Scanning Electron Microscopy, Histological, And Tissue Culture Studies Of Powdery Mildews Infecting Dogwoods, Leigh Ann Klein Dec 1997

Scanning Electron Microscopy, Histological, And Tissue Culture Studies Of Powdery Mildews Infecting Dogwoods, Leigh Ann Klein

Masters Theses

Powdery mildew has become a common and widespread foliar disease of dogwoods. Microsphaera pulchra Cooke and Peck, and Phyllactinia guttata (Wallr.: Fr.) Lev. are two causal agents of powdery mildew on dogwood species in eastern North America. A clear understanding of the host-pathogen relationship between these fungi and their host must be obtained to advance research in disease management and resistance breeding.

A necessary step in studying a disease is to identify the causal agent. Leaves of C. florida 'Cherokee Sunset' and C. amomum (silky dogwood) were observed under a compound microscope to determine causal agents of powdery mildew based …

The Vascular Flora Of The Upper Clinch River In Claiborne, Grainger, And Hancock Counties, Tennessee, Bobby Christopher Bullington Aug 1997

The Vascular Flora Of The Upper Clinch River In Claiborne, Grainger, And Hancock Counties, Tennessee, Bobby Christopher Bullington

Masters Theses

The vascular flora along a portion of the Upper Clinch River (UCR) in Claiborne, Grainger, and Hancock Counties, Tennessee was inventoried for two full growing seasons in 1994 and 1995. A total of 526 species and lesser taxa in 108 families and 338 genera were documented. Three hundred and twenty-six taxa were determined to be county records. Six taxa are state listed as threatened or special concern species in Tennessee.

Distributions of the taxa indicate a strong northern extraneous influence on the flora. However, intraneous elements still represent the single largest category. Northern taxa comprise almost 52% of the total …

Celluloid Blackness : Race, Modernity, And The Conflicted Roots Of American Cinema (1915-1939), Lincoln Farr

Honors Theses

Introduction: "The Problem of the Twentieth Century" In a full page interview in the New York Times on May 29, 1912, the Swiss psychiatrist Dr. Carl G. Jung told the American people, "It seems to me that you are about to discover yourselves. You have discovered everything else-all the land of this continent; all the resources, all the hidden things of nature."Jung used the interview to address the American people, at a moment which he somehow recognized as crucial in the development of human civilization. America, the "tragic" country which he struggled to comprehend, would soon become the harbinger of …

Identification Of Belowground Woody Structures Using Molecular Biomarkers, Benny R. Bobowski May 1997

Identification Of Belowground Woody Structures Using Molecular Biomarkers, Benny R. Bobowski

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Within the last two decades substantial progress has been made in understanding seed bank dynamics and the contribution of the soil seed bank to a post-disturbance plant community. There has been relatively little progress, however, in understanding perennial bud bank dynamics and the contribution of the soil bud bank to secondary succession. This lack of information is due primarily to the inability to reliably identify roots, rhizomes, and lignotubers that lie dormant beneath the soil surface. This scientific investigation, therefore, addressed the issue of identification of belowground woody structures.

The first objective was to develop a methodology that utilizes molecular …

Development Of Super-Dwarf Wheat Under Stress Conditions Simulating Those On The Space Station Mir, Liming Jiang May 1997

Development Of Super-Dwarf Wheat Under Stress Conditions Simulating Those On The Space Station Mir, Liming Jiang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Super-Dwarf wheat plants were grown in simulation growth chambers under 12 treatments with three photoperiods (18 h, 21 h, 24 h) and four carbon-dioxide levels (360, 1200, 3000, and 7000 μmol/mol). Carbon-dioxide concentrations affected flower initiation rates of Super-Dwarf wheat. The optimum CO2 level for flower initiation and development was 1200 μmol•mol-1. Super-optimum CO2 levels delayed flower initiation, but did not decrease final flower bud number per head. Longer photoperiods not only accelerated flower initiation rates, but also decreased deleterious effects of super-optimum C02. Flower bud size and head length at the same developmental …

The Effects Of Organic Matter Rich Topsoil On The Germination Growth And Metal Uptake Of Corn (Zea Mays) Grown In Flue Dust Contaminated Soil, Christopher Allen Impellitteri

OES Theses and Dissertations

The large biomass of corn (Zea mays) and promising results from a previous experiment (Chlopecka and Adriano, 1995) concerning metal uptake by corn indicate that corn may be a good candidate for phytoremediation of trace metal contaminated soil. Appling soil (acid, thermic, typic paleudult) was treated with increasing levels of a metal rich flue dust based on Zn concentration (0, 150, 300, 600, 1200, and 2400 mg/kg). Four replicates at each Zn treatment level were either limed to pH 6.3-6.5 and covered with a two inch thick layer of organic matter rich topsoil (OM), unlimed and covered with …

A Comparative Study Of The Benthic Population In Weir Ponds Draining Watersheds Of The Fernow Experimental Forest, Parsons, West Virginia, Kevin Dwayne Brittingham

