Kolmogorov Inertial Range For Inhomogeneous Turbulent Flows, Bruce Knight, Lawrence Sirovich
Kolmogorov Inertial Range For Inhomogeneous Turbulent Flows, Bruce Knight, Lawrence Sirovich
Knight Laboratory
The Kolmogorov argument for the existence of an inertial range is reexamined in situations for which neither Fourier modes nor homogeneity and local isotropy are natural assumptions. Scaling arguments are shown which are still valid, and generalizations to the -5/3 law are given for the eigenvalue spectrum of the two-point velocity-correlation matrix. Results from several different numerical simulations are presented. Data derived from simulations of channel and convection flows show that a sensible inertial range appears at very modest Reynolds numbers.
Signal Transduction And Transcriptional Regulation In The Response To Type I Interferon, Daniel Solomon Kessler
Signal Transduction And Transcriptional Regulation In The Response To Type I Interferon, Daniel Solomon Kessler
Student Theses and Dissertations
The interaction of type I interferon (IFN) with a specific cell surface receptor elicits a number of physiological changes, including the attainment of a state in which viral replication and cellular proliferation is inhibited. The response to IFN is mediated by a group of IPN-induced proteins which are regulated at the transcriptional level. Therefore, a central event in the cellular response to IFN is the coordinate transcriptional induction of a specific set of interferon stimulated genes (ISGs). In this thesis, I have addressed the cellular strategies employed to transmit specific cell surface signals across compartmental boundaries, ultimately resulting in specific …
Modulation Of Signal Transduction In The Nervous System By Protein Phosphorylation, Jessica F. Hopfield
Modulation Of Signal Transduction In The Nervous System By Protein Phosphorylation, Jessica F. Hopfield
Student Theses and Dissertations
Signal transduction, the process by which an extracellular signal is translated into an intracellular message, underlies all brain function. This thesis examines the role of protein phosphorylation in mediating three different molecular mechanisms by which neurotransmitter receptors transduce their signals: chemically-gated ion channels, receptor-linked ion channels and receptor-linked ion pumps. The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, a neurotransmitter-gated ion channel, is phosphorylated by a protein tyrosine kinase in postsynaptic membranes in vitro and in vivo. Purified nicotinic receptor molecules from Torpedo electroplaques can be phosphorylated to known stoichiometries and reconstituted into lipid vesicles. Tyrosine phosphorylation increases the rate of the rapid phase …
Albumin Transcriptional Regulation, Roy Steven Herbst
Albumin Transcriptional Regulation, Roy Steven Herbst
Student Theses and Dissertations
An analysis is presented of the molecular mechanisms involved in maintaining the liver specific transcriptional profile of the rat and mouse serum albumin genes. Using DNA transfection and recombinant viral infection, the minimal rat promoter and mouse enhancer elements were identified, functionally dissected and shown independently to be hepatocyte specific elements. Based on these studies, multiple cis-acting DNA regulatory regions were elucidated and the cognate proteins which interact with them characterized and where possible their identity determined. It was found that the promoter proximal -156 nucleotides of the rat albumin gene were necessary and sufficient to insure albumin transcriptional specificity. …
