Database Methods For Copy Number Variant Analysis Of One Hundred Disease Associated Genes In Human Congenital Heart Disease, Maureen E. Tuffnell Oct 2011

Database Methods For Copy Number Variant Analysis Of One Hundred Disease Associated Genes In Human Congenital Heart Disease, Maureen E. Tuffnell

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Human genetic variation occurs more commonly than was recognized after the completion of the Human Genome Sequencing Project in 2003. Submicroscopic human DNA analysis has revealed copy number variation (CNV) as the deletion or duplication of a genomic region potentially affecting gene dosage. Advanced genetic research now includes the study of CNVs in diseased subject groups compared to in house controls or online published datasets of control CNV data. Research labs choose from different bioinformatic algorithms to make the copy number calls. Solutions for further processing the copy number data into quantifiable form require collaboration with data analysts and include …

The Genetic Influence On The Placebo Effect Specific To Exercise Performance, Jennifer Wu May 2011

The Genetic Influence On The Placebo Effect Specific To Exercise Performance, Jennifer Wu

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Placebo treatments can be used to elicit many different physiological responses; however, the underlying mechanisms responsible remain unclear. Recent research has shown the possibility of a genetic influence on the placebo response in patients with mood disorders. In this study, we attempted to establish a similar relationship in healthy college-aged students. Force production was measured by isometric knee extension of the quadriceps muscles using maximum voluntary contractions (MVC). Subjects were given placebo treatments disguised as an undisclosed sports supplement with the information that the supplement was previously shown to provide immediate strength improvements following ingestion. Subject DNA was genotyped for …

Multi-Locus Evidence Of A Late Pleistocene Divergence And Sex-Biased Dispersal In The North American Wood Duck (Aix Sponsa), Christopher T. Bigley Jan 2011

Multi-Locus Evidence Of A Late Pleistocene Divergence And Sex-Biased Dispersal In The North American Wood Duck (Aix Sponsa), Christopher T. Bigley

The Pleistocene was characterized by fluctuations in climate causing repeated advances and retreats of glacial ice. The advancing ice sheets caused habitat fragmentation which initiated population divergence and speciation events between eastern and western avian populations within northern temperate forests. Based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences, North American Wood Duck (Aix sponsa) populations fit this model of divergence. However, mtDNA is maternally inherited, and thus may not reflect the genomic history of this species, because of male biased-dispersal, selection, or stochastic lineage sorting. To test the "Late Pleistocene divergence" hypothesis, I sequenced 11 independent nuclear introns (nuDNA) for …

Population Structure Of Island-Associated Pantropical Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Attenuata) In Hawaiian Waters, Sarah Shelby Courbis Jan 2011

Population Structure Of Island-Associated Pantropical Spotted Dolphins (Stenella Attenuata) In Hawaiian Waters, Sarah Shelby Courbis

Dissertations and Theses

Understanding gene flow, diversity, and dispersal patterns is important for predicting effects of natural events and anthropogenic activities on dolphin populations. With the very recent exceptions of false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens), spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris), and common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Hawaiian odontocete species are managed as single stocks within the U.S. Hawaiian Exclusive Economic Zone. These exceptions are a result of recent studies that have indicated that some species have populations that show fidelity to individual islands or groups of islands, resulting in genetic differentiation, often with management implications. The first part …
