Reports

The research reported herein (and in the 1982 through 1989 annual reports) is directly related to Priority III stated in the "Action Plan" (p. 15) of the Emergency Striped Bass Study (Anadromous Fish Conservation Act Amendment, Public Law 96-118). The amendment was the result of a decline in striped bass (Marone saxatilis) landings from Maine to North Carolina since the mid-1970' s. This report summarizes the results of the spring 1991 sampling period and compares the catchability of a multi-sized mesh anchor gill net with that of a pound net.

We undertook an acoustic survey of a limited area of the nearshore between the Virginia Department of Transportation Jamestown-Scotland Wharf Ferry Pier and Church Point along the north east shore of Jamestown Island (Figure 1). The project involved operating a sea-floor mapping system and a sub-bottom profiling system in shallow water. The surveys were performed on March 20 and 21, 1991, utilizing one of the Institute's 28 foot long, outboard workboats.
