A Pilot Study Of Sheep Disease Surveillance In Western Australia, Roy Butler
A Pilot Study Of Sheep Disease Surveillance In Western Australia, Roy Butler
Conference papers and presentations
A pilot study of sheep disease surveillance was conducted in 2014-2015 on four farms in the eastern wheatbelt of Western Australia. The participants observed their sheep, sufficiently closely to notice disease, at least every second day. Most of the disease syndrome reports related to fewer than five sheep, demonstrating that farmers noticed problems in individual sheep, and not only in groups of sheep. Of a total of 66 disease syndrome observations reported over 12 months, the three most frequently occurring syndromes were found dead + sudden death (combined), skin lesions, and lameness.
The Grazing Of Goats In The Pastoral Areas Of Western Australia : Best Management Practice Guidelines, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
The Grazing Of Goats In The Pastoral Areas Of Western Australia : Best Management Practice Guidelines, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia
Land resources best practice series
The Land Administration Act 1997 (LAA) requires a pastoralist to manage and work the land within a pastoral lease to its best advantage and use methods of best pastoral and environmental management practices to achieve sustainable land use. For the purposes of the pastoral provisions in Part 7 of the LAA, a distinction is made between authorised and prohibited stock. Recent amendments of the classification of goats, from prohibited stock to authorised stock, require that a best practice management framework be developed to ensure future sustainability of the industry. This document recognises the existence of a de facto managed goat …

Eradicating Footrot From Western Australia - A Farmer's Guide, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Eradicating Footrot From Western Australia - A Farmer's Guide, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Agriculture reports
Virulent footrot can occur on any farm in the medium to high rainfall zone. Persons who regularly buy and sell sheep take a greater risk, but even properties with a closed breeding flock are at risk from stray sheep. People often associate footrot with properties managed by inefficient farmers. This is a false belief. Many good farmers have found the disease in their sheep, including high profile studs. Footrot can strike anywhere and often without warning. It is important to remember that once it is found; getting to know and understand the disease will help you to beat it. A …

A Low Rainfall Livestock Option: Analysis Of Fat Tail Sheep In The System, Evan Burt, Tanya Kilmister, Matthew Young
Agriculture reports
This paper aims to briefly: • investigate farming systems issues in the medium and low rainfall regions of the South West Land Division of Western Australia; • identify options and opportunities for the fat tailed sheep breeds • capture some research about the tail; and • investigate market options surrounding the fat tailed sheep breeds. This analysis will provide a brief understanding of the scale of the fat tailed sheep breeds within Western Australia and provide a brief overview of products of the sheep highlighting potential opportunities.
The History And Performance Of Dorper Sheep In Western Australia, Roy Butler, S C. Wiese, M C. Young
The History And Performance Of Dorper Sheep In Western Australia, Roy Butler, S C. Wiese, M C. Young
Conference papers and presentations
The history of Dorper sheep in Western Australia is reviewed, since their arrival as embryos from South Africa, in 1996. Limited data are provided - mainly small-scale observations and anecdotes - on reproduction, growth rates, carcass characteristics, diseases, and some other issues that have been encountered with the sheep in Western Australia. Predictions are made for the future of Dorper sheep in Western Australia.

Agriculture reports
Between October 1991 and January 1992 (1991 Annual Ryegrass Toxicity(ARGT) season) 89 farms reported a total of 102 outbreaks of ARGT to the Department of Agriculture Western Australia. This second annual report provides summary information on these occurrences. The main body of the report focuses on mortality records collected by Departmental advisory staff when farmers sought information on ARGT during this period.

Trial 84V2.
Location: Vasse Research Station.
The background, aims and measurements have been detailed in previous annual reports (SEE 1987 Experimental Summary).
As in the previous 4 years of this trial the 1988 pasture measurements have confirmed the hypothesis that "increasing stocking rates" result in a reduction in pasture growth rates, and in turn a reduction in total annual pasture production.

Studies On Times Of Lambing In Ewes Grazing Subterranean Clover Based Pastures In Relation To Stocking Rates In South-Western Australia, H Lloyd Davies
Studies On Times Of Lambing In Ewes Grazing Subterranean Clover Based Pastures In Relation To Stocking Rates In South-Western Australia, H Lloyd Davies
Technical Bulletins
The investigation is reported in six parts: effect on ewe liveweight and fertility, lamb losses, effect on lamb growth and subsequent growth after weaning, wool production, pasture production and composition, and conclusions and practical implications. The results show that in the absence of supplementary feeding the physiological requirements of ewes in late pregnancy are better met by spring rather than autumn lambing.

Survey Of Parasite Control Practices In Sheep And Cattle, J R. Edwards, R V R Gwynn, R A. Love, Richard Thomas Norris, G Dalton-Morgan, Brown Besier
Technical Bulletins
Farms in the Albany, Esperance, Jerramungup and Katanning districts were surveyed to determine parasite control strategies currently used, to evaluate the adoption of recommended control practices and to detect areas of ineffective parasite control. For cattle, the number of drenches given in the low rainfall zone was higher than the number given in the high rainfall zone.
Survey Of Post-Weaning Management, Growth And Mortality Of Merino Weaners, Richard Thomas Norris
Survey Of Post-Weaning Management, Growth And Mortality Of Merino Weaners, Richard Thomas Norris
Technical Bulletins
Flock owner's excessive use of supplementary feed, especially of hay, lack of knowledge of nutritional requirements of weaners and failure to follow recommended methods of internal parasite control were the main areas of inefficient management. Management of the weaners as observed in the first year, suggested that previous advice by the Department of Agriculture was not well accepted or had not reached some producers.

Agriculture reports
This report deals with the area of responsibility of the Moora District Office of the W.A. Department of Agriculture. The Moora advisory district consists of seven shires which cover 2,811,400 hectares. Agriculture in the advisory district varies according to climate and soil type, Sheep and cattle production are the main enterprises in the high rainfall (coastal) areas. Mixed cereal sheep production is the main system in the medium and low rainfall areas with cereals increasing in importance as annual rainfall diminishes.

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Introduction.
Our knowledge, and consequently our advise to farmers on the needs for copper fertilizers in the wheatbelt have been largely based on thoses of plants - cereals in particular. For one thing, definitive experimentation is easier with cereals than sheep.

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
In the late 1920's the seven million acres of virgin land
between Hyden and Salmon Gums were considered for settlement under
the "3,500 farms scheme" because it constituted "practically the
only large area of wheat lands in a suitable climatic zone not then
settled in Australia" (Teakle 1939).
