Lysis Of The Rhizobiaceae, Craig Richard Baumrucker Jan 1971

Lysis Of The Rhizobiaceae, Craig Richard Baumrucker

Masters Theses

The following members of the Rhizobiaceae were tested for their lytic response to various treatments: Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Chromobacterium violaceum, Rhizobium phaseoli, Rhizobium trifolii, Rhizobium lupini, and Rhizobium japonicum. Lysis was observed in spent growth media and as a function of saline concentration, pH, buffer composition, disodium (ethylenedinitrilo) tetraacetate (EDTA) concentration, and lysozyme.

Cells were harvested by centrifugation, washed, and resuspended in various treatment solutions. The lytic response was followed spectrophotometrically.

The different responses of the six cultures was applied to a summation of reclassification proposals evolved through modern taxonomic techniques such as DNA homology …

Pseudomonas As Causative Agents Of Fluorescence In Anguispira Kochi (Pfeiffer) Mucus, John Michael Baum Jan 1971

Pseudomonas As Causative Agents Of Fluorescence In Anguispira Kochi (Pfeiffer) Mucus, John Michael Baum

Masters Theses

The mucus from land snail specimens of Anguispira kochi collected from Coles and Edgar counties, Illinois, emits a blue fluorescence when exposed to ultra-violet light. Pseudomonas, a genus of bacteria which produces fluorescent pigments, has been isolated from the mucus of these snails. The object of the study was to compare the fluorescence of the mucus from individuals of A. kochi with the fluorescence of the pigments produced on a synthetic medium by pseudomonads isolated from the mucus of these snails. An effort was made to establish that Pseudomonas is the causative agent of fluorescence in the mucus of …

Nutrition Studies Of The Brindled Madtom, Noturus Miurus Jordan, Based On Stomach Content Analysis, Randall Stephen Madding Jan 1971

Nutrition Studies Of The Brindled Madtom, Noturus Miurus Jordan, Based On Stomach Content Analysis, Randall Stephen Madding

Masters Theses

Brindled madtoms and small channel catfish (140 mm or less) were examined to determine their food habits and the possibility of competition for food organisms between the two species when collected from the same area.

Two hundred twenty-three brindled madtoms were collected from Polecat Creek (study area I) 3 miles southwest of Ashmore, Coles County, Illinois. The study in Polecat Creek was conducted from July 10, 1967 to June 5, 1968, collections being made approximately every month. Two hundred forty-five brindled madtoms and 140 channel catfish were collected from the Embarras River (study area II) 2 miles south of Charleston, …

The Cytogenetics Of The Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Three Wild Type Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rosemary Ann Harris Jan 1971

The Cytogenetics Of The Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Three Wild Type Strains Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rosemary Ann Harris

Masters Theses

This investigation involves the cytogenetics of three strains of field-collected, wild-type Illinois Drosophila melanogaster. These three strains were collected from Charleston, Channahon, and Olney, Illinois, in 1967.

The purpose of this study was to compare cytogenetically these three strains and to determine if there exists differences among them. First, the chromosomes themselves were studied for the purpose of identifying the four chromosomes of D. melanogaster by their characteristic banding patterns. Then, the chromosomes of the three strains were examined for chromosomal aberrations, principally inversions. The cytogenetics of the chromosomes of the three strains were then compared and contrasted.

The Immediate Effect Of Swimming And Track Competition On Blood Ph Values, James B. Knott Jan 1971

The Immediate Effect Of Swimming And Track Competition On Blood Ph Values, James B. Knott

Masters Theses

The purpose of the study was to investigate the changes associated with blood pH and different exercise work loads during competition. Finger tip blood samples (1 milliliter), were obtained from 33 male subjects from the varsity swimming and track teams of Eastern Illinois University. The samples were taken prior to exercise and between three and seven and one half minutes after cessation of the event. The blood samples were analyzed with a Radiometer Micro Blood pH Unit. The subjects were chosen on the basis of the events in which they competed. The swimming subjects competed in the 100, 200, 500, …

Some Ecological Effects Of The Oil Industry On Farmland In East Central Illinois, Dale E. Fruendt Jan 1971

Some Ecological Effects Of The Oil Industry On Farmland In East Central Illinois, Dale E. Fruendt

Masters Theses

Between June, 1970 and July, 1971 a two square mile area in East Central Illinois served as a study area for the effects of the oil industry on farm land. Observations were made on several farms concerning the activity of oil companies and interviews with farmers were held. Two areas of farmland were given special attention. One was a clover field where salt water had flooded a portion of the field. The other area was a corn field where oil had flooded approximately eight acres of land. Random samples of invertebrates were taken in both of these areas as well …

Industrial Pollution In Coles County, Illinois, Michael William Conlin Jan 1971

Industrial Pollution In Coles County, Illinois, Michael William Conlin

Masters Theses

The Anaconda American Brass Company at Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois was found to discharge waste containing excessive amounts of copper, hexavalent chromium, sulfates, acids, and alkalies. These wastes were found to enter an agricultural field tile system and to emit at the Shellhammer tile where they entered a small unnamed creek, a large pond along Interstate 57, and Riley Creek.

Tests of the Shellhammer tile and Anaconda American Brass Company effluent were conducted from March, 1970 thru May, 1971. Maximum concentrations determined were as follows: (1) copper -- 15.5 ppm; (2) hexavalent chromium -- 1.5 ppm; (3) pH -- range …

Reproductive Cycle Of The Male Snapping Turtle, Chelydra Serpentina Serpentina (Linné), Harold Edward Benny Jan 1971

Reproductive Cycle Of The Male Snapping Turtle, Chelydra Serpentina Serpentina (Linné), Harold Edward Benny

Masters Theses

Thirty-seven male Chelydra s. serpentina were collected from Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Wisconsin during months of activity from May, 1969 to June 1971. Carapace length for each specimen was measured, and testes and epididymides were dissected out, weighed, measured, fixed, and preserved in Baker's neutral formalin within seven days of capture. Paraffin sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Frozen sections were stained with Sudan IV.

The spermatogenic cycle was similar to those of other Chelonians and reptiles exhibiting post-nuptial spermatogenesis. In Illinois spermatocytogenesis begins in late March or early April. Meiosis is evident throughout May and early June. …
