Fishery Independent Standing Stock Surveys Of Oyster Populations In Virginia 1995, Roger L. Mann, James Wesson Oct 1995

Fishery Independent Standing Stock Surveys Of Oyster Populations In Virginia 1995, Roger L. Mann, James Wesson

Reports

Extensive description of the Virginia oyster resource and history of its utilization has been given by Haven, Hargis and Kendall (1981), and more recently reviewed by Hargis and Haven (1988). These contributions, among many others, describe a state of continuing decline. The James River, Virginia has served as the focal point for the Virginia oyster industry for over a century, being the source of the majority of seed oysters that were transplanted for grow-out to locations within the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay and much further afield in the Middle Atlantic states (Haven et al, 1981 ). The Rappahannock …

Estimation Of Relative Abundance Of Recreationally Important Finfish In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay: Annual Progress Report 1994-1995, Patrick J. Geer, Herbert M. Austin, David N. Hata

Reports

Annual indices of juvenile abundance have been generated from trawl survey data for several species of key recreational importance in the Virginia portion of Chesapeake Bay (spot, croaker, weakfish, summer flounder, black sea bass and striped bass, white and channel catfish) and four species of secondary importance (scup, white perch, northern puffer, and silver perch) for the period 1988-1995. No species has shown a continuous trend during the seven year period, although several species have revealed declines (spot, scup y-o-y white perch, northern puffer) or increases (Atlantic croaker and striped bass) in recent years. Spot has shown the largest decline …

Juvenile Finfish And Blue Crab Stock Assessment Program Bottom Trawl Survey Annual Data Summary Report Series Volume 1994, Michael F. Land, Patrick J. Geer, Christopher F. Bonzek, Herbert M. Austin

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has conducted a trawl survey dating back to 1955. Over these forty years methods and objectives have varied according to funding sources and state and/or federal mandates. The present thrust of the program is to provide juvenile indices of relative abundance for recreationally, commercially, and ecologically important finfish and invertebrates. These measures of juvenile abundance are widely used as a key element in the management of the Atlantic States' coastal fishery resources. Estimates of juveniles (age-0) have proven to be a reliable and early indicator of future year-class strength. A review of previously …

Disease Processes And Transmission Dynamics Of Perkinsus Marinus In American Oysters (Crassostrea Virginia), Fu-Lin E. Chu Jan 1995

Disease Processes And Transmission Dynamics Of Perkinsus Marinus In American Oysters (Crassostrea Virginia), Fu-Lin E. Chu

Reports

The once thriving oyster industry in the Chesapeake Bay and east coast of the United States, has been threatened by overfishing, and diseases caused by two protistan parasites, Haplosporidium nelsoni (MSX) and Perkinsus marinus (Dermo). Three lifestages are recognized in the lifecycle of P. marinus, meronts (trophozoites), prezoosporangia, and the biflagellated zoospores. The effects of the diseases caused by the two protists have been well documented (Andrews 1988, Barber et. al. 1988, Ford 1988, Ford and Figueras 1988, Chu et al 1993, Chu and LaPeyre 1993a, 1993b, Paynter and Burreson 1991). Since 1986, P. marinus has reportedly caused greater oyster …

Monitoring Juvenile Fishes In The Surf-Zone Of Virginia, And Development Of A Juvenile Bluefish Young-Of-The-Year Index In Virginia : 1994 Sampling Season, Donald M. Seaver, Herbert M. Austin

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science has conducted a monitoring program of the juvenile finfish in the Chesapeake Bay tributary rivers of Virginia since 1955, the striped bass spawning rivers since 1967 and the main stem Chesapeake Bay since 1988. These data are used to develop juvenile indices for several recreationally important species including spot, croaker, summer flounder, weakfish, black seabass and striped bass. The indices are important as both an index of recruitment success and effectiveness of management actions and are used in interstate Fishery Management Plans (FMP's) by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and the Chesapeake …

Filtration By Oysters : Interactive Effects Of Water Flow, Seston Composition And Filtration Rate, Mark W. Luckenbach, Deborah A. Harsh, Roger L. Mann, R J. Orth, Ken Moore

Reports

Filtration by suspension-feeding bivalves affects water quality and the postulated impacts include increased light penetration and enhanced benthic primary production. Such system-level predictions are extrapolated fiom still water experiments which neglect the effects of flow, seston composition, turbulent mixing and refiltration by oysters within groups. Flume experiments were used to investigate the effects of varying flow speed and seston composition on filtration capacity of oysters. Six groups of 90 oysters were used in treatments which varied concentrations of the algae Ekalassiosira weisj70grgrsie parately and in combination with inorganics; four sets of shell only controls were used to evaluate hydrodynamic effects. …

Field Studies In The Lynnhaven River For Calibration Of A Tidal Prism Water Quality Model, Kyeong Park, Albert Y. Kuo, Arthur J. Butt

Reports

Under the Virginia Coastal Resources Management Program Grants (VCRMPG) for FY '93, a tidal prism water quality model has been developed for small coastal basins and tidal creeks. The rationale of the model development is provided and the model is described in detail in Kuo & Park ( 1994). The tidal prism model uses the concept of tidal flushing for physical transport processes. The nutrient and phytoplankton kinetics are mostly from the Chesapeake Bay three-dimensional water quality model (Cereo & Cole 1994), and the model also includes the sediment process model of the main Bay (DiToro & Fitzpatrick 1993). The …

Estimation Of Juvenile Striped Bass Relative Abundance In The Virginia Portion Of Chesapeake Bay, January 1994-December 1994 : Annual Progress Report, Herbert M. Austin, A. Dean Estes, Donald M. Seaver

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has conducted a juvenile striped bass seine survey from 1967 through 1973 and from 1980 through the present. The primary objective has been the monitoring of the relative annual recruitment success of juvenile striped bass in the spawning and nursery areas of Lower Chesapeake Bay. The survey was funded in it's initial period by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and then reinstated in 1980 with funding from the National Marine Fisheries Service under the Emergency Striped Bass Study program. Commencing with the 1988 annual survey, support of the program has been made …

Manual For Handling And Shedding Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus), Michael J. Oesterling

Reports

This manual is intended to present a practical approach to constructing and operating a Chesapeake Bay crab shedding facility. Included are portions of an earlier VIMS publication by Paul A. Haefner, Jr. and David Garten (1974), "Methods of handling and shedding blue crabs, (Callinectes sapidus)," as well as a compilation of other scientific and industry experiences. Techniques described may not apply to all situations; in many cases general recommendations are made. Additionally, descriptions of various facility designs refer mainly to those in use in Chesapeake Bay; other areas of the country may use varying, but similar designs. Although the information …
