A Novel Body Coloration Phenotype In Anolis Sagrei: Implications For Physiology, Fitness, And Predation, Yasmeen Erritouni, Beth Reinke, Ryan Calsbeek

Beth Reinke

In animals, color signals that convey information about quality are often associated with costs linked to the expression of coloration and may therefore be honest signals of sender quality. Honest indicators are often seen in sexual signals that are used by males to advertise quality to females. Carotenoid and pterin pigments are responsible for yellow, orange, and red coloration in a variety of taxa, but can also serve important roles as antioxidants by reducing free radicals in the body. In this study, we test the effects of a novel full-bodied orange color phenotype of the brown anole, Anolis sagrei, on …

Alternatives To Laboratory Animals: Definition And Discussion, Andrew N. Rowan Dec 2018

Alternatives To Laboratory Animals: Definition And Discussion, Andrew N. Rowan

Andrew N. Rowan, DPhil

The origins of the concept of "alternatives" to the use of animals in research may be traced back to the 1800's and the furore about using live animals in surgical and other experiments. Some of the animal protection societies in England were prepared to accept animal experimentation provided it was performed under anesthesia. Even Dr. Marshall Hall, who championed the spread of experimental medicine in 19th century England, considered it necessary to control and prevent unwarranted, inept and cruel experimentation (French, 1975). The concept of alternatives has developed in the 20th century to encompass not only the reduction (prevention) of …

Ethical Foundations For The Lethal Management Of Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalocrocorax Auritus) In The Eastern United States: An Argument Analysis, Chelsea Batavia, Michael Paul Nelson Dec 2018

Ethical Foundations For The Lethal Management Of Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalocrocorax Auritus) In The Eastern United States: An Argument Analysis, Chelsea Batavia, Michael Paul Nelson

Chelsea Batavia, PhD

Lethal management of Double-crested Cormorants (Phalocrocorax auritus) has been implemented in many areas of the United States. In this paper, the philosophical method of argument analysis is used to assess ethical premises underlying the proposition that Double-crested Cormorant populations should be culled to reduce pressures on wild fisheries in the Great Lakes region of the eastern USA. This influential argument has been used to justify the destruction of more than half a million Double-crested Cormorants and hundreds of thousands of their nests and eggs. Three versions of the argument are formulated and assessed. It is shown that each of the …

Predicting Combined Effects Of Land Use And Climate Change On River And Stream Salinity, John Olson Dec 2018

Predicting Combined Effects Of Land Use And Climate Change On River And Stream Salinity, John Olson

John Olson

Agricultural, industrial and urban development have all contributed to increased salinity in streams and rivers, but the likely effects of future development and climate change are unknown. I developed two empirical models
to estimate how these combined effects might affect salinity by the end of this century (measured as electrical conductivity, EC). The first model predicts natural background from static (e.g. geology and soils) and dynamic
(i.e. climate and vegetation) environmental factors and explained 78% of the variation in EC. I then compared the estimated background EC with current measurements at 2001 sites chosen probabilistically from all conterminous USA streams. …

Since signing the peace accords in 1996, the Guatemalan government committed to increase the tax burden of 1995 by 50% to a total of 13%. This target has only been reached 4 times in more than two decades. There have been multiple attempts at tax reforms that have failed or been incomplete. Guatemala exhibits much income inequality and is one of the poorest countries in the region.
Given this background, the problem to be considered in this analysis is that there is little information regarding how different tax reforms would affect the accessibility to food in Guatemala. With information …

Generating High-Order Optical And Spin Harmonics From Ferromagnetic Monolayers, G.P. Zhang, M.S. Si, M. Murakami, Y.H. Bai, Thomas F. George Nov 2018

Generating High-Order Optical And Spin Harmonics From Ferromagnetic Monolayers, G.P. Zhang, M.S. Si, M. Murakami, Y.H. Bai, Thomas F. George

Thomas George

High-order harmonic generation (HHG) in solids has entered a new phase of intensive research, with envisioned band-structure mapping on an ultrashort time scale. This partly benefits from a flurry of new HHG materials discovered, but so far has missed an important group. HHG in magnetic materials should have profound impact on future magnetic storage technology advances. Here we introduce and demonstrate HHG in ferromagnetic monolayers. We find that HHG carries spin information and sensitively depends on the relativistic spin–orbit coupling; and if they are dispersed into the crystal momentum k space, harmonics originating from real transitions can be k-resolved and …

Development And Characterization Of Nano Nickel-Based Conductive Inks For Flexographic Printing Of Electronics And New Interpretations Of Surface Energies Of Solids, Bilge N. Altay

