Background

Mycobacterial disease is a major cause of fatality, with 1.5 million deaths per 10 million infections annually. Due to the emergence of multi- and extensively-drug resistant clinical isolates, mycobacteriophage (MP) are being investigated as an alternative to antibiotics.

Objectives

The objectives of this study were: to characterise an emerging cohort of MP, to determine suitable in vivo modes of delivery for MP including encapsulation, to examine the application of a MP-based viability assay, and to examine the functionality of MP in raw milk.

Background

Mycobacterial disease is a major cause of fatality worldwide, with approximately 1.5 million deaths for every 10 million infections. These infections are difficult to treat due to the intrinsic resistance of its mycolic acid rich cell wall to many antibiotics. There is potential for mycobacteriophage (MP) to be used therapeutically for multidrug- and extensively-drug resistant infections. Mycobacterium smegmatis mc2 155 is a useful substitute for slow-growing pathogenic mycobacteria, as it propagates quickly under lab conditions. Intensive rice cropping in Bangladesh is causing alarming shortages of forage and low ruminant productivity. This is also causing degeneration of soil fertility. Therefore it is imperative to identify some approach to integrate fodder production into rice cropping systems on rural farms. The integration of legume forage may improve soil fertility and soil structure, thus enhancing crop yield and may provide high quality feed for livestock (Haque 1992). Studies were done to investigate the effects of rice/forage integration on forage yield, soil fertility and also on milk yield of cows fed on the grown forages.

Objective: This study aimed to provide the basis of quantity traceability for the analysis of amoxicillin residues in milk. The dairy industry uses enzymes to make cheese, alter product flavor, and eliminate lactose. The activities of these enzymes have been measured in clear buffered solutions, but because of the limitations of spectrophotometric methods, enzyme activities have not been measured in opaque or colored dairy products where they are used. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) can be used to determine reaction kinetics in opaque and colored solutions by measuring the heat rate from enzyme-catalyzed reactions as a function of time. Cinisara is a Sicilian autochthonous breed of dairy cow. Qualitative characteristics of milk yield are influenced by composition of pasture and its changes over the seasons (Di Grigoli et al., 2000). The grazing resource is characterized by notable variability, even in adjacent areas, because of different environmental conditions, such as aspect, the nature of soil and altitude. The aim of this research is to study the effect of season of production on qualitative characteristics of Cinisara cow milk in farms located at different altitudes.

Conjugated linoleic acid occurs naturally in foods, however the main dietary sources are dairy products and other foods derived from ruminants. Staphylococcus aureus is a remarkable infectious agent, and with the development of antibiotic resistance by S. aureus, finding new, effective, and safe alternative therapeutic options in animals and humans is crucially demanded. In this study, the occurrence of S. aureus was explored by collecting nonmastitis bovine milk samples first, and then the effects of herbal extracts on methicillinresistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains isolated from cow's milk and humans in the hospitals were investigated. Chlorate has become a concern in the food and beverage sector, related to chlorine sanitizers in industrial food production and water treatment. It is of particular concern to regulatory bodies due to the negative health effects of chlorate exposure. This study investigated the fate of chlorate in raw milk and isolated bacterial strains of interest responsible for chlorate breakdown. Unpasteurized milk was demonstrated to have a chlorate-reducing capacity, breaking down enriched chlorate to undetectable levels in 11 days.
