Stereomicroscopic Evaluation Of Dentinal Microcracks After Instrumentation Of Curved Canal With Rotary Files In Two Motions, Nupur Vasava, Shreya Modi, Chintan Joshi, Sweety Thumar, Anisha Parmar, Kruti Jadawala

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Objective: This study aimed to examine the effects of three distinct file systems with two motion types—rotary and reciprocation—on the development of dentinal microcracks after root canal preparation using a stereomicroscope. Methods: Sixty mandibular molars with a curvature of 30° were decoronated and divided into three groups (Vortex Blue, Mtwo, and ProTaper Next) and two subgroups (rotary and reciprocating motions). The samples were then instrumented with the files, dyed with 1% methylene blue dye, and sectioned horizontally at 3, 6, and 9 mm from the root apex. The dentinal microcracks were inspected using a stereomicroscope at 40× magnification. One-way analysis …

Objective: Root canal anatomy significantly impacts the working length determination. This study aimed to investigate the effect of the preflaring technique on the accuracy of four electronic apex locators. Methods: Forty-five single-canal central maxillary teeth were selected. The working length was measured before and after the coronal preparation by four types of electronic apex locators in the range of ±0.5 and ±1 mm matched for the apical constriction. The actual working length was calculated under a microscope. Data were analyzed using ICC and paired t-tests in SPSS16. A p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The accuracies of Root ZX, DTE, Denjoy, and Coxo apex …

Adolescents from minority groups are particularly susceptible to poor oral hygiene behaviors, including lack of daily flossing. This cross-sectional study aimed to conduct an exploratory behavioral research to identify evidence-based (theory-based) approaches to promote flossing behavior among African American/Black and Latinx/Hispanic (minority) adolescents. A 39-item psychometrically valid web-based questionnaire was used to collect responses from a nationwide sample of minority adolescents aged 10–17 years residing in the United States. The data were analyzed using bivariate and multivariate statistical methods. Of 520 minority adolescents (260 African American/Black and 260 Latinx/Hispanic adolescents), the proportion of flossing was nearly equally split in the …

LGBTQ+ populations constitute increasing proportions of children, adolescents, and adults in the United States. Compared to their heterosexual counterparts, this group suffers from health inequities, including oral health. The report “Oral Health: Advances and Challenges” identified the LGBTQ+ community as an underserved population which faces significant barriers in accessing oral health care. Coverage of LGBTQ+ topics in formal education settings in both dental schools and dental hygiene programs is scarce, which contributes to inequities within this group. Increasing curriculum content related to LGBTQ+ populations is of utmost importance to promote optimal patient-provider interactions while improving oral health outcomes. Ensuring equity …

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The Ten-Minute Evidence-Based Dentistry Column illustrates how to implement the evidence-based dentistry search process to quickly identify and apply the best literature to answer a clinical question. Through critical appraisal, the author of this article answers the clinical question of the effectiveness of vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) compared to bonded orthodontic retainers in maintaining tooth positioning and promoting oral hygiene. The study reviews existing literature and highlights the challenges in evaluating the two types of retainers, primarily due to patient compliance with VFRs. While some studies suggest that bonded retainers provide better short-term retention, the choice between retainers depends on various …

Bullied Because Of Their Teeth: Evidence From A Longitudinal Study On The Impact Of Oral Health On Bullying Victimization Among Australian Indigenous Children, Md Irteja Islam, Verity Chadwick, Tuguy Esgin, Alexandra Martiniuk

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Making life better for Indigenous peoples is a global priority. Although bullying and oral health have always been a topic of concern, there is limited information regarding the impact of this problem on the general population, with no evidence in this regard among the Australian Indigenous population. Thus, we aimed to quantify the relationship between bullying victimization and oral health problems by remoteness among 766 Australian Indigenous children aged between 10–15-years using data from the LSIC study. Bivariate and multilevel mixed-effect logistic regression analyses were employed. Findings indicated children self-reported bullying more than parents reported their children were being bullied …

Dental Students' Perceptions Of Dental Hygienists' Education And Scope Of Practice, Cynthia Metzger May 2022

Dental Students' Perceptions Of Dental Hygienists' Education And Scope Of Practice, Cynthia Metzger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oral health is strongly correlated to systemic health in the United States. Dental professionals play a significant role in addressing the oral health and prevention of disease for populations in the United States. Because many areas in the United States lack access to dental care, the federal government considers dental hygienists part of the solution. It is now paying attention to restrictive dental hygiene scope of practice rules in each state. State dental boards, comprised mainly of dentists, make these rules based on their perception of dental hygienists' lack of education. This study explored fourth-year dental students' perceptions of the …
