Responses Of Astrocytes In Culture After Low Dose Laser Irradiation, David T. Yew, D. R. Zheng, C. Au, W. W. Y. Li

The effect of Helium-Neon low dose laser on astrocytes was investigated in cultures of isolated astrocytes from albino neonatal rats. The laser appeared to inhibit the growth of astrocytes as exemplified by the smaller sizes of the cells and the decreased leucine uptake in each cell after treatment. Temporary decrease in the number of mitoses was also observed, but this trend was reversed soon after. Electron microscopic studies revealed an increase in buddings from cell bodies and processes (branches) after irradiation.

Thirty-six four-way cross (Chester White x Landrace x Large White x Yorkshire) growing bmws and gilts were used to investigate the effects of replacing graded levels of protein from soybean meal with equivalent levels of protein from rubber seed meal in 16% CP semipurified diets on the performance characteristics, hematocrit, plasma metabolites and N utilization of pigs.

Lack of oxygen is the major cause of limited plant growth in waterlogged soils. When soils become waterlogged less gas diffuses to and from the roots through the soil pores; there are changes in concentrations of mineral elements in soil solutions; and toxic products of roots and soil microorganisms begin to accumulate. These changes adversely affect germination, growth and development of plants.

The efficacy of the urea dilution technique in estimating the empty body composition of pigs weighing 50 kg was evaluated in three trials using 17 contemporary (Large White x Landrace x Hampshire x Duroc) and 8 Nebraska Gene Pool x contemporary pigs. Blood samples were collected via ear catheter before infusion (-60, -30 and 0 min) and at various times (3 to 90 min) after urea infusion (2.16 mmol/kg live BW), and analyzed for plasma urea. Oyster shells were planted on four successive months (May to August 1986) in contiguous plots at Jones Shore Bar in the Potomac River, Maryland, to study the effect of differences in time of cultch planting on settlement and survival of oyster spat. The plots were usually sampled at two-week intervals from time of planting through November, 1986, and once in June, 1987. A massive concentration of the tunicate Molgula manhattensis covered the bottom in all plots within four to six or eight weeks following shell planting. Development Of An Aspen Sucker Stand Following Irrigation And Fertilization, G.W. Wyckoff, D.W. Einspahr, M.K. Benson

A 16-18 year-old aspen stand was harvested in 1969. Aerial biomass components were determined and soils evaluated. Treatments of fertilizer, irrigation, fertilizer + irrigation and control were applied over a seven year period following harvest. Stand measurements were taken periodically over 18 years. Fertilization produced growth increases of 45-55 percent. Height, diameter, and stems per acre were affected by treatments. Guidelines for fertilizer application were developed from leaf tissue analysis.
