Aim of the study: Most survivors of an in-hospital cardiac arrest do not leave the hospital alive, and there is a need for a more patient-centered, holistic approach to the assessment of prognosis after an arrest. We sought to identify pre-, peri-, and post-arrest variables associated with in-hospital mortality amongst survivors of an in-hospital cardiac arrest.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients ≥18 years of age who were resuscitated from an in-hospital arrest at our University Medical Center from January 1, 2013 to September 31, 2016. In-hospital mortality was chosen as a primary outcome and unfavorable discharge …

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2020-)

Aims for Improvement

  • Improve average time to defibrillation after VFib/pVTach cardiac arrest to < 2 minutes within an 8 month interval at TJUH and JHN.
  • Improve the percent of VFib/pVTach cardiac arrests that are defibrillated within the recommended 2 minute interval by 30% at TJUH/JHN within an 8 month interval

Myasthenic crisis is a life-threatening condition commonly associated with respiratory failure and may present in unusual ways. However, there is paucity in the literature about the cardiac manifestations of myasthenia gravis. We present a case of a 61-year-old male who presented to the emergency room with upper respiratory infection symptoms who soon thereafter suffered sudden cardiac arrest. He was found to have shortened PR interval pre and post arrest onelectrocardiogram (EKG). Only past medical history, discovered post cardiac arrest, was myastenia gravis. All other causes of cardiac arrest were ruled out, and it was deemed to be due to a …

State-Level Cpr Education Legislation Associated With Higher Survival After Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest In Older Adults, Megan Barnes, David G. Buckler, Tyler D. Alexander, Marissa Lang, Alexis Zebrowski, Douglas J. Wiebe, Benjamin S. Abella, Brendan G. Carr Jan 2020

State-Level Cpr Education Legislation Associated With Higher Survival After Out-Of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest In Older Adults, Megan Barnes, David G. Buckler, Tyler D. Alexander, Marissa Lang, Alexis Zebrowski, Douglas J. Wiebe, Benjamin S. Abella, Brendan G. Carr

Phase 1

Introduction: State-level legislation requiring CPR education prior to high school graduation is associated with an increased likelihood of community-level CPR training. CPR Legislation has also been shown to be associated with increased bystander CPR. We hypothesized that states with CPR Legislation would be associated with higher survival following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).

Methods: Utilizing 2014 Medicare Claims data for emergency department visits and inpatient stays, we identified OHCA via ICD-9-CM code. CPR Legislation data was collected through online statute review. Exposure to CPR Legislation was assessed using the patient state of residence. All disposition categories were considered survival to discharge …
