The primary objective of this study was to examine the feasibility of study procedures to and explore the unmet needs and potential barriers of women with advanced COPD who may need palliative care (PC). This multi-method study was guided by the adapted Hierarchy of Needs Model and explored unmet care needs, assessed knowledge of PC services, and identified barriers that women experience when receiving or during the implementation of PC. Further exploration of PC needs by sex provided information on unmet care needs of women with advanced COPD. Brain and neural injury are a non-specific disease category that includes traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke. Both TBI and stroke are common, costly, and leading causes of severe disability in adults. Both stroke and TBI are responsible for substantial disability in working age adults, with stroke being the second leading cause of death worldwide [1] and TBI a major cause of disability in people younger than their 40's [2]. Patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 have germline mutations in the neurofibromin gene (NF1) and are prone to develop tumors in the nervous system and elsewhere throughout their lifespan. Loss-of-function mutations of the remaining functional copy of the NF1 tumor suppressor gene in the Schwann cell lineage results in development of benign tumors known as dermal and plexiform neurofibromas. Mutations in additional tumor suppressor genes, like p53 and CDKN2A, subsequently transforms plexiform neurofibromas into highly aggressive malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). Antecedent conditions that affect the heart, such as aortic stenosis (AS), can develop into left ventricular pressure overload (LVPO). LVPO is associated with increased myocardial interstitial fibrosis, specifically fibrillar collagen, that leads to increased myocardial stiffness. Patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) to correct AS demonstrate significant but incomplete regression of fibrosis. Although current therapies normalize hemodynamic load, treatments that regress collagen content within the myocardium remain a critical need. To elucidate cellular mechanisms of this persistent fibrosis in LVPO, we utilized a transverse aortic constriction (TAC) and removal of the constriction (unTAC) murine model.
