Floristic Study Of Crawford County, Illinois, Loy R. Phillippe

Masters Theses

A two year inventory of the flora of Crawford County resulted in a collection of 809 species and has brought the present known vegetation to 918 species encompasing 470 genera in 127 families. A total of 388 species not previously reported were either collected during this study or previously deposited within the herbarium of Eastern Illinois University. An annotated checklist of each species is given followed by a brief note concerning the habitat in which it was collected, the collector's initials, and collecting number. During the search for these specimens a number of interesting natural areas were noted. An account …

The Effects Of Crowding On The Diurnal Ascorbic Acid Levels Of Albino Rats, Mary Jo Barr Jan 1973

The Effects Of Crowding On The Diurnal Ascorbic Acid Levels Of Albino Rats, Mary Jo Barr

Masters Theses

The adrenal physiology of the albino rat was studied through the measurement of adrenal ascorbic acid levels. A cyclic phenomenon was observed which follows the diel periodicity of the animal. Ascorbic acid values were found to be characteristically higher in males than in females. A similar difference was also seen in populations divided into young animals (body weight less than 175 grams) and old animals (body weight greater than 175 grams). Crowding, induced by manipulating the area of cage space per gram of body weight, was observed to be a definite stressor and caused the adrenal ascorbic acid levels to …

Morphometric Variation In Aphelenchus Avenae Bastian, 1865 With Varied Nutrition And Time, John P. Kline Jan 1973

Morphometric Variation In Aphelenchus Avenae Bastian, 1865 With Varied Nutrition And Time, John P. Kline

Masters Theses

The effect of varied time, nutritional media, and species of fungus on taxonomic characters (L, a, b1, c, and V) of Aphelenchus avenae was investigated. The effect of these ecological conditions on morphometrics was variable; however, these characters varied significantly with increased time, decreased nutritional media, and species of fungus. The greatest number of morphometric changes occurred with increased time, and the fewest with species of fungus. With changing environmental conditions, “V” values were the most stable character.

Seasonal Variation In The Tubular And Interstitial Areas Of The Testes In Sternotherus Odoratus L., Robert Hans Spaet Jan 1973

Seasonal Variation In The Tubular And Interstitial Areas Of The Testes In Sternotherus Odoratus L., Robert Hans Spaet

Masters Theses

Seasonal changes within the tubular and interstitial areas of the testes in Sternotherus odoratus are investigated, histologically and histochemically. Forty specimens were collected in Illinois, Tennessee and Louisiana between May, 1969 and August, 1972.

Many of the histological and macroscopic observations made by Risley (1938) on the spermatogenic cycle of S. odoratus in Michigan are confirmed. Contrary to his findings, fluctuations in interstitial cell nuclear diameters are observed during spermatogenesis. Greatest diameters coincide with what Risley has considered " . . . period of most active breeding." Sertoli cell nuclear diameters undergo similar fluctuations being greatest during spring breeding and …

The Effects Of Acute Stress On Adrenal Ascorbic Acid Levels, Robert Joseph Collier Jan 1973

The Effects Of Acute Stress On Adrenal Ascorbic Acid Levels, Robert Joseph Collier

Masters Theses

The diurnal rhythm of adrenal ascorbic acid (DAR) displays an inverse relationship to the diurnal rhythm of circulating levels of plasma corticosteroids. Alloxan monohydrate, 175 mg/kg body weight was given subcutaneously to albino rats to determine the effect of the diabetic state on the DAR. A total of 200 female albino rats were divided into two study groups. Study Group I was composed of 150 animals divided into populations of 15, each including 3 controls. Study Group II was composed of populations of 5, each group containing all controls or all alloxinated rats. The populations of 15 were sacrificed at …

An Electromyographic Study Of The Effects Of Lateral Asymmetry On The Upper Leg Muscles Used In Normal Walking On A Treadmill, S. Marie Landmesser Jan 1973

An Electromyographic Study Of The Effects Of Lateral Asymmetry On The Upper Leg Muscles Used In Normal Walking On A Treadmill, S. Marie Landmesser

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to determine through electromyography whether a non-pathological fault, such as lateral asymmetry at the pelvic level, would hinder, in significant manner, efficient functioning of the body.

A review of the literature revealed that although previous experiments had been conducted to determine the effects certain postural deviations had on the normal, efficient functioning of the body and that previous experiments had been conducted to determine which muscles performed which task as related to walking, none dealt with the specific effects of lateral deviations at the pelvic level on the upper leg muscles used in walking. …

A Survey Of Ectoparasites From Microtus Ochrogaster Ochrogaster (Wagner), Peromyscus Leucopus Noveboracensis (Fisher), And Cryptotis Parva Harlani (Say), Fred Basolo Jr.