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A study of the benthos of weir ponds draining watersheds of the Fernow Experimental Forest (FEF) was conducted in 1994-1995. The objectives of this study were: (1) to relate differences in weir pond faunas to watershed treatments on the FEF, and (2) to compare current weir pond faunas to those described in 1973 by Steve Harris. In 1971-1972, there were fewer invertebrates but greater taxa richness than in 1994-1995. Total density varied among weir pond and between studies with numbers in the 1971- 1972 study ranging from 26,168 to 79,259 individuals collected, while numbers in the 1994-1995 study raged from …

Macrophyte-Macroinvertebrate Interactions In A Lentic Ecosystem And The Effect Of Fluridone Treatment To Control Myriophyllum Spicatum L., Gregory J. Moeller

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Myriophyllum spicatum L. is an exotic macrophyte that can become pestiferous in lentic ecosystems. Two field studies were conducted to investigate: 1) epiphytic macroinvertebrates associated with M. spicatum and native macrophytes; and 2) epiphytic macroinvertebrate community response to fluridone treatment for M. spicatum control.

In the first study evaluating epiphytic macroinvertebrates associated with M. spicatum and native macrophytes, triplicate samples were collected at three sites in both Auburn and Zumbra Lakes, Minnesota, USA. One site in each lake contained primarily M. spicatum, the second site contained M. spicatum and native vegetation, and the third site was dominated by native …

Tests On The Elaboration Of Soybean Milk, Derivatives, And Industrial Feasibility Project, Ciro Pablo Kopp Valdivia

Theses and Dissertations

This work was done with the purpose of evaluating different forms of soybean milk processing, the product acceptance by the public, and to do a study on the feasibility for the production of milk at a small scale to be used as a nutritional supplement in school breakfasts. The soybean milk was prepared with 2 varieties "(Cristalina and Doko)" and two periods of enzymatic inactivation (Before and After) of the grain mush. The "organoleptic" quality was evaluated through surveys and its posterior statistical analysis. Parameter quality was also considered just as did the microbiologic analysis and the conservation tests. The …

Environmental Requirements For Sporocarp Germination In Marsileaceae, Kevin J. Kruep Jan 1997

Environmental Requirements For Sporocarp Germination In Marsileaceae, Kevin J. Kruep

Masters Theses

Experiments were conducted on sporocarps of Marsilea quadrifolia L. to determine whether temperature had any influence on the length of the reproductive period and initial sperm emergence from microgametophytes. Data were then compared to results of similar studies undertaken with the species M. vestita Hooker and Greville to determine whether there was any variation between them. A slight variation was recorded, ranging from 1 to 1.5 hours for initial emergence.

An additional set of experiments was performed with 58 year old sporocarps and approximately two-year-old sporocarps of M. quadrifolia. A difference of 2-6.5 hours for initial sperm emergence occurred between …

A Study Of The Lichens At Rocky Branch Nature Preserve, Clark County, Illinois, Eric B. Grunder

Masters Theses

In 1971, a graduate student at Eastern Illinois University, James E. Wiedman, studied the lichen flora of Rocky Branch Nature Preserve, Clark County, Illinois. During his study he collected, identified, and recorded a total of 64 lichen species. Since 1971, Rocky Branch Nature Preserve has experienced a dramatic increase in use by people and a concomittant decline in the quality of lichen habitats. In order to assess the decline of suitable lichen habitats and the reduction of lichen species a second study of the lichens at Rocky Branch Nature Preserve was undertaken. As part of this study, ten habitat sites …

Comparative Salt And Waterlogging Tolerance Of An Introduced Grass (Agropyron Elongatum [Host] P. Beauv.) And Two Herbaceous Australian Species (Podolepis Gracilis [Lehm.] And Danthonia Caespitosa Gaud.), Bryan William Duff Jan 1997

Comparative Salt And Waterlogging Tolerance Of An Introduced Grass (Agropyron Elongatum [Host] P. Beauv.) And Two Herbaceous Australian Species (Podolepis Gracilis [Lehm.] And Danthonia Caespitosa Gaud.), Bryan William Duff

Theses : Honours

Increasing land degradation is recognised as an immediate worldwide threat. Human induced soil salinity is probably the major cause of land abandonment, through its adverse effects on plant growth. Salinity is a major focus of environmental researchers because it is recognised that counter-strategies can potentially reclaim both artificially degraded lands and intrinsically saline areas. Currently, strategies to combat salinity require that land use is changed, since restoration to a past use is usually economically impractical or impossible. Biological strategies show most promise. Revegetation of degraded soils with hardy plant species has met with considerable success, and shows promise for the …

Biological Species Concepts In Eastern North American Populations Of Lentinellus Ursinus, Andrew N. Miller Jan 1997

Biological Species Concepts In Eastern North American Populations Of Lentinellus Ursinus, Andrew N. Miller

Masters Theses

As part of a biosystematic study of the Lentinellus ursinus species complex, field and herbarium specimens from North America, Central America, and Europe were examined. Single basidiospore isolates from basidiomata collected in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Costa Rica, and Austria were crossed in all possible combinations to determine the mating system operating in each population. All populations exhibited bifactorial or tetrapolar mating systems. Tester strains were then crossed to identify intercompatible populations and to determine if morphological species in the L. ursinus species complex are congruent with biological species. Three biological species were recognized …
