Sporobolus cynosuroides (L.) P.M. Peterson & Saarela¼Spartina cynosuroides (L.) Roth is a temperate zone rhizomatous grass that often is a dominant species in coastal brackish marshes on the Gulf coast and Atlantic coasts of the United States where salinity ranges from 0 to 10 psu. Sporobolus cynosuroides (L.) P.M. Peterson & Saarela ¼ Spartina cynosuroides (L.) Roth is usually absent where salinity values are .12 psu. Sporobolus cynosuroides occurs in coastal habitats characterized by infrequent tidal flooding and moderate nutrient levels. Aquatic ecosystems are inundated by environmental pesticides. This study, observed the dose-dependent effects of pesticides cocktail (metalachlor, linuron, isoproturon, tebucanazole, aclonifen, atrazine, pendimethalin, and azinphos-methyl) and elevated temperature (32 °C for 4-week exposure) on morphology of gills and kidneys, and expression of nitrotyrosine protein (NTP), dinitrophenyl protein (DNP), catalase (CAT), superoxidase dismutase (SOD), Na+/K+-ATPase, renin, and apoptosis in tissues of goldfish. Additionally, the effects on the free-swimming behavior were also observed. Histological analysis showed wide-spread damage in tissues at higher temperature and pesticides co-exposure. Rhizophora mangle L. is a tropical and subtropical mangrove species that occurs as a dominant tree species in the intertidal zone of low-energy shorelines. Rhizophora mangle plays an important role in coastal zones as habitat for a wide range of organisms of intertidal food webs, as a natural barrier to coastal erosion, and as carbon sequestration. A review of mangrove literature has been performed, but a review specifically on red mangroves has not. The invasive corals, Tubastraea coccinea and Tubastraea micrathus, are known to thrive in reefs within the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Many studies have indicated that species within this genus are spreading throughout the western Atlantic due to their successful invasion on degraded and artificial reef systems. In the Northern GOM, artificial reefs have been created from decommissioned oil rigs and sunken vessels to provide a hard substrate for coral growth. Avicennia germinans (L.) L. is a pantropical, subtropical, and occasionally warm-temperate mangrove species that occurs on shorelines that have a broad horizontal tidal range. Also known as black mangrove, stands typically develop under anoxic, water-logged conditions in substrates of silt or clay. Black mangrove can tolerate salinity values ranging from 0 to 90 parts per thousand. Salt is excreted from salt glands on both leaf epidermal surfaces, and aerosol salt spray and salt crystals are frequently observed on the upper leaf epidermis. Avicennia germinans is viviparous. example of chloroplast capture has been identified in Juniperus sabina from Bulgaria and Greece in the Balkan peninsula. Nuclear DNA and overall morphology clearly indicate a close relationship to Juniperus sabina, whereas the cpDNA from these populations is very uniform and is nearly identical to that of J. thurifera, an unrelated species currently growing in France, Spain and Morocco. The new taxon is recognized as Juniperus sabina var. balkanensis R. P. Adams and A. Tashev. At present, this new variety is known only from locations in Bulgaria and Greece.

An example of chloroplast capture has been found in Juniperus sabina from Bulgaria and Greece in the Balkan peninsula. The cpDNA from these populations is very uniform and is nearly identical to that of J. thurifera (currently growing in France, Spain and Morocco). The new taxon is recognized as Juniperus sabina var. balkanensis R. P. Adams and A. Tashev. At present, the variety, with the thurifera cpDNA, is known only from Bulgaria and Greece.

Analyses of nrDNA and four cp DNAs (petN-psbM, trnS-trnG, trnD-trnT, trnL-trnF) plus morphology and leaf essential oils revealed that the weeping (flaccid), decurrent leafed junipers near Topia, Durango are closely related to J. poblana (formerly J. flaccida var. poblana) and should be recognized as a new variety, J. poblana var. decurrens R. P. Adams var. nov. The leaf oil of J. p. var. decurrens is dominated by α-pinene (53.2%) with moderate amounts of β-pinene (5.3%), myrcene (4.3%), δ-2-carene (1.2%), δ-3-carene (2.5%), limonene (3.2%), β-phellandrene (3.1%), terpinolene (1.0%), (E)-caryphyllene (1.1%), and germacrene D (1.5%) and shares eleven unique terpenes with J. …

Borrichia frutescens (L.) DC. is a New World warm-temperate, subtropical, and tropical zone, perennial subshrub that is an important species in hypersaline coastal sites. Also known as sea ox-eye, it tolerates salinities ranging from less than 20 ppt to 130 ppt. It occurs in substrates low in organic matter and deficient in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nearly all reproduction is vegetative from an extensive rhizome system. Populations of this species recover quickly after coverage by wrack. Stands of B. frutescens often dominate the landward border of salt marshes.

Beach morning glory, Ipomoea imperati (Vahl) Griseb. = I. stolonifera (Cirillo) Gmelin is a pantropical, prostrate vine that is an important pioneer species in the backshore of coastal beaches of six continents and many islands. The landward distribution of beach morning glory is influenced by dispersal and competition, and its seaward distribution is determined by the physical environment acting through movement of seeds away from the water and high seedling mortality in the backshore. Sesuvium portulacastrum (L.) L. (sea purslane, cenicilla) is a pantropical, perennial, trailing herb (Aizoaceae) with pink-purple or occasionally white flowers that grows on coastal beaches of five continents and many islands. Herein we present a review of the biology of S. portulacastrum. It is an important pioneer species on sandy beaches in the subtropics and tropics, where its stoloniferous, mat-forming growth habit promotes embryonic dune formation in belts parallel to the shoreline. Colonies act as barriers to intercept and hold water and wind transported sand. Sesuvium portulacastrum's success as a colonizing species is related, in large part, to its …
