The Relation Of Soil And Other Site Factors To Forest Composition And Productivity In West Tennessee, Edwin Atkins Hebb Dec 1960

The Relation Of Soil And Other Site Factors To Forest Composition And Productivity In West Tennessee, Edwin Atkins Hebb

Doctoral Dissertations

Forest are important in the economy of Tennessee because so much of the state is forested. Half of west Tennessee, for example, is in forest, and since no other productive use is likely for the marginal land so used, it will probably remain forested.

According to a report prepared by the Tennessee Forest Industries Committee in 1957, industries based ultimately on the forests number about one-third of all manufacturing establishments in the state. In west Tennessee, with half of the area actually in forest, the forest economy forms a large part of the total economy of a region of limited …

The Effect Of Infection With Pasteurella Tularensis On The Metabolism Of White Rats, Gennaro John Miraglia Dec 1960

The Effect Of Infection With Pasteurella Tularensis On The Metabolism Of White Rats, Gennaro John Miraglia

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Although tularemia is generally considered to be a disease of rodents and of small ground animals, man is an occasional host. The early workers in this field succeeded in isolating and describing the causative organism, and in a relatively short time its nutritional requirements and cultural characteristics were fairly well understood. In slightly more than a decade after Pasteurella tularensis was first isolated (McCoy and Chapin, 1912), both American and Japanese workers had reported on its symptomatology, pathology, and epidemiology.

In more recent years, efforts have been directed to studies of the bacterium itself in an attempt to understand …

Observations On The Hibernation Of Culex Tarsalis Coquillett In Utah Valley, Utah, Dennis W. Trent

Theses and Dissertations

Culex tarsalis Coquillett is a common evening pest mosquito throughout the summer in most of temperate Western North America. Present evidence indicates this mosquito as the principal naturally infected vector of western equine encephalomyeltic (WEE) viruses. Certain interrelationships of WEE epidemiology and tarsalis bionomics are basically understood; however, in areas where winters are severe little is know of tarsalis hibernation, and the survival mechanism for WEE viruses in unknown. The purpose of this study, conducted from 1 September 1959 to 20 May 1960, was to gather ecological information on the hibernation of Culex tarsalis in Utah Valley, and secondly to …

Studies Of Protein-Bound Sulfhydryl And Disulfide Groups In The Mitotic Apparatus Of The Sea Urchin, Arbacia Punctulata, Naoko Kawamura Aug 1960

Studies Of Protein-Bound Sulfhydryl And Disulfide Groups In The Mitotic Apparatus Of The Sea Urchin, Arbacia Punctulata, Naoko Kawamura

Doctoral Dissertations

Problems in the present study

From the studies of Sakai and Dan (1959), it became apparent that the changes in soluble SH groups during the first division of sea urchin eggs, as reported by Rapkine (1931), represent the changes in protein SH groups dissolved in 25% TCA. It is also certain from the cytochemical study of the mitotic apparatus (Kawamura and Dan, 1958) that there are abundant SH groups in the protein of spindle and astral fibers. However, there is no evidence to show whether the total amount of protein-bound SH groups (present in both the 25% TCA-soluble and insoluble …

Notes On The Tardigrades Of Southwestern Michigan, James J. Sawtell Jul 1960

Notes On The Tardigrades Of Southwestern Michigan, James J. Sawtell

Masters Theses

Introduction

Tardigrades, comprising fewer than 350 species, are microscopic animals which inhabit mosses, lichens, and algae. Tardigrades or "water bears" are distributed throughout the world. These invertebrates are found in fresh-water substrates (Cooke, 1959; Marcus, 1939, Moore, 1939; Pennak, 1940), marine substrates (Chitwood, 1951; Green, 1950; Jeannel et al., 1940; Marcus, 1927, 1946; Pennak, 1953:240; Wieser, 1959) and terrestrial habitats (Cuenot, 1929; Marcus, 1960; Rodriguez-Roda, 1948; Pennak, 1953:240). The "water bears" have also been found in the psammolittoral zone where they live between grains of sand, (Pennak, 1940) and there feed on algal cells (Marcus, 1929). Tardigrades puncture the cell …