Bilge Nazli Altay

Traditional printing technologies and conductive/functional inks have been integrated to print electronic devices and circuits on really think, lightweight and flexible materials in a time and cost-effective manner. Printing is an additive manufacturing technology, which selectively deposits materials only where needed to produce a wide range of devices including sensors, smart packaging, solar panels, batteries, light sources and wearable electronics. Therefore, it greatly reduces the number of required steps for manufacturing as well as the amount of waste generated relative to conventional electronic manufacturing. However, the process requirements and ink formulations to print electronics differ from graphic printing; therefore, the …

Ponds For Peace: A Collaborative Aquaculture Project In Liberia, Joseph Buttner Nov 2018

Ponds For Peace: A Collaborative Aquaculture Project In Liberia, Joseph Buttner

Joseph Buttner

Since 2012, Salem State University (SSU) and the United Methodist University of Liberia (UMU) have pursued aquaculture as part of a larger, broader collaboration to help nurture a sustainable peace in Liberia. The ongoing initiative recognizes that requisites to a sustainable peace include access to education, health care, jobs and food, particularly in rural (upcountry) Liberia. Liberians have a tradition of fishing, eating fish and aquaculture, providing a receptive audience and opportunity to expand production and impact (Fig. 1). Aquaculture training can be pursued without having to create interest or a market. The UMU network of campuses and the United …

Highest And Best Use Determinations In Agricultural Land Assessments, Matthew Elliott, Lisa Elliott, Tong Wang Nov 2018

Highest And Best Use Determinations In Agricultural Land Assessments, Matthew Elliott, Lisa Elliott, Tong Wang

Matthew Elliott

Determining highest and best of use (HBU) is necessary for supportable Ag land assessments. In this study,
we determine HBU and most probable use (MPU) of South Dakota Ag land as either cropland or grassland.
To determine HBU, we simulate net returns for cropland and grassland for every possible combination of
the productivity and legal dimensions using the APEX model and copula approach. To determine MPU,
we use random forest classification given net returns, risk, topography, and soil productivity ratings. We
discuss the impacts of using MPU, HBU, and soil ratings for determining use for Ag land property
assessments.

Freshwater Aquaculture And Its Permitting In Rhode Island: Two Case Studies, Michael A. Rice, Joseph B. Haberek, David Beutel

Michael A Rice

In Rhode Island permits to conduct aquaculture, including freshwater aquaculture, are issued by the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) as the designated lead agency by state law. However, by Rhode Island law, aquaculture is considered a form of agriculture. It is the responsibility and duty of the state aquaculture coordinator in CRMC to receive aquaculture applications and coordinate the review of these applications through the multiple federal, state and local agencies that hold regulatory jurisdiction. Since most freshwater aquaculture is conducted on private lands rather than in public trust waters of the state, there is no leasing review. If the …

Bilge Nazli Altay

In recent years, traditional printing methods have been integrated to print flexible electronic devices and circuits. Since process requirements for electronics diff er from those for graphic printing, the fundamentals require rediscovery mainly to optimize manufacturing techniques and to find cost reduction methods without compromising functional performance. In addition, alternative inks need to be formulated to increase the variety of functional inks and to pioneer new product developments. In this report, we investigate a thermoplastic-based nickel ink prototype to print electrodes using a screen-printing process. Process fundamentals are explored, and cost reduction methods are addressed by studying …

Evolution Of Bidirectional Costly Mutualism From Byproduct Consumption, Lon Chubiz, William R. Harcombe, Jeremy M. Chacón, Elizabeth M. Adamowicz, Christopher J. Marx Nov 2018

Evolution Of Bidirectional Costly Mutualism From Byproduct Consumption, Lon Chubiz, William R. Harcombe, Jeremy M. Chacón, Elizabeth M. Adamowicz, Christopher J. Marx

Lon Chubiz

Mutualisms are essential for life, yet it is unclear how they arise. A two-stage process has been proposed for the evolution of mutualisms that involve exchanges of two costly resources. First, costly provisioning by one species may be selected for if that species gains a benefit from costless byproducts generated by a second species, and cooperators get disproportionate access to byproducts. Selection could then drive the second species to provide costly resources in return. Previously, a synthetic consortium evolved the first stage of this scenario: Salmonella enterica evolved costly production of methionine in exchange for costless carbon byproducts generated by …

Are Different Actions Mediated By Distinct Systems Of Knowledge In Infancy?, Peter Vishton Oct 2018

Are Different Actions Mediated By Distinct Systems Of Knowledge In Infancy?, Peter Vishton

Peter Vishton

This chapter considers why studies of infant looking and reaching often suggest different patterns of cognitive and perceptual development. In some cases, convergent results have emerged from studies of infant looking and reaching, but differences are common. The most typical results suggest less adult-like perception and cognition in studies of reaching than in studies of looking. Several reaching studies, however, do not fit this pattern, suggesting that reaching actions may be mediated by distinct systems of knowledge and information processing. Comparisons of research on other behaviors, such as crawling and walking, also suggest that infant knowledge systems vary across actions. …
