Growth Lines In Chione Fluctifraga And Prothaca Staminea (Bivalvia): Precision Of Counting And Comparisons Of Size, Age, Intertidal Location And Taxa, David M. Crabtree
Growth Lines In Chione Fluctifraga And Prothaca Staminea (Bivalvia): Precision Of Counting And Comparisons Of Size, Age, Intertidal Location And Taxa, David M. Crabtree
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Because formation of growth lines in the shells of bivalve molluscs is affected by environmental parameters, the growth lines should contain much information about the environments in which the animals live. However, the use of growth lines in ecology· and paleontology is limited by ambiguity in their identification.
Chione fluctifraga and Protothaca staminea were collected, marked, and replanted. C. fluctifraga were grown at three intertidal levels over a vertical range of one meter. In addition, P. staminea were grown at the middle level. All specimens were re-collected after 47 days. Acetate peels of shell cross sections were use for growth …
Nutrition Education For The Elderly, Laurie Manahan
Nutrition Education For The Elderly, Laurie Manahan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Abstract not included.
Introduction
This paper examines the topic of nutrition education for the elderly. Only within the past decade has proper nutrition been recognized as making a major contribution to the health and well-being of the elderly. This recognition of the importance of nutrition in the later years has led to the recent establishment of many nutrition programs for the elderly. As nutrition education is seen as an important tool in improving the nutritional status of the elderly, many of these now programs include nutrition education components.
Part One of this paper discusses the relationship between nutrition and aging. …
A Comparative Study Of Tree Structure And Composition Of A Mixed Coniferous Forest And Sequoia Groves In Sequoia National Park, California, Edwin L. Christiansen
A Comparative Study Of Tree Structure And Composition Of A Mixed Coniferous Forest And Sequoia Groves In Sequoia National Park, California, Edwin L. Christiansen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Forest structure in the giant sequoia grove and in the surrounding mixed coniferous forest is dominated by Abies concolor. The large basal area of Sequoiadendron giganteum is significant within the grove in terms of relative dominance but does not offset the density of Abies concolor which showed nearly identical importance values within and outside the giant sequoia groves.
Forest height and overstory density of the sequoia grove exceeded that of the mixed conifer forest.
Performance Appraisal In Hospital Dietary Departments, Mary C. Law
Performance Appraisal In Hospital Dietary Departments, Mary C. Law
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The specific objectives of this research were to (1) identify the principal characteristics and functions of performance appraisal programs utilized in hospital dietary departments, (2) determine the ten major factors in performance appraisal as indicated by the hospital dietary department directors as well as by dietetic interns and the factors indicated in the review of literature, and (3) develop an evaluation form for performance appraisal of hospital dietary department employees utilizing criteria obtained from (1) and (2).
Three hundred general, short term, nonprofit hospitals were included into the study. Questionnaires were mailed to three hospitals which were classified according to …
B And T Lymphocytes In Human Pregnancy, Ted Fong
B And T Lymphocytes In Human Pregnancy, Ted Fong
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The success of the fetus as a transplant has been attributed to an immune depression in the mother. It has not been shown whether this purported depression was due to fewer T-lymphocytes or a dysfunction of these cells. T cells were measured by the rosette technique using neuraminidase treated sheep red blood cells (SRBC). B cells were measured using a SRBC-hemolysin-guinea pig complement indicator system. The total leucocyte count in the pregnant group was significantly higher than the control group but this was not reflected in the absolute number of lymphocytes. Compared to non-pregnant women, the pregnant group did not …
The Effect Of Insulin, Fluoride And Methyl Xanthines On The Hypothalamic-Parotid Gland Endocrine Axis, Reagan Ondler
The Effect Of Insulin, Fluoride And Methyl Xanthines On The Hypothalamic-Parotid Gland Endocrine Axis, Reagan Ondler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of insulin and fluoride on dentinal fluid movement (FM) in high-sucrose fed rats as mediated through the hypothalamic-parotid gland endocrine axis. In conjunction with the fluoride study, the possible involvement of cAMP was examined through the use of several methyl xanthines which are recognized as phosphodiesterase inhibitors.
Twenty-one day old, male Sprague Dawley rats were maintained on a high-sugar diet (62% sucrose) for 8-9 days at which time intravenous or arterial infusions of insulin, fluoride or the methyl xanthines were performed. Additional procedures included collecting plasma from rats which had …
Comparison Of Laboratory Rhythms In Several Species And Genera Of Ants, Siu-Ming A. Soong
Comparison Of Laboratory Rhythms In Several Species And Genera Of Ants, Siu-Ming A. Soong
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Few simultaneous comparative studies of functional diversity have been made at the genus level. Four genera (Pogonomyrmex, Veromessor, Formica, Myrmecocystus) of ants were compared, two of them represented by two species each. Under controlled temperatures, in alternating light and dark, there was more difference in phase of rhythm among than within genera. This evidence adds to previous field evidence for a taxonomic explanation of such diversity in ants.
