Determining The Ecological And Physiological Factors Contributing To The Competitive Success Of Prochlorococcus In The Oligotrophic Ocean, Benjamin C. Calfee

Doctoral Dissertations

Prochlorococcus is a genus of extremely successful marine cyanobacteria. This success is realized through its pervasive biogeographical range and presence in almost all open ocean environments where it usually it the dominant phytoplankton. Limited capabilities of culturing and genetic manipulation of this organism have resulted in assumptions about this success overwhelmingly based on field observations. These studies have assumed adaptations for resource uptake and utilization in nutrient limited environments to cause dominance of Prochlorococcus over other photosynthetic microbes. In an attempt to definitively explain this through laboratory culture, we developed a culturing system to assay questions of nutrient limitation effects …

Effects Of Localized Oxygen Production By Electrolysis On The First-Generation Glucose Sensor Response, Nandita Halder Dec 2021

Effects Of Localized Oxygen Production By Electrolysis On The First-Generation Glucose Sensor Response, Nandita Halder

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Glucose sensors are very important for detecting blood glucose both in vitro and in vivo. First-generation glucose biosensors were based on the glucose oxidase (GOx) enzyme using molecular oxygen as the electron acceptor and therefore oxygen dependent. Unfortunately for in-vivo work, oxygen in the body is variable and limited. Alternative approaches to overcome the oxygen dependency came with their own limitations. The widely used and commercially available ex-vivo glucose test strip uses a mediator in place of oxygen to free it from oxygen dependency. The mediator-based technology, in most cases cannot be transferred to in vivo applications due to the …

Oxidative Desulfurization Of Diesel Fuel Using Three Kinds Of Carboxylic Acids Supported By Iron(Iii) Chloride, Jalil H. Kareem Jun 2021

Oxidative Desulfurization Of Diesel Fuel Using Three Kinds Of Carboxylic Acids Supported By Iron(Iii) Chloride, Jalil H. Kareem

Polytechnic Journal

Aqueous carboxylic acids (CA) are generally used as attractive catalytic extractants in the field of desulfurization of petroleum products. In the present study, a triple system consisting of CA-ferric chloride-hydrogen peroxide has been used for the removal of aromatic S-compounds from partially hydrotreated diesel by liquid−liquid oxidative-extraction. The influence of various operating parameters affecting the oxidative desulfurization was experimentally investigated. Formic acid (HCOOH), acetic acid (CH3COOH), and propanoic acid (CH3CH2COOH) as aqueous solutions with hydrogen peroxide and iron(III) chloride (FeCl3) as oxidant and catalytic agent, respectively, were used. All experiments were carried out at 55°C with different oxidant to sulfur …

The Impact Of Oxygen Availability And Oxidative Stress On Regulation Of Cyclic-Dimeric-Gmp In Listeria Monocytogenes Strain F2365, Anna G. Welch May 2021

The Impact Of Oxygen Availability And Oxidative Stress On Regulation Of Cyclic-Dimeric-Gmp In Listeria Monocytogenes Strain F2365, Anna G. Welch

Honors Theses

Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive foodborne pathogen that results in the infectious disease listeriosis. The second messenger molecule cyclic-dimeric-GMP has been found to be responsible for the regulation of expression of many of its virulence factors with diguanylate cyclases and phosphodiesterases regulating the intracellular concentration of cyclic-di-GMP through synthesis and degradation, respectively. This study investigated the possibility that the availability of oxygen is the environmental signal crucial to the regulation of these enzymes. Prior research in our laboratory has demonstrated that the intracellular concentration of cyclic-di-GMP is elevated when exposed to anaerobic conditions. Due to this, it was hypothesized that …

In skin connective tissue, dermal fibroblasts appear to be the most prevalent cell type. They are in charge of making the extracellular matrix that makes up the skin's connective tissue, and also involved in wound healing. Moreover, they produce Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) which helps in activation of Insulin growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R). This receptor helps to control cell proliferation and responses to DNA-damaging substances such as UVB radiation, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and therapeutic drugs. According to our findings, lack of IGF-1 expression in the dermis of elderly patients due to fibroblast senescence (senescence is characterized by which cells …
