Resource Assessment Report Western Rock Lobster Resource Of Western Australia, Simon De Lestang, Nick Caputi, Jason How

WA Marine Stewardship Council report series

The western rock lobster Panulirus cygnus (George) is taken by commercial and recreational fishers throughout its geographic range along the lower west coast of Western Australia. The main commercial fishery for P. cygnus is the West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery (WCRLMF), which is Australia’s largest single-species fishery, currently worth about $400 million annually. Western rock lobster provides the basis for the economies of a number of coastal towns and also supports a recreational fishery.

A Review Of Size Limits For Finfish In Western Australia : Discussion Paper, Western Australia. Dept. Of Fisheries

Fisheries management papers

This management paper is designed to present proposals for changes to size limits that apply to finfish within Western Australia in line with the associated policy. In November 2016, the Department of Fisheries (Department) developed a policy on the application of fish size limits in Western Australia (Fisheries Management Paper no. 279 - Policy on the application of fish size limits in Western Australia).

Fisheries management papers

Fisheries managers can utilise a range of different types of management tools to assist with the sustainable management of fish stocks and to achieve other fisheries management objectives. For commercial fisheries these types of tools may include input controls (e.g. a limit on the number of operators, explicit effort limits and gear restrictions) and output controls (e.g. total allowable catches, individual catch quotas) or spatial and temporal restrictions. Recreational fisheries often have daily bag limits and possession limits as quasi output controls, while seasonal or other temporal closures can operate as input controls and be a component of limiting total …

Draft Allocation Report Pearl Oyster (Pinctada Maxima) Resource / By The Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee, Integrated Fisheries Allocation Advisory Committee

Fisheries management papers

Integrated Fisheries Management (IFM) is an initiative aimed at addressing the issue of how fish resources in Western Australia should be shared between competing users within the broad context of “Ecologically Sustainable Development”, or ESD, so that they can be managed to a sustainable allowable harvest level. The Minister for Fisheries (Minister) established the Integrated Fisheries Management Allocation Advisory Committee (Allocation Committee), under Section 42 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA), in 2004 to investigate IFM resource allocation issues and make recommendations to him on optimal resource use.

Measurement Of Fisheries Compliance Outcomes : A Preliminary National Study : Frdc Final Report, E Price, Roy Melville-Smith, D King, Timothy J. Green, W Dixon, S Lambert, T Spencer

Fisheries research reports

This report presents the results of a project undertaken by a group of Australia and United States based fishery compliance experts to assess and compare methods for measuring fisheries compliance outcomes that can be used to assess and compare the effectiveness of fishery enforcement and compliance assistance activities. This eight month project was requested in 2013 by Australia’s National Fisheries Compliance Committee (NFCC) as a way to provide fisheries compliance groups with improved methods for measuring and tracking the effectiveness of their activities and for justifying and managing their budgets.

Review Of Potential Fisheries And Marine Management Impacts On The South-Western Australian White Shark Population, S.M Taylor, J.M Braccini, R. Mcauley, W.J Fletcher

Fisheries research reports

Following five fatal incidents involving white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) off the lower west coast of Western Australia between September 2011 and July 2012, as well as other highly-publicised non-fatal encounters with this species, in 2012 the State Government funded several new initiatives to better understand white sharks in Western Australia and the likely effectiveness of any community safety interventions in Western Australian waters.

Harvest strategies for aquatic resources managed by the Western Australian Department of Fisheries (the Department) are formal documents prepared to support the decision-making processes and ensure these processes are consistent with the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD; Fletcher 2002) and Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM; Fletcher et al. 2010). The objectives of ESD are reflected in the objects of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA), Section 3, and the draft Aquatic Resources Management Bill 2015 (ARMB), Clause 9, which will replace the FRMA once enacted.

Improving Efficiency In Generating Submissions And Consistency Of Outcomes For Marine Stewardship Council (Msc) Based Assessments, Warrick Fletcher, Daniel J. Gaughan, Lynda Bellchambers Dr

Fisheries research reports

The prevalence of fishery certification schemes and associated ecolabels has grown over the last ten years with numerous ecolabels now in the marketplace e.g. Friends of the Sea, Naturland, SAI Global Trust (Parkes et al. 2010, Washington and Ababouch 2011, Ward and Phillips 2013). However, one of the most prominent and well regarded, particularly by eNGOs, is the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) (Gutiérrez et al. 2012, Ponte 2012, Bush et al. 2013, Ward and Phillips 2013) which accounts for greater than 10 % of annual global harvest of wild capture fisheries (MSC 2014b).

Fisheries research reports

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are an Australian External Territory located in the Indian Ocean (12° 12" S, 96° 54" E). The group is comprised of two separate coral atolls, consisting of 27 islands. The southern atoll consists of 26 islands, surrounding a shallow lagoon, two of which are inhabited with a total population of approximately 600 people. Since 2002, a Service Delivery Arrangement (SDA) has been in place between the Department of Fisheries, Western Australia (DoF) and the Commonwealth Government of Australia to manage the fish resources of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (CKI).

Bioeconomic Evaluation Of Commercial-Scale Stock Enhancement In Abalone, Anthony M. Hart, Lachlan W.S. Strain

Fisheries research reports

The evaluation of commercial-scale stock enhancement was undertaken to determine its viability in the Western Australian Greenlip Abalone fishery. The key outcome of the project is that commercial-scale abalone stock enhancement is environmentally and economically achievable. The bioeconomic analysis revealed significant economic potential of a stock enhancement program for Australian Haliotis laevigata fisheries.

Innovative Development Of The Octopus (Cf) Tetricus Fishery In Western Australia, Anthony M. Hart, Stephen C. Leporati, Ross Marriott, D. V. Murphy

Fisheries research reports

In 2010 the broad-scale introduction of a new gear type, the trigger trap, saw a 260% (33 t in 2009 to 119 t in 2010) increase in octopus landings in the Western Australian Developmental Octopus Fishery (DOF). Deployed in waters previously unfished by the DOF, initial catches demonstrated that trigger traps were more efficient and captured a different component of the population, compared to open-ended shelter pots traditionally used in the fishery. This shift caused a surge of interest in commercial octopus fishing.