Studies On The Role Of The Seed Coat In The Germination Of Rhodotypos Kerrioides, Glenn H. Campbell Jul 1960

Studies On The Role Of The Seed Coat In The Germination Of Rhodotypos Kerrioides, Glenn H. Campbell

Masters Theses

Introduction

The propagation of plants by seeds is often made difficult by dormancy in seeds. A dormant seed is one that will not germinate when it is exposed to conditions favorable for germination. Such seeds will begin growth, however, after they have been subjected to the proper after-ripening conditions. Therefore, the grower must wait several months in many cases before his seeds will germinate. Since it is often desirable to determine the viability of seeds at an early date, seed dormancy has presented a major problem to the farmer. The testing of dormant seeds (4,6,44,56,64,) is widely practiced and rules …

A Quantitative Study Of The Effect Of Cutting & Fibrillation On Certain Paper Properties, Edwin C. Abbott Jun 1960

A Quantitative Study Of The Effect Of Cutting & Fibrillation On Certain Paper Properties, Edwin C. Abbott

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Introduction

From the time of the invention of paper about the year 105 by Ts'ai Lun, the process of beating the pulp as a preliminary to forming a sheet of paper has been recognized as of prime importance.

Early papermakers did not concern themselves greatly with theories; it was enough to know the process necessary to produce the various combinations of long and short, slow and free stocks according to the paper being made. When chemists began to enter the mills, however, their attention was naturally drawn to this important aspect of beating, and to the relationship between cellulose and …

Use Of Dialdehyde Starch In Coating Color Formulation, Craig F. Panse Jun 1960

After experimental preparation and evaluation of the coated and aftertreated sheets, the following conclusions were formed:

1. The addition of ten percent borax buffered or bisulphite buffered dialdehyde starch to conventional oxidized starch increases the surface strength of the coating …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Compressibility And Printing Smoothness, Richard R. Teugh Jun 1960

A Study Of The Relationship Between Compressibility And Printing Smoothness, Richard R. Teugh

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This investigation seems to indicate that printing smoothness, although dependent upon both smoothness of the sheet and compressibility, is much more dependent upon the smoothness of the paper being printed. For the samples tested printing pressure required seems to be a function of the smoothness and the deformation pressure with the smoothness apparently most important.

Acute Effects Of Acetazoleamide (Diamox) Administration On Pulmonary Carbon Dioxide Exchange In Humans, George G. Burton Jun 1960

Acute Effects Of Acetazoleamide (Diamox) Administration On Pulmonary Carbon Dioxide Exchange In Humans, George G. Burton

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous studies dealing with the effects of oral acetazoleamide (DiamoxR) administration in humans have yielded equivocal results. Effects of intravenous administration of this agent, a potent carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, have not been studied until recently. It is postulated that difficulty in interpreting these results has risen in part from failure to evaluate given parameters in terms of drug concentrations or degree of carbonic anhydrase inhibition achieved.

These concentrations were ascertained throughout the present work of this Thesis, which deals with the effects of both small and large doses of this agent upon ventilatory parameters in man.

In these …

Tenderness Of Beef As Affected By Variations In Time And Temperature Of Application Of A Meat Tenderizer, Eleanor Marguerite Pratt

Masters Theses

(Summary)

In this study 3 meat tenderizers, containing the proteolytic enzyme papa in powdered f'orm, which were available in the Knoxville retail market were tested. The effect of these tenderizers on flavor, juiciness, and tenderness of steaks and roasts cooked by dry-heat methods was compared. One of the 3 meat tenderizers was then used to study the effect of increases in length of the precooking holding-period and of variations in temperature of the precooking holding-period on flavor, juiciness, and tenderness.

Sensory-difference tests were used to evaluate the flavor, juiciness, and tenderness of the steaks and roasts.
