The Bat Ray, Myliobatis californica Gill, occurs from Oregon to the Gulf of California and is common in California bays during the spring and summer. MacGinitie (1935) observed that during its feeding activities, the Bat Ray can dig channels up to 1 meter wide, 50 cm deep and 4.5 meters long in benthic substrates. In intertidal sand flats in Tomales Bay, California, circular pits up to 1 meter in diameter and 20 cm in depth are made by Bat Rays in late summer. In some areas over 50% of the sand flat surface is covered with Bat Ray pits. This …

"Controlled Overdrying: Effects On Some Physical Properties Of Fine Paper", John T. Collins
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of certain drying variables on some physical strength properties when these variables were controlled to bring about overdrying conditions. The variables under study were contact time on the dryer can (% moisture) and different percentage hardwood-softwood compositions. From the study it was discovered that overdrying actually increases tensile values but mullen and tear values did indeed decrease.
The object of the following report was to see if there was a decrease, if any, in certain physical properties and to what degree. If overdrying a sheet actually decreases the physical properties …
The Effect Of Pigments In The Flotation De-Inking Of Newsprint, Harold M. Cody
The Effect Of Pigments In The Flotation De-Inking Of Newsprint, Harold M. Cody
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
This study was performed to determine the effect of the addition of pigments in the flotation de-inking of newsprint. It has been proposed that pigments aid in the flotation and removal of ink. Two pigments were investigated: talc and diatomaceous earth.
The addition of talc caused the brightness of the sheets to drop because the talc became heavily concentrated with ink. The addition of diatomaceous earth to the cell had no effect upon the flotation and removal of the ink. Therefore the addition of pigments to improve ink flotation and removal cannot be justified.

The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder
The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder
Masters Theses
Introduction
Daphnia pulex Leydig (Crustacea, Cladocera) is a common component of the zooplankton of freshwater lakes and ponds. Its importance in the aquatic trophic structure as food for small fish has long been recognized.
Typical populations of daphnia consist almost exclusively of females. Under favorable conditions this situation is perpetuated by parthenogenetic reproduction. Eggs produced in this manner are referred to as parthenogenetic or summer eggs. When stressed by falling temperatures, drought, overpopulation, or starvation, populations shift to sexual.reproduction. Parthenogenetic eggs are produced which develop into males. Other eggs known as ephippial or winter eggs are also produced, which after …

Composition And Structure Of Replacement Forest Stands Following Southern Pine Beetle Infestations As Related To Selected Site Variables In The Great Smoky Mountains, Nathaniel White Kuykendall Iii
Masters Theses
Stand composition and eleven site factors were sampled in 49 stands in the Great Smoky Mountains in which the pine overstory had been killed by the southern pine beetle. Replacement community types were determined using cluster analysis of relative densities for 21 common species. absolute densities for total stems, total pine, total oak, and eight individual species in the overstory, understory, and reproduction strata were related to selected site and vegetation variables by correlation and stepwise multiple regression.
Infestations greatly reduced the importance of pine in all replacement stands, converting most pine dominated stands to mixed pine-hardwood. Pine reproduction was …
