Turkish Journal of Botany

The subtribe Asterinae (Astereae, Asteraceae) includes highly variable, often polyploid species. Recent findings based on molecular methods led to revision of its volume. However, most of these studies lacked species from Eurasia, where a lot of previous taxonomic treatments of the subtribe exist. In this study we used molecular phylogenetics methods with internal transcribed spacer (ITS) as a marker to resolve evolutionary relations between representatives of the subtribe Asterinae from Siberia, Kazakhstan, and the European part of Russia. Our reconstruction revealed that a clade including all Asterinae species is paraphyletic. Inside this clade, there are species with unresolved basal positions, …

Mechanisms Of Tolerance Differences In Cucumber Seedlings Grafted On Rootstocks With Different Tolerance To Low Temperature And Weak Light Stresses, Yan Li, Xuemei Tian, Min Wei, Qinghua Shi, Fengjuan Yang, Xiufeng Wang

Turkish Journal of Botany

Stresses of low temperature and weak light are major environmental limiters for horticultural production in greenhouses in northern China during winter and early spring. Grafting is regarded as a promising approach to enhance cucumber tolerance to these environmental stresses. However, it is still unclear why cucumber plants grafted on different rootstocks usually exhibit different tolerance. The responses of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. Cv. 'Xintaimici') seedlings that were grafted on three rootstock cultivars ('Kilameki', 'Tielizhen', and 'Figleaf gourd') to low temperature (5 °C) and weak light (100 µmol m-2 s-1) were investigated in this study. The results showed that, compared to …

Differential Expression Of Soluble Pyrophosphatase Isoforms In Arabidopsis Upon External Stimuli, Zahi̇de Nesli̇han Öztürk, Steffen Greiner, Thomas Rausch

Turkish Journal of Botany

In plants, pyrophosphate (PPi), generated in a wide range of reversible anabolic reactions, is hydrolyzed by pyrophosphatases. The presence of tonoplast- and Golgi-integral H+-translocating pyrophosphatases in plants led to the conclusion that plant cytosol has no soluble pyrophosphatase activity. However, the Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. Genome also encodes five soluble pyrophosphatase isoforms (Ppas). There are almost no data in the literature on their redundancy in plant metabolism; therefore, we performed expression analyses of A. Thaliana soluble pyrophosphatase isoforms in response to external stimuli including carbohydrate status, hormone action, and stress exposure. The results revealed pronounced specificity for each isoform. Interestingly, …
