Tobacco And Covid-19, Palak Srivastava, Palak Srivastava
Annual Research Symposium
The relationship between tobacco use and COVID-19 has been a subject of ongoing research. Evidence suggests that tobacco may contribute to an increased susceptibility to respiratory infections, potentially exacerbating the severity of COVID-19 symptoms.

Development Of A Portable And Rapid Decalcification Device For Oral Hard Tissue Specimens, Upasana Das, Vijayalakshmi Bhat, Taniya Feroz, Sowmya Sv, Dominic Augustine
Annual Research Symposium
Decalcification is a routinely carried out procedure by oral pathologists, as the lesions involving the pulp can only be seen and identified through decalcified sections. The present methods involve usage of chemical agents, either with inorganic acids which dissolves the calcium to form soluble calcium salts or with chelating agents. Even though the chelating agents preserve the tissue morphology and show excellent microscopic picture, it has less diagnostic efficacy, as the time taken for it to decalcify the specimens is considerably high. It becomes important for us to develop a decalcification technique which will be faster and will maintain the …

Double-Blinded Randomized Control Trial Investigating The Efficacy Of Probiotic Mouth Rinse In Enhancing Oral Health, Sudeep C B Prof. Dr., Sunil P M Prof. Dr.
Annual Research Symposium
The efficacy of probiotic mouth rinse in enhancing oral health was investigated through a double-blinded randomized controlled trial involving 45 children aged 12 to 15 over a two-week period. Comparing probiotic mouth rinse, chlorhexidine mouth rinse, and a control group, plaque and gingival accumulation were assessed using established indices. Results indicated both probiotic and chlorhexidine groups exhibited reduced plaque compared to the control, with the probiotic group showing superior reduction in gingival inflammation. These findings suggest the potential of probiotic mouth rinse in improving oral hygiene and overall oral health.

Exploring The Interplay Between Alzheimer's Disease And Periodontitis: Insights From Clinical Data And Inflammatory Biomarkers, Sandra Arun
Annual Research Symposium
Alzheimer's disease, a complex neurodegenerative disorder marked by cognitive decline, may have a intriguing link with periodontitis—a chronic inflammatory oral condition. This study investigates the literature evidence regarding the association between Alzheimer's disease and periodontitis. Our research aims to determine if individuals with periodontitis face an elevated risk of Alzheimer's and if shared inflammatory pathways underlie this association.

Overlooked Dental Disease In Cbct Imaging And The Impact Of Oral Radiologist Interpretation, Jared Fausnaught
Annual Research Symposium
This study aims to underscore the necessity for a comprehensive interpretation of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) volume images obtained by dentists. The research demonstrates and quantifies potentially overlooked dental pathology, categorizing incidental findings into three groups: 1) requiring some form of treatment or follow-up, 2) necessitating follow-up (monitoring) only, and 3) demanding no further treatment or follow-up.

Role Of Oral Microbiota In Cancer Development, Vanessa Gunderson
Role Of Oral Microbiota In Cancer Development, Vanessa Gunderson
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
More individuals die from oral cancer every year than from melanoma, cervical cancer, and ovarian cancer in the United States. Further, the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer has remained stagnant for over forty years, which is almost unseen across any other form of cancer. This fact exposes that there is a major need to push for research, prevention, and education on oral cancer. To investigate this, a literature review was performed that looked at eight research studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This review revealed that without proper oral hygiene and care, one’s oral bacterial …

Too Much Of A Good Thing: Case Of Fluoride Toxicity, Swet Patel, John Polunin, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Trent Malcolm
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Overall, the beneficial role of fluoride for the maintenance of proper dental hygiene has been known for many decades which has been corroborated by a plethora of research. Media and culture have further highlighted how using fluoride supplementation can help with dental cavities. It is clear that just as there are benefits to fluoride usage, there also risks. Further awareness needs to be made that showcases the downfalls of excess fluoride use. Labels need to be placed on fluoride products that emphasizes the dosing. It is imperative that people are educated on the toxicity of fluoride as too much of …

Assessment Of Dental Care In Children With Congenital Heart Disease, Mollie Walton
Research Days
Background: The incidence of infective endocarditis (IE) is significantly higher in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) compared to the general population. Studies have investigated the incidence of IE in adults with CHD to identify the factors that contribute to the development of IE. One such factor is suboptimal oral health. Several studies have shown that children with CHD have higher levels of untreated oral disease as compared to children without CHD.
Objectives/Goal: Identify factors that may affect compliance with routine dental care, including: age, sex, severity of CHD, repair/palliation, and qualification for prophylactic antibiotics.
Methods/Design: A retrospective chart review …

Developing A Dental Trauma-Anxiety Measure Comparing U.S. And International Care, Margaret Tajirian
Developing A Dental Trauma-Anxiety Measure Comparing U.S. And International Care, Margaret Tajirian
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Background
The aim of this study was to improve upon the Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) by developing the empathy-based International-Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (I-MDAS). This measure was produced and utilized to compare the dental experiences and anxiety levels of international patients versus national patients in the United States.
Methods
The I-MDAS is composed of the International scale and the original MDAS scale. Of 465 participants, 41.3% comprised the national population and 58.7% comprised the international population. Information about demographics, past negative dental experiences, and current dental anxiety was collected.
Results
There was no significant difference in dental anxiety levels …

Dental Disparities: A Quantitative & Regional Analysis Of Male Oral Health In The United States, Hannah Merritt, Gordon Rakita
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
Project of Merit Winner
Multiple factors contribute to the oral health of male individuals in the United States, including economic, regional, and gender disparities. My study compares health care coverage and poverty rates to indicators of oral health status and dental care access such as percentage of tooth lost, number of dental visits, and oral health services at federally qualified health centers. This oral health data is drawn from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention across all fifty states in the year 2018 and from the United States Census. By examining this data, I will be able to answer …
