A New Species And Significant Range Extension For The Genus Fractipes Bechynĕ (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae: Eumolpini), Wills Flowers

Insecta Mundi

Fractipes tayrona new species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae: Eumolpini) is described from a dry forest on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. This locality is very distant from the localities in southeast Brazil, where the other two known species of Fractipes Bechynĕ were described. Male and female genitalia are described for the first time in this genus, and F. tayrona is compared with holotype photographs of F. rhabdopteroides Bechynĕ and F. secundus Bechynĕ and Springlová de Bechynĕ.

Three New Species Of South American Checkered Beetles (Coleoptera: Cleridae: Clerinae), Weston Opitz

Insecta Mundi

Three new species of Enoclerus Gahan (Coleoptera: Cleridae) are described and illustrated. They are: Enoclerus minas Opitz from Colombia and Brazil, E. salta Opitz from Argentina, and E. thomasi Opitz from Bolivia.

Corporaal (1950: 14) lists 185 species of Enoclerus Gahan (Coleoptera: Cleridae: Clerinae). I know of over 60 undescribed species. It is a daunting task to organize such a high number of species into some sort of taxonomic revision, which cannot be provided at this time. However, some of these new species can be described that will be added to a larger work at a later date. Such descriptive …

A Fourth Account Of Centipede (Chilopoda) Predation On Bats, T. Todd Lindley, Jesús Molinari, Rowland M. Shelley, Barry N. Steger

Insecta Mundi

With an incident in Palo Duro Canyon, Texas, USA, Scolopendra heros Girard (Chilopoda: Scolopendromorpha: Scolopendridae) becomes the third centipede species known to prey on bats; S. gigantea Linnaeus and S. viridicornis Newport have been so documented in Venezuela and Brazil, respectively. The Texas predation was interrupted by the predator/prey pair’s falling around 15–20 m from the canyon wall and, perhaps also, by human presence where they landed. The centipede uncoiled and retreated to shelter under a nearby rock and, after initial immobilization, so did the bat.

Corrections To Neotropical Rhinaspis Perty And Plectris Lepeletier And Audinet-Serville (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) Classifi Cation And Nomenclature, Andrew B. T. Smith

The name Melolontha hypocrita Mannerheim, 1829 has been long unused, even though it is the type species of Hyporhiza Dejean, 1833. I examined the only known specimen from the type series and here designate it as the lectotype. Examination of this lectotype reveals that this species is best placed in the genus Rhinaspis Perty, 1830. Consequently, the genus Hyporhiza Dejean, 1833 is confi rmed as a junior synonym of Rhinaspis. Further, the replacement name Rhinaspis fuhrmanni is proposed for Rhinaspis hypocrita (Blanchard, 1850), a new secondary homonym of Rhinaspis hypocrita (Mannerheim, 1829). A homonymy problem was also discovered and …

Five New Species Of Bakerius Bondar (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae: Aleurodicinae) From The Americas And Vietnam, John W. Dooley, Allan Smith-Pardo

Insecta Mundi

Five new species of Bakerius Bondar (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae: Aleurodicinae) are described and illustrated from the Americas and Vietnam based on the adult, nymph, and pupal stages: Bakerius asiaticus, Bakerius colombianus, Bakerius hondurensis, Bakerius leei and Bakerius peruvianus. The following six species: Bakerius attenuatus Bondar 1923, Bakerius calmoni Bondar 1928, Bakerius marmoratus (Hempel 1923), Bakerius phrygilanthi Bondar 1923, Bakerius sanguineus Bondar 1928, and Bakerius sublatus Bondar 1928 are re-described. An identification key to the New World genera of the subfamily Aleurodicinae, and a key to the adults and the puparia of Bakerius species are provided.

Insecta Mundi

The brachypterous Brazilian stag beetle genus Altitatiayus Weinreich (Coleoptera, Lucanidae, Lucaninae) was previously known only from states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Altitatiayus campoi, a new species from São Paulo, the southernmost in distribution, is described here and apparently represents a new species group with some exclusive characters. It is compared with other species of the genus and a key to species of Altitatiayus is provided.

Megatharsis buckleyi Waterhouse, 1891 is newly recorded from Brazil, extending its distributional range beyond Ecuador and Peru. A further new provincial record from Ecuador is presented in detail, and the species’ distribution and habitat is discussed. Insecta Mundi

The pyrgine genus Porphyrogenes Watson, 1893 (Hesperiidae) is discussed, especially as it occurs in central Rondônia, Brazil. Of eleven species of Porphyrogenes found in Rondônia, four (P. specularis, P. convexus, P. sparus, and P. spadix) are described as new species. Biological details of the genus are discussed. An additional five new species of Porphyrogenes (P. spina, P. sporta, P. splendidus, P. simulator, and P. speciosus) are described from elsewhere. Porphyrogenes cervinus (Plötz, 1883), new synonym of Porphyrogenes ferruginea (Plötz, 1883), reinstated status, is raised from a subspecies of Porphyrogenes despecta (Butler, 1870) to species-level. Theclinae Of Rondonia, Brazil: Gigantorubra And Angulopis, With Descriptions Of New Species (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), George T. Austin, Kurt Johnson

Insecta Mundi

The species of Gigantorubra and Angulopis encountered in the Cacaulandia area of central Rondonia, Brazil, are reviewed. These include species (all new) of Gigantorubra (G. microserrata, G. divergens, G. quadramacula, G. ampla, G. fuscafascia, G. silva, G. rondonia, G. obscura, G. perplexa, G. purpura) and one new species of Angulopis (A. tenuis). Thecla sangola Hewitson (1868) is recognized as having priority over Thecla autoclea Hewitson (1863-1878 [1877]), new synonym. Rondonia continues to appear as a center of thecline endemism and to provide abundant examples of sibling species diversity.
