This review contains a brief description of the Abrolhos System and its special values. It also states the goal and principal objectives for management during the next ten years (2006-2016), along with updated strategies to achieve these objectives. The document succinctly outlines the direction for multiple use management of the Houtman Abrolhos Islands as determined by the Abrolhos Islands Management Advisory Committee (AIMAC). The Committee’s role is to advise the Minister for Fisheries on management of the Abrolhos Islands and the Abrolhos Islands Fish Habitat Protection Area.

The protection of productive agricultural land and the avoidance of land use conflicts in rural areas are important objectives of the Western Australian Government. They are reflected in the State Planning Strategy, Agriculture Western Australia’s strategic plan, ‘Focus on the Future’ and draft Statement of Planning Policy (SPP) No. 11 – Agricultural and Rural Land Use Planning Policy. It is Department of Agriculture policy that regulation is only used when all other approaches to address land degradation have failed. Our thrust is to encourage land holders to move towards using land within its capabilities as they continue to adopt sustainable farming systems. Underlying this approach is a self regulatory philosophy with land conservation district committees playing an important management and coordination role. Nevertheless the community expects that land degradation will be controlled and legislation is available to underpin or complement the good intentions of most land holders.
