Relating Freshwater Flow With Estuarine Water Quality In The Southern Everglades Mangrove Ecotone, Henry O. Briceño, Gabriel Miller, Stephen E. Davis Iii

Florida Bay is more saline than it was historically, and reduced freshwater flows may lead to more phosphorus inputs to the mangrove ecotone from the marine end-member. This is important given plans to restore freshwater flow into eastern Florida Bay. We investigated the relationships between salinity, nutrients, and hydrologic variables in the mangrove ecotone of Taylor Slough. We expected that total phosphorus (TP) would increase with salinity, reflecting a downstream marine source, while total nitrogen (TN) would increase with flow in the mangrove ecotone. Despite expectations of increased flows improving the ecological health of lower Taylor Slough and Florida Bay, …

Anthropogenic Disturbances In Estuarine Ecosystems: The Effects Of Altered Freshwater Inflow, Introduction Of Invasive Species, And Habitat Alteration In The Loxahatchee River, Fl, Zachary R. Jud

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the majority of Earth’s population living in coastal areas, estuarine ecosystems have been particularly affected by anthropogenic disturbances. My dissertation research focused on three interrelated types of human disturbance that affect estuaries: Anthropogenic alteration of freshwater inflow, the introduction of invasive species, and habitat alteration. Using the LoxahatcheeRiver(Jupiter, FL) as a model system, my goal was to understand how these disturbances affect estuarine organisms, particularly fishes. One of the most ecologically harmful disturbances affecting estuaries is anthropogenic alteration of freshwater inflow (and resulting changes in salinity patterns). To identify effects of freshwater inflow on the behavior of an ecologically …

Denitrification In Urban Coastal Environments: A Functional Gene Study, Samantha Denise Lindemann Jan 2014

Denitrification In Urban Coastal Environments: A Functional Gene Study, Samantha Denise Lindemann

Master's Theses

Eutrophication is a major anthropogenic stressor on aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Jamaica Bay is located in the southeastern portion of New York City, NY (NYC). Like many other estuaries, Jamaica Bay is impacted by anthropogenic N inputs from various sources. Despite eutrophic conditions, improvements in water quality over the last few decades have prompted government agencies to promote oyster restoration to help reduce anthropogenic N in NYC waters. The effect of eastern oysters on sediment bacterial communities responsible for denitrification in Jamaica Bay was previously unknown. Those samples exposed to oysters were predicted to have high denitrification gene abundances, and thus …

Seasonal Distribution Of Trachurus Mediterraneus (Steindachner, 1868) In The Golden Horn Estuary, İstanbul, Nazli Demi̇rel, Ahsen Yüksek Jan 2014

Seasonal Distribution Of Trachurus Mediterraneus (Steindachner, 1868) In The Golden Horn Estuary, İstanbul, Nazli Demi̇rel, Ahsen Yüksek

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Seasonal changes in the distribution of an important commercial and recreational fish species, Trachurus mediterraneus (Steindachner, 1868), from the family Carangidae were investigated in the Golden Horn Estuary of İstanbul. Environmental conditions were also considered to evaluate distributional patterns in the region. Sampled fish size ranged between 7.5 and 20.1 cm in total length and 3.4 and 86.2 g in total weight during the sampling period. Adult individuals (>12.5 cm) preferred not to be in the estuary during the summer period, while only immature adults were found with a 7.5-12.5 cm total length size range from May to August …
