The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil may help alleviate symptoms of delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) and improve recovery from exercise.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of fish oil supplementation on the time-course of post-resistance exercise muscle soreness in young untrained females.

METHODS: Seventeen non-resistance trained females (age 23.6 ± 3.0 y, % fat 27.4 ± 3.2, weight 60.2 ± 9.6 kg) were randomized into one of two groups: fish oil (6 g/d; 5:1 EPA:DHA) or placebo (6 g/d corn/soy oil). After consuming the supplements for one week, participants underwent a single bout of …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is caused from any type of activity that places unaccustomed loads on a muscle. Athletes are consistently pursuing methods to help decrease soreness. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of deep water running (DWR) and cold water immersion (CWI) on perceived muscle soreness and creatine kinase (CK) activity. Healthy participants (males=2, females =12; mean ± SD, 22.8 + 4.9 yrs; 38.0 + 7.8 yrs VO2max; 113.6 + 27.3 lbs 1RM) completed five days of data collection. Seven days following a 1 repetition maximum (1RM), participants completed an eccentric exercise …

Doms After Acute Strenuous Exercise And Massage, Cathleen Holub, John D. Smtih

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The art of massage therapy has been around for centuries and investigation of its effects on the human body continues. Purpose: This study is designed to determine if Swedish massage therapy reduces DOMS at 24- and 48-hours after a single bout of resistance exercise to fatigue. Methods: Twenty one volunteers completed a bout of body squats to exhaustion holding a 3.63 kg (8 lb.) weight for men and a 2.27 kg (5 lb.) for women, and after a one-minute rest did the same again but without the weight. This was immediately followed by a 20-minute Swedish massage on …
