The Effect Of Avitaminosis E On The Incorporation Of 35S-Sulfate By Rat Tissue Components, Sara Frierson Fulton
The Effect Of Avitaminosis E On The Incorporation Of 35S-Sulfate By Rat Tissue Components, Sara Frierson Fulton
Masters Theses
(Introduction) Previous work in this laboratory has shown that there is a decrease in sulfate production when 35S-cysteine is incubated with liver homogenates prepared from vitamin E-deficient rats as compared with the sulfate produced by homogenates from vitamin E-sufficient rats. In avitaminosis E the lowered incorporation of a test dose of 35SO4= into cellular lipoprotein and the mucopolysaccharides isolated from rib cartilage and lung has been shown. A decrease in the breaking strength of rats' aorta, presumably the result of impaired collagen production, was obtained when the aortas from vitamin E-deficient rats were compared …

A Growth Study On Phenylketonurics, Emma Johnson Aitken
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Data from forty-eight medical records of phenylketonuria children under treatment were investigated to determine if growth, as measured by stature, was normal; and to determine if the state of control or the age at beginning of treatment had an effect on growth. Mean intakes of phenylalanine, protein, and calories were obtained on the nutritional data only if the simultaneous serum phenylalanine was equal to or less than 6 milligrams per cent. These means were grouped according to the age of the children into 7 groups (0
The height at beginning of treatment and the last measured height was compared with …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A study comparing the 3- and 5-meal plans of food service, as used in long-stay geriatric units in San Bernardino County, have been compared. Three homes utilizing the 5-meal plan and three utilizing the 3-meal plan, to serve as controls, were chosen. A random sample of ten patients from each home was observed for three days to find the daily average nutrients in the foods served, eaten, and wasted. Also, interviews to compare factual information and attitudes were utilized for sample patients and personnel. The nutritional data was analyzed on the computer.
The results indicated that those on the 5-meal …

An Educational Study To Determine The Nutritional Value And Acceptability Of Dry Milk Among The Navajo, June C. Larson
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
One day at the Intermountain Indian School, when a package of government surplus dry milk seemed to defy opening, a senior Navajo student offered her assistance anx easily opened the many boxes of milk. Upon inquiry, she said that she had opened many a box, especially in the springtime. She went on to say that most of their dry milk was used in the spring to feed baby lambs.
Later this same student told how her baby sister had died during the winter from something. The sister just seemed to get sick and then died. Could her death have been …

(From the Introduction): The quest for the cause of pellagra which started in the early eighteenth century is surrounded with many fascinating theories. According to Harris (1)*, the many early theories advanced for the causation of pellagra may be classified into four groups: toxins, infections, food deficiencies of quantity and quality, and vitamin deficiencies. Maize consumption was associated with pellagra as early as 1735 by Casal but its relationship to the disease was not exactly understood at that time.
The first unreserved claim that pellagra results solely from the use of corn in the diet was made by …

More Sheep Per Acre, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
More Sheep Per Acre, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In the late 1950's agricultural scientists in Western Australia became convinced that much of the improved pasture in the agricultural areas of the State was going to waste.
The results of the early trials resulted in many farm demonstrations of higher carrying capacities on improved pastures in southern agricultural areas.

Good Management For The Springers Pays Dividends, J Y. Langdon
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
This article gives a striking example of the advantages of calving cows in good and rising condition—and explains why condition around calving time is so important.
ALTHOUGH most farmers know that cows calving in good and improving condition will give higher yields than those calving in poor condition, few use this knowledge to improve the production from their cows.

THE Chapman Valley embraces a relatively small area of country, following generally the course of the Chapman River.
The Chapman Valley proper extends from just north-east of Geraldton to Nanson, Nabawa and Naraling and includes on its fringes, areas of Narra Tarra, Moonyoonooka and areas west of Nabawa towards Northampton.
Continuous Grazing On Rose Clover At Northampton, R J. Parkin
Continuous Grazing On Rose Clover At Northampton, R J. Parkin
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
BECAUSE of its upright growth habit, it is often thought that rose clover may require some form of specialised grazing management.
It has also been said that the sheep find the plant and in particular the seed head, undesirable in the dry stages.
However, more recent observations refute this (Bailey 1966). The present commonly-grown strains of rose clover are later flowering generally than the medics or Geraldton subterranean clover and stay green later in the season.

Values Of Commonly-Used Protein Supplements In Broiler Rations, D F. Hessels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE performances of broiler flocks in the latter part of 1964 were below standard. Low body weights and a high incidence of gizzard erosion were common on farms.
It was therefore decided to test the biological valuss of the commonly-used protein supplements and also to try to find a correlation between gizzard erosion and any of the protein supplements.
Stocking Rates With Growing Cattle At Wokalup Research Station, Maurice C. Cullity
Stocking Rates With Growing Cattle At Wokalup Research Station, Maurice C. Cullity
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
CONSIDERABLE attention has been given in Australia and in overseas countries to methods of grazing control, and to the effects of varying stocking concentrations.
There is evidence that the highest yields per animal—of milk or butterfat per cow, or of weight increase per growing or fattening beast—are not necessarily a true reflection of the greatest output from the farm, as indicated by the measure of yield per acre.
Production-Line Calf Feeding, F J. Fielder, A. Hamilton
Production-Line Calf Feeding, F J. Fielder, A. Hamilton
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
MANY cream-producing dairy farmers have found that it can be profitable to increase the number of calves they rear. In fact, it is big business for those who can rear up to 200 calves a year, and a few have already achieved this number.

The Avondale Stocking Rate Experiment, L D. White, R. J. Lightfoot, R. N. Glencross
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THERE is now ample evidence that stocking rates well above the usual district levels can be carried in the Avon Valley.
However, many aspects of increasing stocking rates still require investigation, particularly with lambing ewes and young sheep.
Comparisons Of Broiler Rations, D F. Hessels
Comparisons Of Broiler Rations, D F. Hessels
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
PELLETS are the most profitable feed for broiler chickens—but when they contain about two-thirds cereal, does it pay a country grower to pay freight on pellets when cereals are plentiful in his district?
Skim Milk : Is A Valuable Pig Feed, But It Should Be Balanced By Other Foods, P Mcnamara, R. Sprivulis
Skim Milk : Is A Valuable Pig Feed, But It Should Be Balanced By Other Foods, P Mcnamara, R. Sprivulis
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
SKIM milk is a source of high quality protein, and as such is a valuable feed for young pigs.
Pigs will live and grow on skim milk alone, but it is not a balanced food. You will not get the best out of the milk or the pigs if the diet is not balanced by other foods.
