Molecular Characterization Of Wild Pleurotus Ostreatus (Mw457626) And Evaluation Of Β-Glucans Polysaccharide Activities, Ghazwan Q. Hasan Ph.D., Shimal Y. Abdulhadi Ph.D.

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Pleurotus ostreatus is a common cultivated edible mushroom worldwide. The fruiting bodies of P. ostreatus is a rich source of a β-glucans polysaccharide. The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of β-glucans as a natural polysaccharide produced by P. ostreatus as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer. The molecular identification of P. ostreatus isolate was confirmed by Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequence. The sequence alignment and phylogenetic evolutionary relationship of studied ITS sequence were performed against some deposited sequences in GenBank. The analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as well as the result of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Biological Studies Of Novel Organoantimony(V) Cyanoximates, Kevin Anthony Pinks Aug 2020

Synthesis, Characterization, And Biological Studies Of Novel Organoantimony(V) Cyanoximates, Kevin Anthony Pinks

MSU Graduate Theses

The requirement of new antimicrobial treatments has become an urgent field recently. Multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria are now resistant to common antibiotics. To antagonize such bacteria 8 novel organoantimony(V) cyanoximates were synthesized to be characterized and submitted for biological activity studies. Eight organoantimony(V) cyanoximates were characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis, IR-, 13C{1H} NMR, some with UV-visible spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray analysis. Antimicrobial Disk studies indicated Sb(Ph)4(ACO) and Sb(Ph)4(ECO) had significant antimicrobial effect against all three strains: two gram-negative a) Escherichia coli strain S17 and b) Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAO1, alongside a …

Influence Of Biomimetic Chelating Packaging On Natural Antimicrobial Efficacy, Paul Castrale Oct 2017

Influence Of Biomimetic Chelating Packaging On Natural Antimicrobial Efficacy, Paul Castrale

Masters Theses

The iron chelating molecule, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is used in food applications for the preservation of oxidation prone ingredients. Research has suggested that EDTA is also capable of enhancing the antimicrobial effectiveness of various compounds including naturally-derived antimicrobials. With consumer demand for cleaner food labels, there remains an opportunity to introduce new chelating technology to replace synthetically-derived EDTA. Through photographting and chemical conversion, hydroxamic acid ligands were covalently bound to polypropylene films resulting in polypropylene-graft-poly(hydroxamic acid) (PP-g-PHA). The resulting films demonstrated an ability to chelate 64 nmol/cm2 from an iron saturated environment or 163 nmol/cm …

Cytotoxic And Antimicrobial Effects Of Silver-Containing Surfaces, Sarah Goderecci Mar 2017

Cytotoxic And Antimicrobial Effects Of Silver-Containing Surfaces, Sarah Goderecci

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines applications of sputtered silver coatings as alternatives to traditional antibiotic treatments. Given the increase in reports of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, new treatments and coatings for in-dwelling medical devices such as catheters and orthopedic implants are necessary. Silver oxide films were deposited onto Ti surfaces to examine the efficacy of such coatings against a variety of bacterial species both in vitro and in vivo. Bacterial growth studies showed that coatings exhibited antimicrobial activity against a range of bacterial species acting either in a bacteriostatic or bactericidal mechanism, depending on the target. Limited toxicity to in vitro mammalian cells was …

Physicochemical And Toxicological Assessment Of Antimicrobial Ε-Polylysine-Pectin Complexes, Cynthia L. Lopez Pena Aug 2015

Physicochemical And Toxicological Assessment Of Antimicrobial Ε-Polylysine-Pectin Complexes, Cynthia L. Lopez Pena

Doctoral Dissertations

ε-Polylysine is an appealing FDA-approved, all natural antimicrobial biopolymer effective against a wide range of microorganisms. Its implementation is greatly limited by its strong cationic charge, which has been linked to instability in food systems, perceived astringency and bitterness, and the ability to inhibit lipid digestion. Previous studies have shown that controlled complexation of ε-polylysine with anionic pectin is able to prevent instability and astringency in simplified model food systems, while maintaining the antimicrobial character of polylysine. Isothermal titration calorimetry, micro-electrophoresis, microscopy, and turbidity analyses of the stability of electrostatic pectin-polylysine complexes in the presence of strongly anionic κ-carrageenan, and …

Chitosan-Cellulose Composite For Wound Dressing Material. Part 2. Antimicrobial Activity, Blood Absorption Ability, And Biocompatibility, April Harkins, Simon Duri, Luther C. Kloth, Chieu D. Tran

Clinical Lab Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Chitosan (CS), a polysaccharide derived from chitin, the second most abundant polysaccharide, is widely used in the medical world because of its natural and nontoxic properties and its innate ability for antibacterial and hemostasis effects. In this study, the novel composites containing CS and cellulose (CEL) (i.e., [CEL + CS]), which we have previously synthesized using a green and totally recyclable method, were investigated for their antimicrobial activity, absorption of anticoagulated whole blood, anti-inflammatory activity through the reduction of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and the biocompatibility with human fibroblasts. The [CEL + CS] composites were found to …

Synthesis Of An Antimicrobial Textile Coating, William M. Morris Dec 2011

Synthesis Of An Antimicrobial Textile Coating, William M. Morris

Chemistry and Biochemistry

A titania nanosol was synthesized and coated onto nylon/cotton blended textile substrates. The substrates were characterized via SEM for adhesion and nanoparticle formation, then subjected to antimicrobial efficacy tests. The titania nanosol was successfully coated on to textiles samples. Particles were observed to be around 2 by 3 micrometers and formed between the interstitial space of textile fibers. Although larger than typical nanoparticles, the coatings exhibited what seemed to be antimicrobial activity. Titania nanosol coated textile samples were subjected to Kirby Bauer Assay in the presence of S. aureus. The coated textile sample exhibited an inhibition of growth around its …

Group 11 Metal Compounds With Tripodal Bis(Imidazole) Thioether Ligands. Applications As Catalysts In The Oxidation Of Alkenes And As Antimicrobial Agents, Fangwei Liu, Reema Anis, Eunmi Hwang, Rafael Ovalle, Armando Varela-Ramírez, Renato J. Aguilera, María Contel

Publications and Research

New group 11 metal complexes have been prepared using the previously described tripodal bis(imidazole) thioether ligand (N-methyl-4,5-diphenyl-2- imidazolyl)2C(OMe)C(CH3)2S(tert-Bu) ({BITOMe,StBu}, 2). The pincer ligand offers a N2S donor atom set that can be used to coordinate the group 11 metals in different oxidation states [AuI , AuIII, AgI , CuI and CuII]. Thus the new compounds [Au{BITOMe,StBu}Cl][AuCl4]2 (3), [Au{BITOMe,StBu}Cl] (4), [Ag{BITOMe,StBu}X] (X = OSO2CF3 - 5, PF6 - 6) and [Cu{BITOMe,StBu}Cl2] (7) have been synthesized from reaction of 2 with the appropriate metal precursors, and characterized in solution. While attempting characterization in the solid state of 3, single crystals of the …
