Doctor Merritt, of New York City, became the seventy­seventh president of the Association at the 1939 meeting in Milwaukee. In his presidential address, Doctor Merritt recommended expansion of the Association's activities, especially in dental health education and in research. Doctor Merritt, a periodontist, served as president of the New York Academy of Dentistry, the American Academy of Periodontology, and the American College of Dentists. He helped to found six dental journals, the Columbia University School of Dentistry, the International Association for Dental Research, the Children's Aid Society Dental Clinic, and the Guggenheim Dental Clinic.
