The effects of three rates of nitrogen (N) fertilizer applied to monocultures of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.), and mixed ryegrass / clover swards, grazed by dairy cows on soil mineral nitrogen levels in the top 10cm of soil were studied on a dryland pasture in south-western, Victoria, Australia. Ammonium and nitrate were monitored for 14 months. Clover monocultures had significantly greater NO3- levels, however a similar trend was not observed for NH4+ . A laboratory-scale closed dynamic air flow system was carried out to assess the effect of enriched rice husk biochar on ammonia volatilization, soil exchangeable ammonium, and available nitrate from the applied urea in comparison to urea alone under waterlogged conditions. Treatments with enriched rice husk biochar (5, 10, 15, and 20 t ha-1) significantly minimized ammonia volatilization, however, only biochar with rates of 5, 10, and 15 t ha-1 had significantly retained more soil exchangeable ammonium by 14% – 43%. Little is known about the forest herbaceous layer’s contributions to nitrogen (N) cycling under varying levels of N deposition, at different stages of forest succession, in watersheds with different aspects, and under different tree species. The objectives of this study were to quantify nitrogen reductase activity (NRA) of two tree species, red maple and sugar maple, and surrounding common herb-layer species at the tissue (foliage, roots) and plot level and to assess how these species affect the concentrations of nitrate, ammonium, and organic N in soil water collected in lysimeters beneath these trees.
