A Study Of The Respiratory System Of The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Ben Peter Arnowitz Oct 1943

A Study Of The Respiratory System Of The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Ben Peter Arnowitz

Bachelors’ Theses

The respiratory mechanisms of birds, unlike that of mammals, are definitely adapted to the function of flight. Because of this added adaptation, we should expect, therefore, some morphological and perhaps even embryological, physiological, and histological differences. An example of a morphological difference between birds and mammals is the intricate system of air-sacs that are present in birds. This remarkable feature is probably the reason why birds are able to fly as they do.

In this thesis the writer has used the sparrow (Passer domesticus) for the basis of his experiments. This particular bird was chosen in preference to …

Some Physical And Chemical Properties Of Wheat Starch In Relationship To The Maturity Of The Wheat, Claude W. Bice Jul 1943

Some Physical And Chemical Properties Of Wheat Starch In Relationship To The Maturity Of The Wheat, Claude W. Bice

Master's Theses

Wheat is one of the most valuable of economic plants and is grown extensively throughout the world. Because of the unique chemical and physical properties of its gluten, 'Wheat is superior to all other cereals for bread making. Its high starch content provides a tremendous source of energy as a food, as well as filling certain industrial starch needs, especially in textile manufacturing . The present study on properties of immature and mature wheat starches should be of inestimable worth for evaluation of damaged wheats for starch production, as well as for yielding fundamental information which may facilitate the use …

The Influence Of Dowicide A On Drosophila Melanogaster, Helen Mary Dore May 1943

The Influence Of Dowicide A On Drosophila Melanogaster, Helen Mary Dore

Bachelors’ Theses

Drosophila melanogaster plays a far greater part in science than man at first realizes. A study of their heredity makes it possible to develop laws of human heredity and with this knowledge, thus provide for the betterment of mankind. Considerations which lead to the choice of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, in experimentation are briefly the following: (a) its small size which makes, it convenient to keep; (b) its short life cycle; and (c) the ease with which it can be cultivated. Since fruit flies are so important to science, it follows that it is also important that a …

An Electrophoretic Determinatin Of The Properties Of Methacrol M.E. By The Use Of A Capillary Cross-Arm "U" Tube, Richard Reiland Bains May 1943

An Electrophoretic Determinatin Of The Properties Of Methacrol M.E. By The Use Of A Capillary Cross-Arm "U" Tube, Richard Reiland Bains

Bachelors’ Theses

this research was undertaken primarily to discover the use of a capillary cross-arm "U" tube in the determination of the electrophoretic and other electrical proper ties of a plastic emulsion.

The primary objective was to determine the isoelectric point of the emulsion and also the optimum pH or electro-endosmotic motion.

The secondary and distant objective was to note when, how, and it any coherent plating on the electrodes took place.

Growth Seed Yields, And Seedling Production Of Native Prairie Plants In Various Habitats Of The Mixed Prairie, H. Ray Brown Apr 1943

Growth Seed Yields, And Seedling Production Of Native Prairie Plants In Various Habitats Of The Mixed Prairie, H. Ray Brown

Master's Theses

The native vegetation of the mixed prairie of west-central Kansas was subjected to the worst drought on record during the period 1933 to 1939 inclusive. Data secured from the United States Weather Bureau reveal the fact that precipitation during this period of drought was far below normal . The rainfall deficit as reported by Albertson and Weaver (1942) was nearly 35 inches for this 7-year period. Other climatic factors such as wind movement, relative humidity, and temperature were equally abnormal. The extreme drought period greatly modified the vegetation of the mixed prairie and the short-grass disclimax. The basal cover in …

Student Agricultural Work Experiences In San Joaquin County, With Particular Reference To The Work Experiences Of Students Of Stockton And Lodi Public Schools In The Summer Of 1942, Frank L. Nash Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As early as February, 1942, fears of an agricultural labor shortage began to be expressed in California. The Pacific Southwest Area Committee of the Young Men’s Christian Association asserts in a statement of policy on Emergency Harvest Camps, “The California State Chamber of Commerce’s Central Coast Council’s Agricultural Committee points out that ‘the removal of enemy aliens from coastal areas, the absorption of migrant workers into defense industries, and increased government quotas for the production of many crops has created a serious agricultural problem.’ (News release, February 28, 1942).”

In San Joaquin County 5,000 Japanese were evacuated. Most of these …

The Life History Of Cyclocoelum Microcotyleum, George Alfred Butler Jan 1943

The Life History Of Cyclocoelum Microcotyleum, George Alfred Butler

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Monostome trematodes of the family cyclocoelidae, taken from the American coot, Fulica americana, were described as a new species, Cyclocoelum microcotyleum, by Noble in 1933. These flukes were found in the air-spaces or the coelomes of birds taken from the waterways near Stockton, California.

Before this present work various attempts had been made to determine the lite history of this fluke. A number of fresh-water snails, indigenous to the region in which the definitive host was found, were exposed to miracidia of this fluke, but observations or infection were not obtained. In the winter of 1940-41 specimens of …
