Are Hydroxyapatite Toothpastes The Answer To Fluoride Free Patients?
Richardson, Samantha 1 and Vaughan, Kelly 2
Dental Hygiene Program, Virginia Commonwealth University
Abstract:
Objectives/Aims: With the rising trend to become more clean with our ingredient lists, we are facing more patients refusing fluoride treatments and fluoridated toothpastes. This trend has been prevalent in our younger generations due to parents only wanting the purest natural ingredients for their children and now declining fluoride application. The goal of this literature is to find a safe alternative toothpaste that will be just as effective as fluoride.
Methods: This review of literature has been …

Silver Diamine Fluoride: Preventing Dental Caries, Renee S. Bingman
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Purpose
The study was designed to determine awareness and knowledge of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) among dental hygiene program directors and determine if schools have included SDF education to their curriculum.
Methods
A descriptive survey was used to gather information from all United States dental hygiene program directors.
Results
The survey had a max response from 39 school directors. With 92.31% of schools indicating SDF as a product of interest only 76.92% currently provided education to students. There are 76.92% of schools providing SDF education to students yet only 34.21% of those schools are providing SDF education to the faculty. …
Total Salivary Protein Concentration And Its Correlation To Dental Caries, Emyli Peralta, Jonathan Joseph
Total Salivary Protein Concentration And Its Correlation To Dental Caries, Emyli Peralta, Jonathan Joseph
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
According to the World Health Organization, dental cavities are the number one chronic disease in children. Saliva coats the teeth all day and serves many functions to maintain and protect teeth. Saliva has many proteins that can be both detrimental and essential to the preservation of tooth enamel. The purpose of this study was to determine if a correlation exists between the total protein concentration in saliva and the prevalence of cavities in the mouth. We hypothesized that there would be a positive correlation between total salivary protein concentration and the prevalence of cavities in the participant.Saliva samples were collected …
Xylitol In Preventing Dental Caries, Nicholas Fields, Tu Bui
Xylitol In Preventing Dental Caries, Nicholas Fields, Tu Bui
Dental Hygiene Student Scholarship
Abstract
Problem: Dental caries is a common form of tooth infection among adults and children. The disease is easily transmissible, and therefore a great focus should be put on prevention to ensure healthy and proper oral hygiene for the population. Xylitol use has been proposed as one of the most effective preventive interventions against dental caries.
Methods: The literature review engaged different electronic databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library in evaluating the effectiveness of xylitol use in preventing dental caries in both children and adults. Articles used in the review were published between 2016 …

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
The prevalence of dental caries, a major public health problem in high-income countries, is gradually increasing in many low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence and severity of caries in the immature permanent first molars (PFMs) of children aged 7–9 years. Methods: This work is a retrospective analysis of caries in immature PFMs as observed from the panoramic radiographs of patients aged 7–9 years who presented to the pediatric clinic. The mean number of decayed, missing, or filled teeth (DMFT) and caries severity of immature PFMs were assessed. Results: A total of 3,112 …

Fluoride Varnish Application In The Pediatric Population, Ellen Gnaedinger
Fluoride Varnish Application In The Pediatric Population, Ellen Gnaedinger
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Purpose: The United States (U.S.) has a persistent problem of dental caries in primary teeth with a greater prevalence of dental caries found in minority and poor children. The majority of children in the U.S. experience dental caries in their primary teeth by age eight. This problem could be addressed by primary care providers applying fluoride varnish (FV) to children's teeth starting at the age of primary tooth eruption. The causes of dental caries in children’s primary teeth are multifactorial and therefore require multiple interventions. Around the world providers are utilizing FV as an effective and easily administered strategy. This …

Get In The Zone: A Survey Of Dental Professionals' Knowledge Of Ozone Therapy, Emily Hannah
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Ozone therapy has been used in medicine for many years to treat a variety of ailments. Ozone is an unstable triatomic molecule made up of three oxygen atoms. This molecule has the ability to kill bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. The researcher first was curious if there has been research done on uses of Ozone Therapy in the dental setting. After reviewing the literature there is indeed a use for Ozone Therapy to treat a host of dental problems including periodontal disease, ulcers, and carious lesions (also known as cavities). However, there are conflicting conclusions in the literature as to …
