Comparison Of Condition Indicies (K) Of Spot (Leiostomus Xanthurus) From The Elizabeth And York Rivers, Virginia, Kinloch Nelson Aug 1988

Comparison Of Condition Indicies (K) Of Spot (Leiostomus Xanthurus) From The Elizabeth And York Rivers, Virginia, Kinloch Nelson

Reports

Spot from the York and Elizabeth Rivers were taken in 1983, 1984, and 1985. The length to weight ratio was used to find the equation for Condition Index (K). Condition Indices for the two populations were found and plotted against temperature. Regression lines were plotted for each group. From 6 to 19 degrees, the Condition Index of the two populations rises at similar rates. From 19 degrees on, the Elizabeth River Condition Index rises steadily while the York K drops down to approach the levels of winter.

Seasonal Phytoplankton Assemblages In The Nansemond River, Virginia, Cindy Eleanor Shomers Jul 1988

Seasonal Phytoplankton Assemblages In The Nansemond River, Virginia, Cindy Eleanor Shomers

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A monthly phytoplankton study was conducted on the Nansemond River from November 1984 to October 1985. Light microscopy was utilized to characterize the resident populations, their cell concentrations and to provide a general comparison to other regional studies of river systems considered more polluted. The results divided the flora into two major categories. The first group was a pico-nanoplankton component composed of Cyanobacteria and Chlorophycean cells 1-10 um in diameter. The second group was a microplankton assemblage of Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae, Cryptophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Cyanobacteria and Euglenophyceae. The pico-nanoplankton had a unimodal abundance pattern with peak concentrations occurring in spring. The microplankton …

Rehabilitation Of The Troubled Oyster Industry Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay, William J. Hargis Jr., Dexter S. Haven

VIMS Articles

After 1885 Virginia's lower Chesapeake Bay system produced more oysters per year than any other area in the United States and remained predominant until 1960. Since then she has surrendered supremacy as annual harvests of her troubled oyster industry have steadily declined. Numerous factors were responsible for the tremendous productivity of the lower Bay's oyster beds; a number have been involved in its decline. Natural events, such as the catastrophic epizootics of the early 1960's, continuing disease and predation, increased salinities of drought years and great freshets of tropical storms have contributed significantly to the reduction. Pollution and other man-related …
