Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Evaluation of many records is the only way valid judgments can be made on abundance and status. The necessity of obtaining exact dates, localities, numbers, and special weather conditions cannot be overemphasized. For this reason, records in supplement to this list are freely solicited.

The present checklist includes all species and subspecies for which specimens exist. In some instances sight records have been adequate reason for including a species on the list when no specimen existed. Sight records for species which are difficult to identify have been admitted upon careful editing. The author has followed the policy outlined by Griscom …

Ecology Of The Sclerophyllous Plants Of Mount Tamalpais, George Edwin Corson Jr. Jan 1964

Ecology Of The Sclerophyllous Plants Of Mount Tamalpais, George Edwin Corson Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Mt. Tamalpais, 2571 feet in elevation, is found eighteen miles north of San Francisco in southern Marin County (see Plate 1). Despite its close proximity to a world port and metropolis, its slopes still display a wildness and natural beauty that have remained relatively unaltered as compared with other areas of the Bay Region and demonstrates ready accessibility to detailed ecological study.

The study began during the spring of 1963 when plant specimens were first collected. After a period of reconnaissance and mapping of the vegetation, quantitative samples were taken in the study area in hopes that relationships could be …

In August 1959 Pacific Marine Station (P.M.S.) located at Dillon Beach, began a program of oceanographic study as a member of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (C.C.O.F.I.). The program continued throughout the summer of 1963 and consisted of a monthly hydrographic station and sampling the plankton at the head of Bodega Submarine Canyon, located twenty-five miles west of Bodega Bay. Two plankton tows were taken on each ocean run. One of the samples, along with collection and hydrographic data, was sent to Scripps Institute of Oceanography. The other sample was retained at P.M.S. and constitutes the material for the …

Notes On The Natural History Of The Sabellariid Polychaete Phragmatopoma Californica, Dean Ernest Griffin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the coves and crevices at Natural Bridges State Park, Santa Cruz, California, one can find large masses of worm tubes constructed of sand. These tube masses often cover areas of several square feet. The tubes are usually straight and packed together in large masses. The individual tubes are about one-fourth of an inch in diameter and may be up to two and one-half feet long. The worm responsible for these masses of tubes is a small polychaete, Phragmatopoma californica.

Very little work has been done on the natural history of local sabellarlids. It is therefore the purpose of this …
