P-Protein Structure In Functional And Non-Functional Secondary Phloem In Armeniaca Vulgaris Lam. (Rosaceae), Gönül Algan, H. Nurhan Bakar Büyükkartal

Turkish Journal of Botany

P-proteins (phloem proteins) and their conformational changes in the functional and non-functional sieve elements in secondary phloem of Armeniaca vulgaris Lam. (Rosaceae) were examined with an electron microscope. Scattered throughout the cell, the fibrillar components of p-protein in active sieve elements were much denser sieve plate surfaces. P-proteins in inactive sieve elements, different from those of active ones, were observed to appear as disordered, short, thread-like fibrils with fern-like crystalline structure.

Influence Of The Inorganic Carbon Addition On Photosynthesis Of Algae And Some Macrophytes, Meri̇ç Albay, Jan Pokorny

Turkish Journal of Botany

A two-step experiment was conducted in order to understand whether natural algal communities (fish-pond water) and selected macrophytes (Potamogeton pectinatus L. Elodea nuttallii (Planch.). St.John. and Utricularia L. sp.) + algae were limited by lack of inorganic carbon (IC). First, 0.6 ml 1 M KHCO_3- was added to the water of Vajgar and Ratmirovsky ponds, South Bohemia, and incubated for 180 minutes under 125 µE m^{-2} s^{-1} light. Then light intensity was increased to 150 µE m^{-2} s^{-1} and 0.6 ml 1 M KHCO_3- was added to selected macrophytes + Vajgar pond waters and incubated for 50 and 180 minutes. …

Establishment Of Cell Suspension Cultures And Plant Regeneration In Sugar Beet (Beta Vulgaris L.), Songül Gürel, Ekrem Gürel, Zeki̇ Kaya

Turkish Journal of Botany

The establishment of cell suspension culture from the callus of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) breeding lines and plant regeneration from suspension-derived callus are described in this study. Using different concentrations and combinations of BAP and 2,4-D, the growth patterns of cell suspension cultures were examined during a range of culture periods (0, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 days). In all lines, the growth rates of cells were initially slow but as the culture proceeded, they increased significantly and accumulated great amounts of biomass over a period of 15 days. Medium containing high BAP (0.25 mg/l) and …

Effect Of Indole-3-Butyric Acid On In Vitro Root Development In Lentil (Lens Culinaris Medik.), Khalid Mahmood Khawar, Sebahatti̇n Özcan

Turkish Journal of Botany

Lentil is an important crop of the family Leguminosae and is notoriously recalcitrant to rooting in vitro. Shoots of cultivar \"Ali Dayı\" of lentil obtained after culturing seeds for 10 days on MS medium were isolated and rooted on MS medium containing indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/l. The primary response was obtained after 4 weeks; 0.25 mg/l IBA gave the best results, with a rooting percentage of 25%, mean number of 7.87 roots along with mean root length of 7.13 cm. However, all other concentrations of IBA failed to induce roots.

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, the levels of endogenous free, bound and total auxin (Indole-3-acetic acid, IAA), gibberellic acid (GA_3), abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin (zeatin) were examined in some species of mosses and lichens. For determination of the levels of these plant growth regulators, spectrophotometry was used. Our findings show that the mosses and lichens used in this study produce the plant growth regulators IAA, GA_3, ABA and zeatin.

Seasonal Variations In The Biomass Of Macro-Algal Communities From The Gulf Of Antalya (North-Eastern Mediterranean), İsmai̇l İbrahi̇m Turna, Ö. Osman Ertan, Mario Cormaci, Giovanni Furnari

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, the seasonal variations in the macro-algal biomass in the Gulf of Antalya (north-eastern Mediterranean) were investigated. The seasonal variations of the macro-algal biomass were found to be related to the biology of the abundant species during less favourable seasons. These variations occurred usually as a result of a significant reduction in algal density [Padina pavonica (L.) J.V.Lamour., Dasycladus vermicularis (Scopoli) Krasser, Chondrophycus papillosus (C.Agardh) Garbay & Harper] or loss of major part of their thallus [Cystoseira spp., Liagora distenta (Mertens ex Roth) J.V.Lamour., Liagora viscida (Forssk.) C.Agardh]. The highest values of biomass were found to be in …

\Alpha -Difluoromethylornithine Inhibits The Growth Of Fungus Macrophomina Phaseoli, Narçin Palavan Ünsal, Ayşin Çotuk, Yeşi̇m Kalaç Martini

Turkish Journal of Botany

\alpha -Difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), a specific enzyme activated inhibitor of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of the fungus Macrophomina phaseoli (Tassi) Goidanich. Putrescine (Put), when added to the nutrient medium at a concentration of 0.25 mM, decreased the inhibitory effect of DFMO. These results suggest that polyamines (PAs) are essential for the growth of fungi and that DFMO is applicable to the alleviation or prevention of crop losses due to phytopathogenic fungi.

Turkish Journal of Botany

Seasonal changes in selected chemical, ecological and morphological characteristics of Flabellia petiolata (Turra) Nizam. and Halimeda tuna (Ellis & Sol.) J.V.Lamour., which are commonly found in the Gulf of Antalya, were studied. Crude protein content of F. petiolata was found to be higher than that of H. tuna, whereas the crude fat contents of the two species were similar. On the other hand, compared to F. petiolata, H. tuna was rich in inorganic material. Both species were observed to be dense on a seasonal basis in the sampling area and they reached their maximum length during summer.

The pollen grains in the genus examined are all 3-zonocolpate. The pollen is suboblate, oblate-spheroidal, prolate-spheroidal and prolate. The nexine is thinner than the sexine and the tectum is distinctly perforated in all species. The pollen grains show variation within the genus in polar and equatorial axes, colpus length and shape. These variations sometimes …

Age Mediated Effects On The Alternative Respiratory Pathway In Leaves Of Rhodiola Rosea And Ajuga Reptans, Natalia V. Pystina, Roman A. Danilov Jan 2002

Age Mediated Effects On The Alternative Respiratory Pathway In Leaves Of Rhodiola Rosea And Ajuga Reptans, Natalia V. Pystina, Roman A. Danilov

Turkish Journal of Botany

The influence of aging processes on respiration and the ratio of respiratory pathways in the leaves of Rhodiola rosea L. and Ajuga reptans L. under natural conditions was investigated. Young leaves had a higher respiration rate and higher activity of the alternative respiratory pathway than did mature leaves. The capacity of the alternative respiratory pathway did not show significant differences between the young and mature leaves of R. rosea and increased in the mature leaves of A. reptans (from 60% up to 88%). This fact may be explained by the higher requirements of growing tissues for metabolites. In this case, …
