Anxiety is a phenomenon commonly experienced by patients awaiting surgery (Jlala et al., 2010). Anxiety has been linked to negative impacts “on the induction of anesthesia, wound healing, risk of infection, and postoperative recovery” (Stern, 2013). The alleviation of preoperative anxiety is a positive and desired outcome for perioperative patients. It is estimated that 50-75% of postoperative patients feel they are not receiving adequate pain relief (Schneider, 2018). Both patients and nurses feel overwhelmed when pain is not well managed.
