Research indicates that social communication impairments are a defining and persistent feature of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). Social communication consists of what an individual knows about social skills (i.e., social cognition) and how they observably respond in social situations (i.e., social behavior). In typical language acquisition, word learning is an induction problem. When word learners hear an unfamiliar word, they make assumptions about the possible referent and its meaning. For nouns, this is relatively easy as word learners can rely on perceptual and pragmatic cues. For verbs, these two cues are fleeting, and word learners require additional kinds of cues for their meaning to be acquired. This case study examined the relationship between phonological processing abilities and reading skills of three young adults who had a history and formal diagnosis of a reading, writing, and/or auditory processing impairment. In addition to a standardized reading assessment, the participants were asked to complete a series of assessments that measured a specific aspect of auditory or visual phonological processing abilities including phonological awareness, phonological memory, and rapid automatic naming skills. A cervical Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potential (cVEMP) is one of the few objective vestibular diagnostic tests available for pediatric populations. This test evaluates the functionality of the saccule end organ through an inhibitory reflex on the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle that inhibits the level of electromyographic (EMG) activity (Wiener-Vacher, 2013). Because the saccule response is measured as an inhibition of EMG in the SCM, it is imperative that the SCM have a tonic contraction prior to eliciting the response and that the contraction of the SCM is equal on the right and left sides. It is widely acknowledged that a team approach is preferred practice and contributes to optimizing the surgical, dental, speech and psychosocial outcomes for individuals with CLP. Young adulthood often marks the transition from child-centered interdisciplinary care to adult-centered care. There is a paucity in literature relating to the transition of care for young adults with CLP. The purpose of this survey research is therefore to explore the CLP team practices regarding young adults with CLP.

Relationship Between Self-Compassion, Self-Perception, And Stuttering Severity, Colleen Hogan

The present study investigated the possibility of a relationship between self-compassion, self-perception, and stuttering severity in adults who stutter. Four adults who identify as people who stutter were administered the Self-Compassion Scale, the Self-Perception Profile for Adults, the Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering, and the Stuttering Severity Instrument. Results indicated a negative correlation between stuttering severity and self-compassion. A relationship was found between self-perception and stuttering severity and self-compassion in only one participant. It was concluded that practices of self-compassion may be beneficial in speech therapy for adults who stutter, and that both self-perception and self-compassion scales …

Though the envelope following response (EFR) has potential to become an effective tool for hearing aid validation, studies have observed a considerable degree of within-subject variation with stimulus polarity that could affect its clinical usefulness. This study investigated whether a relationship exists between the polarity-sensitive variation observed in EFR amplitude and that observed in the latencies of a related neural response, the auditory brainstem response (ABR). Low frequency masked clicks and the dual-f₀ stimulus /susaʃi/ were used to evoke alternating polarity ABRs and EFRs, respectively, in 31 normal hearing adults. Objective: We investigated whether language production is atypically resource-demanding in adults who stutter (AWS) versus typically-fluent adults (TFA).

Methods: Fifteen TFA and 15 AWS named pictures overlaid with printed Semantic, Phonological or Unrelated Distractor words while monitoring frequent low tones versus rare high tones. Tones were presented at a short or long Stimulus Onset Asynchrony (SOA) relative to picture onset. Group, Tone Type, Tone SOA and Distractor Type effects on P3 amplitudes were the main focus. P3 amplitude was also investigated separately in a simple tone oddball task.

This project replicates and extends previous work on coarticulation in velar-vowel sequences in English. Coarticulatory data for 46 young adult speakers, 23 who stutter and 23 who do not stutter show coarticulatory patterns in young adults who stutter that are no different from typical young adults. Additionally, the stability of velar-vowel production is analysed in token-to-token variability found in multiple repetitions of the same velar-vowel sequence. Across participants, identical patterns of coarticulation were found between people who do and do not stutter, but decreased stability was found in velar closure production in a significant subset of people who stutter. Previous data suggest the metrical properties of a word may influence the time course of phonological encoding, particularly in adults who stutter. The purpose of the present study is to examine phonological and metrical encoding skills in fluent and non-fluent adults, in particular the medial stress-bearing vowel. Investigators used a silent phoneme monitoring paradigm to assess reaction times for all phonemes within nonword CVCCVC stimuli. Nonword repetition (NWR) is known to be a less biased measure for assessing language abilities of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) children (Dollaghan & Campbell, 1998).
