Meal In Young And Older Adults?, William Wisseman

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

A single high-fat meal (HFM) can increase systemic inflammation (postprandial inflammation; PPI) and may be attenuated by recent exercise. However, the effect of preprandial exercise on PPI in older adults (OA) is not clear. Purpose: To determine if preprandial exercise attenuates PPI in YA and OA. Methods: 12 YA (23.3±3.9 years n= 5 M/7 F) and 12 OA (67.7±6 years, n= 8 M/4 F) completed two HFM challenges in a randomized order. During HFM alone, participants abstained from exercise 48 hours prior to the HFM session (except for the exercise session) and adhered to a 12 hour overnight …

Implementing A Discharge Navigator Reducing 30-Day Readmissions For Heart Failure And Sepsis Populations, Karen Weeks Jan 2019

Implementing A Discharge Navigator Reducing 30-Day Readmissions For Heart Failure And Sepsis Populations, Karen Weeks

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Clinical Projects, 2016-2019

A national focus for healthcare reform is preventing hospital readmissions. Thirty-day unplanned hospital readmissions impact patient outcomes and are costly to the healthcare system. This project explored the impact between the discharge navigator and 30-day unplanned readmissions for heart failure and sepsis populations in a 238-bed community hospital located in central Virginia. The primary aim of this discharge navigator project was to reduce 30-day readmissions for the heart failure and sepsis populations to meet the goals of the top quartile for like hospitals and the evaluation of cost avoidance for these readmissions. Heart failure and sepsis populations are high risks …
