Effectiveness Of Delayed Brush Cutting And Herbicide Treatments For Vegetation Control In A Seven-Year-Old Jack Pine Plantation In Northwestern Ontario, Canada, Azim U. Mallik, F. Wayne Bell, Yanli Gong

Aspen Bibliography

Efficacy of three conifer release treatments, i) single application of glyphosate (Vision™) herbicide, ii) multiple application of glyphosate herbicide, and iii) motor-manual brush cutting for controlling competing plants, particularly trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), pin cherry (Prunus pensylvanica), green alder (Alnus viridis spp. crispa), and beaked hazel (Corylus cornuta spp. cornuta), was studied in a seven-year-old jack pine (Pinus banksiana) plantation in northwestern Ontario, Canada. The single and multiple glyphosate applications were equally effective in controlling trembling aspen and pin cherry, causing over 90% stem mortality. The brushsaw treatment caused an initial decrease followed by an increase in stem density of …

Natural Fire Regime: A Guide For Sustainable Management Of The Canadian Boreal Forest, Yves Bergeron, Alain Leduc, Brian D. Harvey, Sylvie Gauthier Dec 2002

Natural Fire Regime: A Guide For Sustainable Management Of The Canadian Boreal Forest, Yves Bergeron, Alain Leduc, Brian D. Harvey, Sylvie Gauthier

Aspen Bibliography

The combination of certain features of fire disturbance, notably fire frequency, size and severity, may be used to characterize the disturbance regime in any region of the boreal forest. As some consequences of fire resemble the effects of industrial forest harvesting, conventional forest management is often considered as a disturbance that has effects similar to those of natural disturbances. Although the analogy between forest management and fire disturbance in boreal ecosystems has some merit, it is important to recognise that it also has its limitations. Short fire cycles generally described for boreal ecosystems do not appear to be universal; rather, …

What Makes An Animal Choose A Forage, Elizabeth A. Burritt, Frederick D. Provenza Dec 2002

What Makes An Animal Choose A Forage, Elizabeth A. Burritt, Frederick D. Provenza

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Consider the following scenarios: To cut the costs of ranching a researcher explores feeding cattle ammoniated straw in winter. Some of the cows maintain themselves on the diet while others lose weight, produce less milk and fail to conceive. A producer in Missouri plants a pasture rich in legumes and high in crude protein, yet his cattle prefer moldy hay and endophyte infected tall fescue to the legumes. Why do animals behave this way? Animals are thought to prefer foods that are palatable but what is palatability? We define palatability as the interrelationship between a food's flavor and postingestive feedback …

A Simple Test To Evaluate The Calibration Stability And Accuracy Of Infrared Thermocouple Sensors, Derek R. Pinnock, Bruce Bugbee Dec 2002

A Simple Test To Evaluate The Calibration Stability And Accuracy Of Infrared Thermocouple Sensors, Derek R. Pinnock, Bruce Bugbee

Techniques and Instruments

Accurately measuring surface temperature is not difficult when the surface, the sensor, and air temperatures are similar, but it is challenging when the surface temperature is significantly different than air and sensor temperatures.

We tested three Infrared Thermocouple sensors (IRT’s) that had been used for two years in a greenhouse environment. The importance of the correction for sensor body temperature was also examined.

Effect Of Sucrose Esters On Isothermal Crystallization And Rheological Behaviors Of Blends Of High-Melting Milk Fat Fraction And Sunflower Oil, M. C. Puppo, Silvana Martini, R. W. Hartel, M. L. Herrera Nov 2002

Effect Of Sucrose Esters On Isothermal Crystallization And Rheological Behaviors Of Blends Of High-Melting Milk Fat Fraction And Sunflower Oil, M. C. Puppo, Silvana Martini, R. W. Hartel, M. L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Crystallization kinetics and rhelogical behavior of blends of high-melting milk-fat fraction (HMF) and sunflower oil (SFO) with and without addition of the sucrose esters P-170, S-170, and P-1670 were investigated. Addition of sucrose esters delayed crystallization, as was evidenced by the longer induction times of crystallization (t) and the lower maximum solid fat content (Smax). Values of penetration force and time corresponding to the 1st peak of curves force compared with time also diminished with addition of SFO. When sucrose esters were added, a solid fat content greater than 10% at the 1st crystallization temperature was necessary to give a …

Effect Of Sucrose Esters And Sunflower Oil Addition On Microstructure Of A High-Melting Milk Fat Fractions, Silvana Martini, M. C. Puppo, R. W. Hartel, M. L. Herrera Nov 2002

Effect Of Sucrose Esters And Sunflower Oil Addition On Microstructure Of A High-Melting Milk Fat Fractions, Silvana Martini, M. C. Puppo, R. W. Hartel, M. L. Herrera

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effects of sunflower oil (SFO) and the sucrose esters (SE) P-1670, P-170, and S-170 on crystalline microstructure of a high-melting milk fat fraction (HMF) was studied by polarized-light microscopy (PLM) and confocal laser scanning microsopy (CLSM). The addition of SFO markedly diminished crystal size and delayed crystallization kinetics, as observed in PLM images. Addition of P-1670 modified crystallization behavior only slightly. Addition of P-170 and S-170, however, markedly diminished crystal size and led to more transparent crystals, with lower amount of solids in each crystal. These results show that the microstructural properties of HMF were modifed by addition of …

