Economic Contribution Of The Agricultural Sector To The Arkansas Economy In 2017, Leah English, Jennie Popp, Wayne Miller
Research Reports and Research Bulletins
Agriculture and associated agricultural activities are major contributors to the Arkansas economy. Agriculture is defined as the sum of agricultural production and processing activities, unless otherwise specified, and includes crop and animal production and processing, agricultural support industries, forestry and forest products, and textile goods. Agriculture contributes to the economy through direct agricultural production and value-added processing, and also leads to economic activity in other parts of the economy. This report is the eleventh in a series of reports examining agriculture’s economic contribution to the Arkansas economy. The total economic contribution of agriculture (direct, indirect, and induced effects) on value …

RNA interference (RNAi) is a highly specific gene-silencing mechanism that can cause rapid insect mortality when essential genes are targeted. RNAi is being developed as a tool for integrated pest management of some crop pests. Here we focus on an aggressive forest pest that kills extensive tracts of pine forests, the southern pine beetle (SPB), Dendroctonus frontalis. We sought to identify reference genes for quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and validate RNAi responses in SPB by mortality and gene silencing analysis. Using an adult beetle feeding bioassay for oral ingestion of dsRNA, we measured the expression and demonstrated knockdown of …

The Case For Clt Manufacturing In Maine, Advanced Structures & Composites Center, University Of Maine, Maine Mass Timber Commercialization Center
General University of Maine Publications
The Maine Mass Timber Commercialization Center (MMTCC) was founded in 2017 in direct response to a 2017 Department of Commerce federal interagency Economic Development Assessment Team (EDAT) report on the Maine forest-based economy, specifically Priority “E” of the EDAT report stating: “Invest in the research, development and commercialization of emerging wood technologies”. In particular, the EDAT report singled out the unique opportunity that exists for development of Mass Timber (e.g. cross laminated timber) production in Maine:
“Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) research at the University of Maine is linked to several potential manufacturing facilities seeking east coast locations. Immediately form a …
