Effect Of Cold Acclimation On Cold Tolerance Of Laboratory-Reared Diapausing Pink Bollworms, Robert J. Wright, H. M. Graham Oct 1978

Effect Of Cold Acclimation On Cold Tolerance Of Laboratory-Reared Diapausing Pink Bollworms, Robert J. Wright, H. M. Graham

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Cold acclimation and cold tolerance were studied in laboratory-reared diapausing pink bollworms, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), conditioned at 5°, 10°, and 15° C for 2,4, and 8 wk. Larval mortality, abnormal pupation and total mortality from 2-h exposure to sub-zero temperatures increased similarly as the temperature decreased from _6° to -15° C. Exposure to -9° C and above had little effect. The effect of cold conditioning on cold tolerance was most important at the _12° C exposure. Conditioning at 5°, 10°, and 15° C reduced total mortality after exposure to _12° C, compared to unconditioned larvae. Conditioning of larvae at 10° …

Residues Of Carbofuran Applied As A Systemic Insecticide In Irrigated Wetland Rice: Implications For Insect Control, J. N. Seiber, Elvis A. Heinrichs, G. B. Aquino, S. L. Valencia, P. Andrade, A. M. Argente May 1978

Residues Of Carbofuran Applied As A Systemic Insecticide In Irrigated Wetland Rice: Implications For Insect Control, J. N. Seiber, Elvis A. Heinrichs, G. B. Aquino, S. L. Valencia, P. Andrade, A. M. Argente

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The behavior of carbofuran residues in rice plants treated by broadcast, soil incorporation, and root-zone application, and by seedling root-soak and root-coat technique was studied. Placement of insecticide in gelatin capsules in the root zone gave good persistence (about 60 days) and leaf residue (as much as 45 ppm at 10 days after treatment). Among the methods tested it also controlled early season pests best and gave the highest grain yields. Soil incorporation and root-zone placement with a liquid-band applicator was also more efficient than paddy-water broadcast in getting insecticide to the plant; soil incorporation provided slightly longer persistence (60 days) …

Specificity Of The Trail Pheromones Of Four Species Of Fire Ants, D. P. Jouvenaz, C. S. Lofgren, D. A. Carlson, W. A. Banks

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

The species specificity of trail pheromones of fire ants, Solenopsis spp., has been studied by Wilson (1962; Anim. Behav. 10: 137-47) and Barlin, Blum, and Brand (1976; J, Insect Physiol. 22: 839-44). Our study, stimulated by taxonomic advances since Wilson's work and conducted concurrently with that of Barlin et al., is presented here to confirm and supplement the latters' observations, and to report some differences in results.

Controle De Anticarsia Gemmatalis Hübner, 1818 (Lepidoptera- Noctuidae) Com Ph 6040 Em Baixas Dosagens, E. A. Heinrichs, R. F. Pires Da Silva

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Assessment of soybean seed quality in relation to the damage caused by Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood, 1837) (Hemiptera, Pentatornidae) at various infestation levels and at diferent stages of soybean development (Glycine max (L.) Merrill). Stinkbug effect on soybean seed quality was studied. Field tests were carried out in Guaiba, Rio Grande do Sul, 1974/75. Soybean plants were artificially infested at various densities of Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood, 1837) per 0.5m of row and at different stages of soybean development by means of isolation cages. Stinkbug infestations restricted from full bloom up to the beginning of pod formation do not result in …

Foliar retention in soybean (Glyaine max (L.) Merril) as effected by levels and period of infestation with Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood, 1837) (Herniptera, Pentatornidae)

The effect of stinkbug on foliar retention in soybean was studied. Field tests were carried out in Guaiba, Rio Grande do Sul, 1974/75. Soybean plants were artificially infested at various densities of Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood, 1837), per 0,5m of row and at different stages of soybean development by means of isolation cages. Foliar retention occurred when plants were infested continuosly, from full to the complete physiological maturity of the seed. This phenomenon was not observed when infestations …

Sex Pheromone Of The Tsetse Fly: Isolation, Identification, And Synthesis Of Contact Aphrodisiacs, D. A. Carlson, P. A. Langley, P. Huyton

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Sex pheromones isolated from the cuticle of the female tsetse fly, Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood, release mating behavior in the malefly at ultra- short range or upon contact with baited decoys. Three active components were iden- tified as 15,19-dimethylheptatriacontane, 17,21-dimethylheptatriacontane, and 15,19,23-trimethylheptatriacontane. Chemical and biological comparisons show that the natural and synthetic compounds are identical.

Genetic Method For The Preferential Elimination Of Females Of Anopheles Albimanus, J. A. Seawright, P. E. Kaiser, D. A. Dame, C. S. Lofgren

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Recent field experiments demonstrated the possibility of using the sterile male method for the control of Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann, the most impor- tant vector of human malaria in Central America. Until now there was no practical method for excluding females from the releases of sterile males. A genetic method was developed for the preferential elimination of females during any of the four life stages. This genetic sexing system utilizes propoxur (o-isopropoxyphenyl methyl- carbamate) susceptibility as a recessive conditional lethal, a T(Y:2R) translocation, and an In(2R) inversion. The propoxur resistance allele (dominant) was linked to the Y chromosome via a radiation-induced …
