Large (48-g), isonitrogenous doses of rice and whey protein have previously been shown to stimulate similar adaptations to resistance training, but the impact of consuming smaller doses has yet to be compared. We evaluated the ability of 24-g doses of rice or whey protein concentrate to augment adaptations following 8 weeks of resistance training.

What Factors Predict Upper Body Push To Pull Ratios In Professional Firefighters?, Justin J. Merrigan, Adam A. Burke, Marcie B. Fyock-Martin, Joel R. Martin

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 1605-1614, 2020. Shoulder joint injuries are common for professional firefighters. A potential cause of shoulder injury is an imbalance between anterior (push) and posterior (pull) shoulder joint musculature. Understanding what contributes to these imbalances may help to identify areas needing improvement. The purpose of this study was to investigate different push to pull (P2P) ratios and the relationships among common upper body fitness assessments, body composition, and push to pull (P2P) ratios in firefighters. Thirty-three professional firefighters completed the following testing protocol: one-repetition maximum (1RM) bench press, pull-up repetitions to failure, push-up repetitions to …

Impact Of Silica Fume On The Strength Characterizes Of Contaminated Soil, Mohamed M. Arbili, Mehmed Karpuzcu, Mohammed M. Ali Jun 2020

Impact Of Silica Fume On The Strength Characterizes Of Contaminated Soil, Mohamed M. Arbili, Mehmed Karpuzcu, Mohammed M. Ali

Polytechnic Journal

In this paper a silica fume (SF) utilized as an admixture for improving the strength characterizes of contaminated soil and create new useful soils. Compaction test and direct shear test are used to evaluate the strength properties of clean and contaminated soil. Mixing SF with contaminated soil by crude oil is a rare study carried out. The strength characterizes of clean and polluted soil with crude oil was investigated. Three amount of light crude oil is combined with soils artificially in the percentage of 3%, 6%, and 9% by dry weight. However, three portions of SFs are used in the …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 13(6): 859-872, 2020. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of horizontal and incline bench press as well as the combination of both exercises on neuromuscular adaptation in untrained young men. Forty-seven untrained men were randomly assigned to one of the three groups: 1) a horizontal bench press group (n= 15), 2) an incline bench press group (n= 15), and 3) a combination (horizontal + incline) group (n= 17). Training was conducted once a week for eight weeks, with equalized number of sets among groups. Muscle thickness, isometric strength and electromyography …

A Comparison Of Muscle Activation Among The Front Squat, Overhead Squat, Back Extension And Plank, David Bautista, Dustin Durke, Joshua A. Cotter, Kurt A. Escobar, Evan E. Schick

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 13(1): 714-722, 2020. The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activation of the scapula, leg, and trunk among the front squat (FS), overhead squat (OHS), back extension (BE) and plank (PL). Seven recreationally trained men (age: 28 ± 3.6 years, body mass: 92 ± 26.1 kg, height: 175 ± 5.3 cm, 3-RM front squat test: 125 ± 49.8 kg, 3-RM overhead squat test: 91 ± 15.5 kg) participated in this within-subject crossover design. Two isometric exercises (plank and Biering-Sorenson back extension) were also included for trunk musculature comparisons. Neuromuscular activitation of the …

In-Season Hip Thrust Vs. Back Squat Training In Female High School Soccer Players, Nicole A. Millar, Lauren M. Colenso-Semple, Robert G. Lockie, Risto H.J. Marttinen, Andrew J. Galpin Jan 2020

In-Season Hip Thrust Vs. Back Squat Training In Female High School Soccer Players, Nicole A. Millar, Lauren M. Colenso-Semple, Robert G. Lockie, Risto H.J. Marttinen, Andrew J. Galpin

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 49-61, 2020. The barbell back squat provides a highly effective training stimulus to improve lower body strength, speed, and power, which are considered key components of athletic performance in many sports. The barbell hip thrust exercise utilizes similar musculature, and is popular among practitioners, but has received far less scientific examination. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an in-season resistance training program with hip thrusts or back squats on physical performance in adolescent female soccer players. Fourteen players completed identical whole-body resistance training twice per week for 6 weeks, …

Readiness To Train: Return To Baseline Strength And Velocity Following Strength Or Power Training, Alexander Vernon, Christopher Joyce, Harry G. Banyard Jan 2020

Readiness To Train: Return To Baseline Strength And Velocity Following Strength Or Power Training, Alexander Vernon, Christopher Joyce, Harry G. Banyard

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

This study investigated the return to baseline of movement velocity and maximal strength following a strength-orientated session and power-orientated session in the free-weight back-squat performed with maximal concentric velocity. Fourteen strength-trained males completed a strength-orientated session (five sets of five repetitions @80% of a one-repetition maximum) and a power-orientated session (three sets of six repetitions @50% one-repetition maximum ) in a randomised order over two weeks (e.g. strength week 1, power week 2). The back-squat was then performed with loads of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 90% and 100% one-repetition maximum at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h following the strength …

When Task Constraints Delimit Movement Strategy: Implications For Isolated Joint Training In Dancers, Paige E. Rice, Sophia Nimphius Jan 2020

When Task Constraints Delimit Movement Strategy: Implications For Isolated Joint Training In Dancers, Paige E. Rice, Sophia Nimphius

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Athletic performance is determined by numerous variables that cannot always be controlled or modified. Due to aesthetic requirements during sports such as dance, body alignment constrains possible movement solutions. Increased power transference around the ankle-joint, coupled with lower hip-joint power, has become a preferential strategy in dancers during leaps and may be considered a dance-specific stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) demand. Newell's theoretical model of interacting constraints includes organismic (or individual), environmental, and task constraints describing the different endogenous and exogenous constraints individuals must overcome for movement and athletic performance. The unique task constraints imposed during dance will be used as a …
