Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to investigate the possibilities of developing terminal male and female lines for lamb production by the crossing of native breeds, that is, Akkaraman, Sakız (Chios) and Kıvırcık breeds. The Akkaraman sheep is a fattailed breed raised in central Anatolia, while Sakız and Kıvırcık sheep aren non fattailed breeds raised in western and northern-western Anatolia. The Birth rate of Akkaraman x Akkaraman (AA), Sakız x Akkaraman (SA) and Kıvırcık x Akkaraman (KA) breeding groups were generally found as follows: 94.0, 78.6 and 74.0% in 1996; and 93.3, 90.8 and 85.0% in 1997, respectively. The survival rate of …

Determination Of Seropositivity For Toxoplasma Gondiiinfection In Pregnant And Aborted Sheep In Elazig And Vicinity By Sabin-Feldman (Sf) Test, Müni̇r Aktaş, Nazi̇r Dumanli, Cahi̇t Babür, K. Zafer Karaer, Hasan Öngör

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted in pregnant and aborted sheep to determine Toxoplasma gondiiantibodies. Blood samples were collected from a total of 154 sheep from 22 different herds during the period December 1996-January 1997 in Elazig and vicinity. Of these 154 sheep, 56 were pregnant, 57 aborted in the previous year and the remaining 41 sheep aborted within the period of the study. Sera obtained properly from these blood samples were examined by Sabine-Feldman (SF) test. Seropositivity for Toxoplasma gondiiinfection was determined in 72 (46.8%) of the 154 sheep at the titers ranging from 1/16 to 1/1024. The seropositivity rates of …

Enterotoxaemia Incidence In Small Ruminants In Elazığ And The Surrounding Provinces In 1994-1998, Canan Özcan, Meti̇n Gürçay Jan 2000

Enterotoxaemia Incidence In Small Ruminants In Elazığ And The Surrounding Provinces In 1994-1998, Canan Özcan, Meti̇n Gürçay

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

132 intestine specimens belonging to small ruminants with suspected enterotoxaemia were sent to the Elazig Veterinary Control and Research Institute from Elazığ and the surrounding provinces in 1994-1998. In bacteriological examinations, it was found that 51 of the 132 specimens were positive and 81 negative. The toxin-neutralisation test was applied for diagnosis. The 51 enterotoxaemia cases were identified as 28 C.welchii Type D, 16 C.welchii Type C, 7 C.welchii Type A.

Comparative Studies On The Production Performances Of Chios And Imroz Breeds Kept Under Semi-Intensive Conditionus Ii. Milk Production, Fleece Yields And Characteristics, Şebnem Gündal Çörekçi̇, Mehmet Evri̇m

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This paper is the second part of a study carried out to reveal the comparative production performances and effect of some environmental factors on the production characteristics of Chios and Imroz ewes kept in a single flock under semi-intensive conditions. In this part of the study milk yields, lactation lengths and fleece weights and characteristics were considered. Mean lactation lengths and milk yield of Chios ewes were 203 days and 73.92 kg respectively; the comparative values for Imroz ewes were 223 days and 102.04 kg respectively. At the first shearing (6 months of age), average fleece weights of Chios and …

Comparative Studies On The Production Performances Of Chios And Imroz Sheep Kept Under Semi-Intensive Condition Iii. The Effects Of Some Environmental Factors On Production Characteristics, Şebnem Gündal Çörekçi̇, Mehmet Evri̇m

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This paper reports the third part of a study carried out to reveal the comparative production performances and effects of some environmental factors on the production characteristics of Chios and Imroz ewes kept in a single flock under semi-intensive conditions. In this report, the effects of some environmental factors on production characteristics are considered. The effects of genotype, sex (except in the case of fleece qualities) type of parturition, the age of the mother and years of birth on the fleece yields and body weights of lambs at different periods and first-shearing (6 months of age) fleece yields were investigated. …

The Effects Of Plasma Vitamin C And Ceruloplasmin Levels And Exogen Vitamin C Supplementation On Reproduction In Sheep, Seyfullah Hali̇loğlu, Behi̇ç Serpek Jan 2000

The Effects Of Plasma Vitamin C And Ceruloplasmin Levels And Exogen Vitamin C Supplementation On Reproduction In Sheep, Seyfullah Hali̇loğlu, Behi̇ç Serpek

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of vitamin C on progesterone and oestradiol 17b synthesis, and fertility rate were studied in Merino sheep. A total of 60 sheep, aged between 2 and 7 years, of which 30 had low, and the other 30 had high plasma vitamin C levels were used. Each low and high vitamin C group was divided into 2 subgroups. Each subgroup had equal numbers of sheep. Subgroups 2 and 4 served as controls in the low and high vitamin C groups, respectively. 500 mg of vitamin C was injected intramuscularly into the subgroups 1 and 3 in the low and …

The Influence Of The Dictyocaulus Filaria On The Phospholipid And Fatty Acid Composition In The Blood Of Sheep, G. M. Bastarbekova, A. E. Kuchbaev, D. A. Azimov Jan 2000

The Influence Of The Dictyocaulus Filaria On The Phospholipid And Fatty Acid Composition In The Blood Of Sheep, G. M. Bastarbekova, A. E. Kuchbaev, D. A. Azimov

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This paper provides results of an analysis of phospholipids (PL) and their fatty acid (FA) content in the blood of sheep infected by the nematode Dictyocaulus filaria. Significantly high level of arachidonic acid in the lysophospholipids, and low levels of docozangexenic acid in the phospholipids were obtained, which indicate structural and functional disorders of cellular membranes in blood during dictyocaulosis. These disorders are regarded as metabolic criteria for an assessment of the relation between parasite and host.