Masters Theses

Ectoparasites were taken from 50 white footed deer mice, Peromyscus leucopus noveboracensis (Fisher), 50 prairie voles, Microtus ochrogaster ochrogaster (Wagner), and 11 least shrews, Cryptotis parva harlani (Say), within a five mile radius of Charleston, Illinois from 23 January 1973 through 25 June 1973. A total number of 4,242 ectoparasites were recovered; 2,395 from Microtus ochrogaster, 542 from Peromyscus leucopus, and 1,305 from Cryptotis parva. The major groups of ectoparasites and their percent recovery were: Acari (excl. of Metastigmata) 81.50%, Metastigmata 2.95%, Anoplura 15.50% and Siphonaptera 0.50%. A study of the ectoparasites recovered revealed representatives of 18 …

A Study Of Organochlorine Insecticides In Freshwater Crayfish -- Analytical Problems And Biomonitoring Survey, Robert C. Vanderjack Jan 1973

A Study Of Organochlorine Insecticides In Freshwater Crayfish -- Analytical Problems And Biomonitoring Survey, Robert C. Vanderjack

Masters Theses

Crayfish were collected from 3 sites on Polecat Creek, Coles County, Illinois in early spring, early summer, and late summer of 1972. Pesticides were extracted from the crayfish tissue in a one step procedure utilizing a Florisil elution column. Analysis was by electron capture gas chromatography. Pesticide residues in the nannogram range were analyzed and background contamination was an important consideration. Sources of background contamination were investigated and teflon stopcocks, Florisil, and residues on “cleaned” glassware were found to be major contamination sources. Distilled water used in flushing glassware should also be considered a potential contamination source.

Morphological And Physiological Effects Of 2,4-D On Gram-Negative And Gram-Positive Bacteria, John H. Rupnow Jan 1973

Morphological And Physiological Effects Of 2,4-D On Gram-Negative And Gram-Positive Bacteria, John H. Rupnow

Masters Theses

Manometric, spectrophotometric, photomicrographic and quantitative biochemical techniques were employed to determine the morphological and physiological effects of 2,4-D on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The growth and motility of Gram-positive bacteria appeared to be more adversely affected than the growth and motility of Gram-negative species. The terminal oxidation, lysis, and chain length of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria did not appear to be affected by the concentrations used. The average cell size of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was observed to increase after exposure to 1000 ppm 2,4-D. The normal leakage of amino acid and ultraviolet light absorbing cell constituents appeared …

A Study Of Soil Amoebae Infective To Mice, Pamela Mcdaniel Jan 1973

A Study Of Soil Amoebae Infective To Mice, Pamela Mcdaniel

Masters Theses

On January 1, 1973, 10 soil samples were collected from areas in Coles County, Illinois, in an effort to isolate soil amoebae. All 10 soil samples were cultured on bacto-nutrient agar and colonies of amoebae genera isolated were Acanthamoeba and Hartmannella. Amoebabacteria cultures prepared from soil isolates were injected into each of 10 adult mice which were sacrificed at the end of the nine days and examined for evidence of infection and pathogenicity. Lesions were observed in two mice and amoebae cysts and bacterial colonies were present in nine mice. Amoeba-bacteria cultures were purified using streptomycin antibiotic discs and …

Parasites From Gizzard Shad, Dorosoma Cepedianum, In Lake Charleston, Illinois, Francis M. Yabai Kaikumba Jan 1973

Parasites From Gizzard Shad, Dorosoma Cepedianum, In Lake Charleston, Illinois, Francis M. Yabai Kaikumba

Masters Theses

Eighty gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) from Lake Charleston, Charleston, Illinois were examined for parasites. Eight fish were parasitized. Three fish contained the acanthocephalan Tanaorhamphus longirostris, three fish harbored cestodes of the genus Glaridacris and two fish had the nematode Camallanus oxycephalus. The latter is here reported for the first time from gizzard shad. Twenty fish were infected with the fungus Saprolegnia sp. The numbers of helminth parasites harbored by shad are less than reported for other forage fish. However, the incident of parasitism reported in this study is greater than that reported by previous workers.

Studies On Muropeptide Amino Acids Of Rhizobium Japonicum, Mohammed Alauddin

Masters Theses

The isolation of Rhizobium japonicum cell walls was performed by ultrasonication and the enzymatic digestion with DNase, RNase and pronase separately. Crude cell walls were washed with M NaCl and 5% SDS and were isolated by 20,000 g centrifugation. Muropeptide amino acids were freed by hydrolysis at 121C for 10 minutes in 6N HCl.

Detection of Rhizobium japonicum murein layer amino acids was done by 2-dimensional instant thin layer chromatography on silica gel plates. The solvents found most favorable, were n-butanol: acetic acid: water and n-propanol: 34% ammonium hydroxide. Amino acid spots were developed by spraying ninhydrin on the chromatograms, …
