Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

To improve billfish assessments, researchers have applied habitat-based models that incorporate behavioral and oceanographic parameters to standardize historical catch-per-uniteffort time -series data, accounting for significant gear changes over time. However, there has been little behavioral data from Atlantic billfishes to support these models. We provide information on habitat preferences of white marlin released from recreational and commercial fisheries in the western North Atlantic. White marlin were tagged with pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) from recreational rod and reel (n=22) and commercial pelagic longline (n=2) fisheries between May-November 2002. Our data indicate that each surviving white marlin spent the majority of …

Euglandina rosea (Ferussac, 1821) is a carnivorous snail native to the southeastern United States, including Florida (Hubricht, 1985; Wolfe and Brooks, 1968). It is known as a ground-dwelling terrestrial snail that feeds on terrestrial gastropods (Burch, 1962; Pilsbry, 1946). Introduced to Hawaii in 1955, it is one of the worst cases of an intended biological control agent attacking non-target species (Cowie, 2001). Exclosures keep it away from consuming remaining endemic snails, including the endangered Achatinella species (Stone, 1999).

Habitat Manipulation Of The Apple Orchard Floor To Increase Ground-Dwelling Predators And Predation Of Cydia Pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Clarissa R. Mathews, Dale G. Bottrell, M. W. Brown Jan 2004

Habitat Manipulation Of The Apple Orchard Floor To Increase Ground-Dwelling Predators And Predation Of Cydia Pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Clarissa R. Mathews, Dale G. Bottrell, M. W. Brown

Augmenting generalist predator populations in new apple (Malus domestica Bork) plantings could potentially aid in the establishment of balanced orchard ecosystems that are less susceptible to pest outbreaks. Habitat can be an important factor in retaining predators in a system and can affect predator efficiency. We investigated the potential of increasing a complex of generalist ground-dwelling predators and enhancing biological control in a young 'Golden Delicious' apple orchard through ground habitat manipulation. We modified the orchard floor with four comparative habitat treatments: (1) detritus-rich compost mulch layer, (2) detritus-free synthetic mulch layer, (3) herbicide-treated vegetation thatch, and (4) bare …

G04-1529 Controlling Pond Plant Growth With Bottom Barriers, Tadd M. Barrow, John C. Holz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Rooted aquatic plants are a natural part of the lake ecosystem and comprise a critical component of a healthy lake. They stabilize shorelines, oxygenate water, provide cover and spawning areas for fish, and provide habitat for aquatic invertebrates that are critical for juvenile fish growth.

Although plants are an important part of a lake's ecosystem, it's important to control their growth to assure a healthy, aesthetic environment. This NebGuide offers ideas for controlling plant growth.
