Pando's Pulse: Vital Signs Signal Need For Course Correction At World-Renowned Aspen Forest, Paul C. Rogers Sep 2022

Pando's Pulse: Vital Signs Signal Need For Course Correction At World-Renowned Aspen Forest, Paul C. Rogers

Aspen Bibliography

Upland aspen (Populus spp.) forests contribute significantly to biodiversity in their circumboreal role as keystone species. As aspen ecosystems flourish or diminish, myriad dependent species follow suit. The 43-hectare Pando aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clone in Utah, USA, is thought to be the largest living organism on earth, but is faltering due to chronic herbivory. Long-term resilience in aspen communities, including Pando, rests on successful recruitment of vegetative suckers that are nutritiously desirable to browsing ungulates. Here, I evaluate aspen reproduction alongside numerous vital indicators of Pando's status in the first trend assessment of this embattled iconic forest. …

Seeing The Forest For The Trees: Managing Social Conflict And Forest Restoration, Steven E. Daniels, Jens Emborg, Greg B. Walker Jan 2011

Seeing The Forest For The Trees: Managing Social Conflict And Forest Restoration, Steven E. Daniels, Jens Emborg, Greg B. Walker

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper examines the role that social conflict is likely to play in forest restoration projects. A definition of conflict as “perceived goal interference among interdependent parties” serves as a point of departure for the discussion, and the nature of forest restoration conflict is systematically examined by focusing on each aspect of the definition: perceptions, goal interference, the parties, and their interdependence. Agencies undertaking restoration projects are encouraged to adopt a discourse orientation, wherein they recognize that 1) their public involvement efforts are creating a discourse that can incorporate a wide array of values and voices and 2) groups may …

Preliminary Analysis Of The Management Situation Summary, Wasatch-Cache National Forest, April 1999, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Forestry

The National Forest Management Act (NFMA) of 1976 (NFMA P.L. 94-588) required each National Forest to develop National Forest Land and Resource Management Plans (Forest Plans), and to update or "revise" them when conditions have significantly changed or at least every 15 years. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest completed its current Forest Plan in 1985 (USDA Forest Service 1985). To comply with NFMA a revision needs to be completed by the end of 2000. In 1997, Congress prohibited expenditure of funds on formal Forest Plan revision. In 1998 prohibitions were lifted for 14 national forests nationwide. The Wasatch-Cache National Forest was …

Forage Quality In Burned And Unburned Aspen Communities, N.V. Debyle, P.J. Urness, D.L. Blank

Aspen Bibliography

We assessed the effects of fire on the quality of herbaceous and browse forage for elk (Gervus e/aphus) and domestic sheep in the aspen (Populus tremu/oides) forest type. Selected forage species were sampled on burned and adjacent unburned areas during the summers of the first and second years after autumn prescribed burning of three sites in southeastern Idaho. These samples were analyzed for in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), crude protein, calcium, and phosphorus. This aspen type has a highly nutritious understory irrespective of burning. We found additional improvement in forage quality as a result of prescribed burning. In the …

Response Of Breeding Birds To Commercial Clearcutting Of Aspen In Southwestern Colorado [Usa], V.E. Scott, G.L. Crouch

Aspen Bibliography

Breeding birds on an aspen forest in southwestern Colorado increased in species diversity after 25% of the timber sale area forest was clearcut in patches of 3 to 20 acres. Bird population density on the forest with clearcuts was not significantly different from that on an uncut forest. Of the 20 species evaluated, six were more and one was less abundant than on the uncut forest.

Uneven-Aged Forest Management: State Of The Art (Or Science?) Jan 1979

Uneven-Aged Forest Management: State Of The Art (Or Science?)

Forestry

Examines some important historical factors that have caused widespread preference of the even-aged management system over the uneven-aged. Major decisions facing forest managers interested in applying uneven-aged management are defined, and a review is made of techniques traditionally used, or recently proposed, for use in making these decisions. Finally, problem areas needing further research and development are identified.

A Survey Of Soil Invertebrates In Two Aspen Forests In Northern Minnesota, T.L. Wagner, W.J. Mattson, J.A. Witter

Aspen Bibliography

Productivity of ecosystems depends to a large extent on the quantity of available nutrients. In natural ecosystems, much of the nutrient stock is unavailable because it is bound in live and dead organic matter. Additions to the pool of available nutrients come from several sources, but the largest and most important one is dead organic matter. Therefore, the productivity of ecosystems is often said to be related to the rate of nutrient release from, or the mineralization of, organic litter (Ghilarov 1971, Satchell 1974).

Preliminary Fresh And Dry Weight Tables For Seven Tree Species In Maine, Harold E. Young, Lars Strand, Russell Altenberger Nov 1964

Preliminary Fresh And Dry Weight Tables For Seven Tree Species In Maine, Harold E. Young, Lars Strand, Russell Altenberger

Aspen Bibliography

Long range forecasts of the use of wood, independently prepared by the Forestry and Forest Products Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome and the Standard Research Institute in California, concluded that in the foreseeable future there will be only a slight increase in the consumption of lumber but a rapidly increasing use of products made from wood fiber such as paper and paperboard.

Since 1955 the use of weight as a basic unit of measurement for roundwood and chips has increased more rapidly than the consumption of products made from such material. In some portions of the …

Ecological Aspects Of Air Pollution From An Iron Sintering Plant At Wawa, Ontario, A.G. Gordon, E. Gorham Jan 1963

Ecological Aspects Of Air Pollution From An Iron Sintering Plant At Wawa, Ontario, A.G. Gordon, E. Gorham

Aspen Bibliography

At Wawa, in northern Ontario, vegetation has been damaged severely by sulphur dioxide pollution from an iron-sintering plant. Damage is mainly restricted to a narrow strip northeast from the sinter plant, since southwest winds are strongly predominant. It is traceable from the air for at least 20 mile in this direction and is estimated as severe within 11 miles and very severe within 5 miles. Within about 10 miles NE, from the sinter plant ground flora variety declines markedly, from about 20-40 species per 40 square meter quadrat beyond this distance to 0-1 species within 2 miles of the pollution …
