Parrot Damage To Bluegum Tree Crops : A Review Of The Problem And Possible Solutions, P Ritson Nov 1995

Parrot Damage To Bluegum Tree Crops : A Review Of The Problem And Possible Solutions, P Ritson

Resource management technical reports

Damage to Bluegum (Eucalyptus globulus) tree crops by the Twenty-eight Parrot (Barnardius zonarius) is emerging problem which could threaten the viability of the infant Bluegum industry in south-western Australia. The parrots strip bark from the lead shoot of the Bluegums causing the shoots to break off. Consequently lateral shoots develop resulting in deformed (bent or multi-stem) trees unsuited to harvest and utilisation.Indications that the reason Twenty-eight Parrots strip bark from Bluegum is to obta behaviour' and hence the damage may also develop in areas where it is absent or uncommon now. Currently the zone of worst damage includes around 20% …

A Late Quaternary Pollen Record From Cedarburg Bog, Wisconsin, Glen G. Fredlund, James R. Brozowski, Jong Woo Oh Oct 1995

A Late Quaternary Pollen Record From Cedarburg Bog, Wisconsin, Glen G. Fredlund, James R. Brozowski, Jong Woo Oh

Field Station Bulletins

Late Quaternary (from the last glaciation to present) forest history is inferred from the Cedarburg Bog fossil pollen record. Analysis of fossil pollen samples extend over 4 meters of continuous core recovered from near the center of the bog. The deepest and oldest of the fossil pollen assemblages (ca. 12,000 years ago) suggest open spruce woodlands unlike any in the contemporary boreal ecosystem. Pollen from the Pleistocene-Holocene transition (11,000 years ago) is marked by a number of abrupt changes in forest composition related to rapid climate change, species immigration, and progressive soils and ecosystem maturation. By 9,000 years ago most …

Life Cycle Patterns In Wisconsin Spiders, Joan P. Jass Oct 1995

Life Cycle Patterns In Wisconsin Spiders, Joan P. Jass

Field Station Bulletins

Five life cycle patterns in spiders are described and examples given. The most common pattern, maturation and mating in spring and early summer, is elaborated with a detailed description of the seasonal development of Philodromus cespitum. The four other patterns are exemplified by the following southeastern Wisconsin species: Argiope trifasciata--fall mating, Centromerus sylvaticus-- winter mating, Trochosa terricola--two mating seasons, and Pholcus phalangioides--year round mating.

Plans For Crash-Tested Bridge Railings For Longitudinal Wood Decks, Michael A. Ritter, Ronald K. Faller, Paula D. Hilbrich Lee, Barry Thomas Rosson, Sheila Rimal Duwadi

USDA Forest Service / UNL Faculty Publications

In the past decade, bridge railing design criteria have moved away from static-load design and have focused on full-scale crash testing as a more appropriate and reliable means of evaluating bridge railings. The five bridge railing plans presented reflect the results of a cooperative research project between the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboraotry; and the Federal Highway Administration. The project objective was to develop and crash test bridge railings and approach railing transitions for longitudinal wood bridge decks. The bridge railings were completed in accordance with AASHTO Performance Levell, Performance Level …

Geodemographic Approaches To Identifying U.S. Furniture Markets, Frank M. Howell, Larry Doolittle, Jarryl B. Ritchie, Melissa A. Barfield, Steven H. Bullard

Faculty Publications

Demand for household furniture is shaped by a multitude of dynamic forces, from the global economic situation to subtle changes in consumer preferences. Correspondingly, the academic disciplines employed to identify, analyze, and predict these forces range from macroeconomics to psychology, and include demography, sociology, geography, and several applied fields. The demographic characteristics of furniture consumers has been a particularly popular area of research, primarily because of the availability of secondary data from various public · agencies. Some of this research is reviewed in a subsequent section of this report.

Characterization Of Aspen Isoprene Synthase, An Enzyme Responsible For Leaf Isoprene Emission To The Atmosphere, Gary M. Silver, Ray Fall

Aspen Bibliography

Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is a volatile hydrocarbon emitted from many plant species to the atmosphere, where it plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry. An enzyme extracted from aspen (Populus tremuloides) leaves was previously found to catalyze the Mg2+-dependent elimination of pyrophosphate from dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) to form isoprene (Silver, G. M., and Fall, R.(1991) Plant Physiol. 97, 1588-1591). This enzyme, isoprene synthase, has now been purified 4000-fold to near homogeneity. The enzyme had a native molecular mass of 98-137 kDa and isoelectric point of 4.7 and contained 58- and 62-kDa subunits, implying that it is a heterodimer. …

Project Report No. 38, Average Observed Fusiform Rust Transition Paths, O. Schabenberger, T. G. Greroire, J. David Lenhart

Informal Project Reports

fusiform rust ( Cronatrium quercuum [Berk. ] Miyabe ex Shirai f . sp . tusiforme L. ) is a devastating disease in loblolly ( Pinus taeda L. ) and slash ( Pinus elliottii Englem. ) pine plantations throughout the southern United States . Pine stems infected with fusiform rust are subject to hazards such as wind breakage, and if a pine stem with a gall on it does survive to harvest, utilization of the infected stem piece may be down-graded from possible lumber to probable pulpwood or maybe completely discarded .