Effect Of Processing Conditions On Microstructure Of Milk Fat Fraction/Sunflower Oil Blends., Silvana Martini, M. L. Herrera, R. W. Hartel

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The effect of processing conditions on the crystallization of blends of a high-melting milk fat fraction and sunflower oil was investigated. Two cooling rates were selected for all studies: 0.1°C/min (slow rate) and 5.5°C/min (fast rate). Blends were crystallized in two conditions: (i) with agitation in an 80-mL crystallizer (dynamic), and (ii) on a microscope slide without agitation (static). The selected crystallization temperatures were 25, 30, and 35°C for both cooling rates. Photographs of the development of crystals with time were taken in both static and dynamic conditions, and the crystal size distribution was determined at the moment that the …

Non-Destructive Determination Of Leaf Expansion Using A Digital Camera, D. R. Pinnock, S. P. Klassen, Bruce Bugbee

Techniques and Instruments

Leaf expansion is reduced in mild water stress. Early detection of water stress can be accomplished with digital images taken at daily or hourly intervals.

Conclusions

  • Digital cameras can be used to determine leaf expansion and relative growth rate.
  • Digital cameras can also be used to detect early symptoms of water stress.

Status Of White-Tailed And Gunison's Prairie Dogs, Craig Knowles Nov 2002

Status Of White-Tailed And Gunison's Prairie Dogs, Craig Knowles

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The status of the white-tailed and Gunnison's prairie dogs was investigated by conducting telephone interviews with agency people knowledgeable about these species within their area of jurisdiction. Available literature on prairie dog taxonomy, and life history and ecology was also reviewed. The white-tailed and Gunnison's prairie dogs are considered distinct species with no recognized subspecies. Both species are colonial, hibernate during the winter, and occur in shrub-grassland and grassland habitats in the Intermountain West. Density of white-tailed prairie dogs within colonies (2-5 prairie dogs per acre) is typically less than densities of Gunnison’s prairie dogs within colonies (5-10 prairie dogs …

Chrysomela Scripta, Plagiodera Versicolora (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), And Trichoplusia Ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Track Specific Leaf Developmental Stages, D.A. Wait, J.S. Coleman, C.G. Jones Oct 2002

Chrysomela Scripta, Plagiodera Versicolora (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), And Trichoplusia Ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Track Specific Leaf Developmental Stages, D.A. Wait, J.S. Coleman, C.G. Jones

Aspen Bibliography

It is well recognized that host-specialized folivores prefer to feed on young in comparison to old leaves. However, the capacity of young leaf feeders to track specific leaf developmental stages has not been clearly demonstrated. Using three insect folivores and two plant species, we show that nitrogen (N) fertilization changes leaf development and that herbivores track these changes in leaf development. Nicotiana tabacum L. and Populus deltoides Bartram were fertilized at two and three rates of N addition, respectively. Plants with high rates of N supply had faster growth, greater leaf area, and faster leaf initiation rates than plants receiving …

Designing A Low Water Use Landscape, Teresa Cerny, Kelly L. Kopp, Maggie Wolf, Debbie Amundsen

A landscape design should meet the needs of the people who will use and maintain the area while incorporating the site’s existing environmental conditions into the design. Water is a limiting resource in Utah, so designing the landscape to efficiently use water is important. Conserving water in the landscape can be accomplished by selecting low water use plants, designing and scheduling irrigation systems efficiently, grouping plants according to their water requirements, and using hardscaping materials (patios, stone paths, decks, etc.) appropriately to reduce the area requiring irrigation.

PRESERVATION OF BATKOA SP. AND FURIA SP. (ENTOMOPHTHORALES )DRY MYCELIUM WITH COMBINATIONS OF DESICCANTS AND OXYGEN REDUCERS. Formulation is the most difficult part of Entomophthorales development as biopesticides and bioacaricides, and has caused difficulty in evaluating the Batkoa sp. and Furia sp. for the control of the cercopids Mahanarva fimbriolata and Deois schach, pests of sugar-cane and pastures. A technique for producing dry mycelium of Entomophthorales was previously developed to allow for field use of these fungi, but pathogen preservation (shelf life) was not satisfactory. Due to these difficulties, the research reported here aimed to evaluate the effect of combinations …

Occurrence Of Entomophthorales On Spittlebugs Pests Of Pasture In Eastern São Paulo State, Brazil, Luis G. Leite, Sérgio B. Alves, H. M. Takada, Antonio Batista Filho, Donald W. Roberts

Biology Faculty Publications

Spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) are the most important pests of pasture in Brazil. Nymphal behavior, i.e. residing in the soil, makes their control with insecticides difficult. Although Entomophthorales fungi occasionally have been found at epizootic levels in spittlebug populations, they have not been cultured, had their incidence levels determined, nor evaluated for pest control potential. The research reported here aimed to evaluate the occurrence of Entomophthorales species on spittlebug pests of pasture in Pindamonhangaba County, São Paulo State, Brazil. Evaluations were carried out in 2 adjacent fields with Brachiaria decumbens and Pennisetum purpureum grasses, respectively, of 5 ha each. Evaluations were …
