The Effect Of Artificial Insemination Catheters Covered With Protective Sheaths On Conception Rates In Heifers, Berrak Işık Soytürk, Hüseyin Erdem

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Artificial insemination is a biotechnological method widely practiced in cattle, first introduced in 1912. The present study investigated the effect of pierceable plastic sheaths used during artificial insemination of Holstein heifers on conception rates. A total of 110 heifers aged 15–18 months, detected to be in estrus based on observation, were included in the study. These heifers were randomly divided into two equal groups. The experimental group (n = 55) underwent insemination using an insemination catheter covered with a disposable, pierceable plastic sheath on day 0. Conversely, the control group (n = 55) underwent insemination using the standard conventional technique. …

Effects Of Use Of Conventional And Sexed Semen On Conception Rate, Calf Sex, Calf Birth Weight, And Stillbirth In Holstein Heifers, Tahi̇r Bayril

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Pregnancy rate is low in artificial insemination with sexed semen compared to conventional semen. This situation poses a major problem for dairy farms. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of semen type on conception rate, calf sex and birth weight, stillbirth, pregnancy loss, and postpartum maternal body weight (MBW) in Holstein heifers inseminated with sexed (n = 229), and conventional semen (n = 153). The female and male calf ratios of the heifers inseminated with sexed and conventional semen were found to be 88% to 54.8% and 12% to 45.2%, respectively. There was a significant difference …

n order to reduce estrus synchronization cost, utilization of residual progesterone (P4) in the used controlled internal drug release (CIDR) device upon sanitization can be possible. Two datasets were compiled from 8 and 7 research articles involving 3434 (2653 heifers + 771 lactating cows + 10 ovariectomized cows) and 7301 cattle (3879 heifers + 3422 lactating cows) to evaluate blood P4 concentration and conception rate, respectively, in response to repeatedly used CIDR devices after sanitization via autoclaving and disinfection. As the number of CIDR usages increased, blood P4 concentration decreased linearly (y = -0.484X + 3.135, R2 = 0.99, P < 0.001). Blood P4 concentration (1.52 vs. 2.20 ng/mL; P < 0.002) and conception rate (40.76 vs. 32.96%, P < 0.05) for lactating cows were lower than those for heifers. The sanitization method did not affect blood P4 concentration, but reused CIDR device subjected to disinfection was associated with reduced conception rate. In summary, depending upon the initial P4 load (1.38-1.90 g), the CIDR device could be used twice in lactating cows and four times in heifers after autoclaving to achieve target blood P4 concentrations.

Pregnancy Rate Following Artificial Insemination Or Natural Service In Postpartum Estrus Synchronized Beef Cattle, Abdul Malik, Abd Wahid Haron, Rosnina Yusoff, Azhar Kasim, Sabri Mohd Yusoff

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The objective of this study was to investigate the pregnancy rate following artificial insemination (AI) or natural service (NS) in postpartum estrous synchronized beef cattle. A total of 85 Brangus cows, postpartum, were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 consisted of 35 cows and was further subdivided into 7 groups, each consisted of 5 cows that were naturally mated. Group 2 consisted of 40 cows that were artificially inseminated. Estrus synchronization was carried out using a controlled internal drug releasing device (CIDR) containing 1.38 mg of progesterone, for 7 days. Group 1 cows were mixed with bulls at a 1:5 …

Subclinical endometritis contributes to repeat breeder syndrome in dairy cows. This study evaluated the effect of intrauterine cephapirin benzathine administration after timed artificial insemination (TAI) on the conception rate (CR) in repeat breeder dairy cows. To determine the antibiotic effects, all cows (n = 335) that had more than 3 services with no clinical abnormalities of the reproductive tract received the same combined synchronisation protocol: an ear implant containing progestagen using the Ovsynch protocol and a third gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) administration 7 days after TAI. Cows in the treatment group (TRT; n = 160) received intrauterine cephapirin 12 h after …

Sixty-nine Holstein heifers were used to evaluate the effect of progesterone supplementation after timed artificial insemination (TAI) on conception rates of heifers under heat stress. Heifers were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: 1) control treatment (C), visual detection of estrus. Heifers detected in estrous were inseminated according to the AM-PM procedure (n = 23); 2) TAI (n = 24), using a CIDR device (insert containing progesterone) placed intravaginally on day -10 and removed on day -2 with PGF2α given on day -3. Heifers were given 0.5 mg of ECP at CIDR insertion and a second injection (0.5 mg …
