The uptake, distribution and depuration of a water soluble, mono-aromatic hydrocarbon contained in petroleum and refined products was studied in two species of marine fish, Nature northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) and juvenile striped bass (Horone saxatilis) were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of 14c benzene for 48 hours. Residues in tissues exhibiting a high lipid content (non-metabolic pathway) or representing apparent major metabolic sites were measured during the exposure and afterwards when the fish were transferred to clean seawater. Fish exhibited a rapid uptake over a wide range of benzene concentrations in the water column. Accumulation in anchovy was considerably …

Since all chemical and electrical input into the cell / occurs via its plasma membrane, many pharmacological agents and hormones initiate their effects by interacting with receptor sites on the plasma membrane or by passing through the cell membrane and interacting with other membranes within the cell. Generally, the precise mechanisms by which these events occur remain relatively unclear. It was thought for many years that the cell membrane was a relatively static structure which allowed molecules to enter the cell at a rate dependent upon their degree of lipid solubility. Reproductive Ecology And Population Dynamics Of Two Sympatric Species Of Macoma (Bivalvia), John Gibson Rae Iii

Populations of the sympatric intertidal bivalves, Macoma secta and M. nasuta are compared as to reproductive ecology and population dynamics. Histological examination of seasonal gonadal changes indicate that both species undergo dormancy in the winter months and rapid gamete proliferation in the spring. However, the timing of spawning differs. The M. secta population synchronously spawned in August while the M. nasuta population spawned lightly in late spring and more heavily in the fall. Fecundity estimates indicate M. nasuta adds 140% of winter weight in gametes and M. secta only adds 43% of winter weight in gametes. Spat fall was detected …

The genus Staphylococcus is a member of the family Micrococcaceae which includes three other general Micrococcus, Planococcus and Aerococcus. The four which have the same morphology and gram reaction may be distinguished from each other on the basis of arrangement, the utilization of glucose, the presence or abscence of cytochromes, oxygen requirements, motility and the G + C content of DNA. The main purpose of this work is to determine the characteristics of the thiourea carrier in human erythrocytes taking into consideration the two parameters of transfer (half-saturation constant and maximum transport rate) and the energy of dissociation of the carrier complex. In the president experiment, the problem has been approached by observing the exit of thiourea, from cells previously equilibrated with thiourea, into a saline medium containing different concentrations of thiourea. The most important advantages of this method are the rapidity of the exit process and the fact that it can be easily measured.

Population Ecology, Desiccation, And Food Resources With Respect To Angle Of Substrate For Two Limpets, Collisella (Acmaea) Digitalis And Collisella (Acmaea) Scabra, Linda Susan Collins

Two common limpets, Collis~ (Acmaea) digitalis and Collisella (Acmaea) scabra have overlapping distributions in the upper int.ertidal .spray zone. Haven (1971) found that Q. digitalis is more abundant on vertical surfaces while Q. scabra dominates horizontal surfaces. He assumed this preference to be due to differential abilities to withstand desiccation. In this study I report field work demonstrating a high correlation between the-ratio of abundance of Q. digitalis/ Q. scabra and angle of slope of substrate. Length (mm) of Q. scabra declines linearly with angle, but Q. digitalis shows no such trends. Results of laboratory measurements of angle of substrate …
